Strike Back below!

UN PROPHETE is riding high off a massive tidal wave of buzz following its appearance at Cannes, where many thought it was in fact that best film of the event, and it's already French's entry into the 2010 Oscar race. It’s directed by Jacques Audiard and the official synopsis is as follows:

Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena cannot read not write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang who rules the prison, he is given a number of missions to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang leaders confidence in the process. But Malik is brave and a fast learner, daring to secretly develop his own plans.

There’s nothing particularly mind-blowing about the trailer, but due to the deafening hype I’m certainly interested in seeing it pronto. The film has been picked up by Sony, and I'm told will be opening in limited release on February 26th, 2010.

I loved Tell No One from last year. Also, some new wave stuff like Le Samourai, A Woman is a Woman, and Donkeyskin.

This looks great, can't wait!

I've seen a lot of French movies, and a lot of them are excellent (I especially like some of their comedies). But nothing comes close to the best French movie, Le Dīner des Cons.

If French-Canadian counts, then it's "Les invasions barbares" for me.

Hi guys

Being French I got a chance to see the film back in August. It's mesmerizing. It's one of my favorites of the year with Up and Inglourious Basterds. Paul Tassi, I can send you a copy of the DVD when it's released early January if you want :)

Audiard is a great writer. His films are subtle and there is nothing mind-blowing about his directing skills. He simply cares about his characters and there is always something twisted about the story he tells. Im looking forward to this.
