Unbreakable 2 is happening! But it's not Unbreakable 2...

Sep. 3, 2010by: Mike Sampson

M. Night Shyamalan has been teasing us with thoughts of a sequel to UNBREAKABLE since the film was released. As he just told MTV, "Literally, that's the question I get asked the most anywhere around the world." OK fans, your wait is over. UNBREAKABLE 2 is finally coming. But not really.

So when is an UNBREAKABLE 2 not an UNBREAKABLE 2? (Is this kinda like how a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 is not a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4?) As it turns out, Shyamalan realizes that an actual UNBREAKABLE 2 is never going to happen but he really liked the ideas he had fleshed out for the sequel so he's adapting those ideas into a standalone film. Well c'mon Shyamalan just say it! "I'll just say it: the third 'Night Chronicles' movie is what would have been the sequel."

Night says he had "such a cool idea for a villain" he set it aside for the UNBREAKABLE sequel and began writing ideas around it. But as UNBREAKABLE 2 became less likely, he decided to cannibalize that idea for his upcoming "Night Chronicles" series, which is currently set up at Universal. (The first of those films, DEVIL, hits theaters on September 17.

The question is whether the "Night Chronicles" will still be around to make a third film. With the Shyamalan name producing diminishing returns as of late, if DEVIL and its follow-up fail to gain any kind of traction, it's possible that the "Night Chronicles" might not be chronicled after that. I haven't seen DEVIL nor have I talked to anyone who has so I can't speak to it's quality. But the success of that movie will go a long way towards finally seeing what Shyamalan had cooked up for UNBREAKABLE 2.

Extra Tidbit: Shyamalan says he considers UNBREAKABLE and THE VILLAGE his best films. Did he even see THE VILLAGE??

Not sure what's with The Village bashing. I thought The Village, The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable were all good.

I feel the same way, all four of those movies were solid. His first real misstep was Lady in the Water.

They can call it the unofficial sequel all they want, but it isn't Unbreakable 2 if it doesn't have Bruce and Sam Jackson in it.

Why All The Hate?

A) "The Village" is great and vastly underrated. People were expecting a horror film, and got a romantic drama- blame the marketing, not the film.
B) As a producer, I think he'll be far more effective, to a mass audience, and am excited for "Devil".

I actually liked The Village a lot. I can see why it might not be for everyone, though. Anyway, Devil looks cool. I think it's a good idea for M. Knight supply general ideas for movies (the man IS creative), and let other people handle the details and directing. At least until he gets his head back on straight and can get back to his early success.

My favorite films from him are The Village and Signs. The Village is a prime example how a film can be bad based on mismarketing. The film will be accepted by new generations in the future who had not experienced the downright horrible promotion for the film and I can guarantee that. It's a wonderful film with Oscar-worthy performances that included one of the strongest female characters since Ripley from Alien.

I agree with Shriek10124

Loved those films and it wasn't until Lady In The Water (HORRIBLE!) did I start to doubt his abilities. I think DEVIL looks cool and the idea is definitely interesting now here's hoping it doesn't suck...

Hmmm, idk. I understand a lot of people want a sequel, but I would think a sequel would kill the magic of the first movie. I just don't understand how that would work. The first film was like the ultimate hero's origin story, and that is what made it so great. A sequel would be just another superhero film. I suppose that it could be a great take on the superhero film, but I think that Unbreakable doesn't need a sequel really. It's fine as a standalone film.

As to the debate of his bad films,

As to the debate of his bad films, I think that The Village gets a bad rap. It's not so much a bad film than it is a film that defied expectation. So it's not ACTUALLY a monster film. The core idea behind it is fantastic, and the way it plays out is thrilling and intriguing. I think that people just dis the film because they don't like the fact that it has yet another twist.

I really don't know how anybody could accuse a sequel of ruining the first movie. No matter how bad the sequel is, you will always have the original. Did Superman 3 and 4 suddenly make 1 and 2 suck by simply existing. No, just pretend they don't exist just like I do with the Matrix sequels and Alien 3. As far as I'm concerned, they didn't happen and I wait patiently for the day James Cameron decided to retcon Alien 3 and make a true sequel worthy of the first 2.

I don't know...I adore Unbreakable but I've never really said to myself, "Gosh, I'd love to see a sequel." In that sense, having an unofficial sequel as the third Chronicles installment sounds good to me. Also, The Village wasn't a disaster by a longshot. It's no Sixth Sense, but it wasn't so bad either. Hopefully Night Chronicles does well enough to garner a third outing. It'll be such a shame if it doesn't make it there.

Never....

saw any of his movies, except for The Sixth Sense, which I thought wasn't all that bad. I have been wanting to see Unbreakable for some time now. The Village & Signs are of no interest to me. Oh yeah, I saw that crapfest The Happening too.

I'm still just so pissed that he ruined the best scripted cartoon ever made. They should have just brought in Dave Filoni to do the live action Airbender since he did the first season of the animated show.

He ruined Shin Chan??? Or wait, was it The Simpsons??? Or no, it must have been Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Bebop....Ah hell, I don't know what the hell your talking about (Airbender is NOT the best scripted cartoon ever made, of course, neither are the ones I mentioned above, they're just better).

I really hate to say it but I hope these Night Chronicles movies turn out OK because I'd really like to see this sort of Unbreakable sequel. The first one was the only movie he's made that I really loved. Sixth Sense was good but Unbreakable was just plain awesome.

I'm a fan of Shyamalan and most of his movies, The Sixth Sense being my favorite. Unbreakable was a great movie and I would love to see a sequel and see M. Night redeem himself so he can get his shit together again and make better quality movies. I just don't understand this "stand alone" movie. Will it be diferent completely or will it still have Willis and Jackson in it? Cause if not, I don't really see this as a sequel. I guess he will just use the same concept but with different characters?

Shama Lama!

The Village was a great movie. The entire concept was fantastic, and once the 'secret' was revealed, I had to admit, I never saw it coming.

Keep those original stories coming Shama Lama.

We love 'em!!!

as long as he makes it and it stars Willis and Sam Jackson he can call it what he wants:

really? Unbreakable and the Village are your best films? I really like those films, but their no where as good as The Sixth Sense or Signs! Willis really did good with M. Night. He was in the best M. Night film (The Sixth Sense) and one of his better ones (Unbreakable)!

Not sure if this is a good idea or not. Does this mean M Night is directing it, or just producing like he did for Devil? Maybe the intended Last Airbender sequel will be the second part of the night chronilces? Oh well, I'll wait and see. I still think The Village is 3/4 of a great film.

i actually like m. night's films, some more than others, even lady in the water (although i didn't see last airbender). unbreakable is definetly my favorite though. i would love to see a sequal to this in any fashion as long as mr. willis and mr. glass are on board.

I can only say I'm on the fence about this decision. On the one hand, I've been anxious for a while to see any news on a potential sequel for Unbreakable. However, I hope he's just not cashing in on the name of the project to get his new franchise going. If he's able to get Willis back and introduce a new 'villain', then sure, I'd be up for it.

You want to know why everyone wants a sequel to Unbreakable? It's because that is the only movie of his that hasn't completely sucked furiously.

Terrible. Take a lap.

Jesus, kid. The Village was the first movie that made me mad. Actually angry. Stupid dialogue about things not being named, Adrien Brody's performance as an idiot, a lot of twists, and the main twist so blatant, I didn't bite. A redeeming aspect is the score by James Newton Howard.

the village sucked!

interesting premise.....but tell me this, how were the "monsters" in the village making all those crazy noises, and then you find out its a dude dressed up in a crappy suit?? Explain that to me, when they didn't use any type of technology in THE VILLAGE! Plus the stupid "twist" ending was fucking a punch in the face for something that could have a been a creepy monster flick. FUCK THE VILLAGE.

You can see the deleted scene for how they made those noise. MNS just cut it out because it was unnecessary. Do we really have to know every single thing the elders did? No, he made his point when they showed the costumes.

LOVE "The Village"!

I loved "The Village" and continue to believe people just don't get it. And like it or not, M. Night has name recognition regardless of what you think of his movies. And if the "Night Chronicles" fails he will still find a way to bring this to the big screen and I'll be there. I fully intend to see "Devil" and I remain a big fan of his. He's pretty underrated lately. "Unbreakable" is his best, followed by "Signs," and "The Village." If people want to see a great tale similar to "Unbreakable"
