Universal exec apologizes, admits Cowboys & Aliens, Wolfman sucked

Nov. 3, 2011by: Mike Sampson

It has not been an easy few years for Universal. While they've had some nice successes (DESPICABLE ME, BRIDESMAIDS and FAST FIVE among them), there have been way too many high-profile disappointments. From THE WOLFMAN to LAND OF THE LOST to COWBOYS & ALIENS to YOUR HIGHNESS, Universal has sunk a lot of money into movies that just didn't perform. When asked about his studio's performance, President of Universal Studios, Ron Meyer explained it succinctly. "We make a lot of shitty movies."

Meyer spoke at the Savannah Film Festival in a brutally honest speech, opening up about Universal's recent and frequent disappointments.

COWBOYS & ALIENS? "Wasnt good enough. Forget all the smart people involved in it, it wasnt good enough. All those little creatures bouncing around were crappy. I think it was a mediocre movie."

LAND OF THE LOST? "Just crap. I mean, there was no excuse for it."

THE WOLFMAN?? "One of the worst movies we ever made...WOLFMAN and BABE 2 are two of the shittiest movies we put out. The script never got right...the director was wrong. Benicio [del Toro] stunk. It all stunk."

Tell us how you really feel, Ron... But seriously, this is exactly what needed to be said. Some people probably won't like hearing it (perhaps Joe Johnston and Jon Favreau) but we, as audience members and movie fans, need to hear an admission of guilt. I may not have my $10 back, but I feel better knowing that they have failed. If they can admit to us some of their movies are crap, maybe that's enough for them, behind office doors, to admit to themselves what they're doing is crap and make some changes.

Meyer admitted they had done some things right with projects like UNITED 93 and SCOTT PILGRIM, two movies he was proud of. He didn't mention, however, BATTLESHIP, a movie due next summer that already has the air of another expensive disappointment.

I'm really getting sick and tired of studio execs or creators/artists in Hollywood apologizing for their movies. Stand behind your fucking art or don't set out to make that movie at all. Maybe if you took the time with a script and a story instead of rushing it out there for it's release date with only money as your priority than you wouldn't have had to sit up here and cry about how the movie turned out.

I see your point, and while I don't agree with the statements he made, (except for Land of the Lost), movies take so much time and effort that , at any point, the creative efforts can deflate and the ball's dropped. There was a much more diplomatic way he should have gone about this, considering how much time people worked and invested, but I don't mind a little honesty in saying yeah, this or that didn't work out as planned.

He wouldnt be saying these movies were crap if they were a huge hit; way to throw your directors and actors and whoever under the bus.

Maybe if he'd let the directors do their job instead of IMPOSING them his "visions", those movies would have been better! And... BABE 2? Really? It's a classic!
He's SO disrespectful of the people ACTUALLY WORKING on those films...
AND IF THE MOVIES YOU GREEN LIGHTED ARE SO BAD... RESIGN YOU MORON !

Babe 2 is pretty underrated

Funny how he's assassinating films that failed at the box office, and not shit that made money regardless of how bad it was.
Wolfman and Babe 2 aren't all they could've been, but they're a damn sight better than I expect from American Reunion or Battleship.
In any case, what's with this sudden craze of filmmakers and studio heads admitting their films sucked after they've made their money? They're not sorry, it doesn't make their next efforts any better, it only compounds the guilt. If they

Faulk these apologies

They apologize, yet continue to set the bar low, finance, and approve of these films and think everything will be okay when they admit their mistakes. They want to have their cake and eat it too. Well FAULK 'EM!

This guy's just throwing his employees

under the bus. This "crap" happened on your watch, Ron Meyer, so it's your fault. And to say Oscar-winning actor Benicio del Toro "stunk"? Methinks the problem wasn't with Benicio.

Everyone he's dissing has made solid movies in the past so he should look elsewhere when explaining why Universal's been putting out such mediocre product. Himself, perhaps?

Buddy had a problem with these films, yet goes along with BATTLESHIP? I don't buy it. Expect another "apology" when another cash-grab gets ripped a new one.

The guy speaks his mind now on what was crap, but when more crap is forced on the public will he still be honest. As movie watchers, we have that space to say "Yeah that movie sucked" This guy doing it seems like he is throwing people under the bus. You produce the crap and you always will, so stand by your crap.

Wolfman was fun

I got into it with a friend recently over The Wolfman, which I just re-watched during my horror movie marathon leading up to Halloween. The Wolfman is a fine popcorn flick, and even though Hopkins hams it up, I think it's a respectable, fun movie.

Sounds like this guy is just saying what people want to hear to get them on their good side or something.

Agree about Cowboys & Aliens though.

I thought Wolfman and Cowboys & Aliens were fun. They both most certainly could have been better though. Especially Wolfman if it hadn't gone through all that BS right before filming. At least it's nice to hear him give an honest opinion; though I wonder if he'd have a different one if those movies made tons of money.

he can say it sucks sure

but that's just his opinion and his opinion is no more right or wrong than the next guys'. However to the people saying that he's just a 'typical hollywood exec pointing the finger' he's also pointing the finger at himself and his company for making a movie he didn't like. I mean he's obviously ragging on himself by ragging on his company/his movies.

I had an absolute blast with Cowboys & Aliens and will be checking it out again on blu-ray.

Land of the Lost sucked when I first saw it,

Land of the Lost sucked when I first saw it, but after repeat viewings it actually got more and more fun.

The Wolfman... alright that one still disappoints me after 3 viewings.

Bring on the thumbs downs.

Wow, I can't believe he brought up Babe A Pig in the City. I understand it was a financial bomb, but it was really an amazingly, although really dark, follow up to Babe. Don't knock it til you see it. And Cowboys wasn't that bad. If those two made bank, he'd be whistling a different tune. Land of the Lost, though was certainly shit. Good to see my college's film fest make the headlines!

in my opinion this is just one guy saying the movies sucked because they didn't make money. Making tons of money is not, and never has been a measure of quality. There are tons of small films that never see the light of day that are great!

Is there a reason why this is a trend all of a sudden? Does it make these execs look like they care? In either event, certain movies are going to suck or not be to everyone's taste no matter who is involved. I'm not sure the context in which he gave the speech, but more curious to hear what the audience reaction was than ours.

It doesn't actually sound like he's apologizing. He seems perfectly comfortable with the fact that those movies sucked. He never said "sorry". He'll produce a few more bad movies and 3 years from now say "Yea, I told ya, we make bad movies. If you don't like it see movies from other studios."

And we will, JoBloarians. We will.

I'm pretty sure a lot of you shared these exact same sentiments...

...so it's nice to hear someone this "high up" admit that they've done some shitty work and need to get themselves on the right track. Of course the guy didn't have anything to do with the production of the films, just the financing, and considering that we can sit around every day and call movies "crap", I don't see any reason why Meyer can't do the same.

Sure

Land of the Lost was utter garbage. I agree that the director and actor were all wrong for Wolfman, but I still enjoyed (most of) it. And I think he's being too hard on Cowboys & Aliens. It underperformed, but it was still pretty damn good. Definitely Favreau's weakest film, though.

I don't mind this guy saying those movies sucked. Seriously, why is it so bad for a company to admit their product sucks? We need more of that. Maybe then they'll stop bankrolling every big blockbuster remake piece of shit that comes out every year.

Sure, he wasn't directly involved with those movies, but he is part of the approval process of which movies get money and get developed.

And those weren't low budget, below the radar films, those were marketed as blockbusters. Those are the

And those weren't low budget, below the radar films, those were marketed as blockbusters. Those are the ones the studios are trying to make bank on. Those are the ones the studio heads are concerned about, and those are the flicks with one too many cooks in the kitchen.

I'm glad this guy's being an asshole and saying those movies are shit.

I didn't see Land of the Lost or Wolfman, but I saw C & A. To each their own, but I agree with him, Cowboys and Aliens was crap.

I'm with him on Cowboys & Aliens. That movie was bad from start to finish, with few great moments to offset the bad. Plot holes were only half the problem and I couldn't get past how dull the whole thing was. I know there are supporters, but this movie just wasn't for me. I wanted it to be, but it wasn't. The studio should be sorry for their part. And that's ok, they can't all be winners. I also don't want the creatives defending every movie they make, because some are really that bad. Owning

Owning it is a good thing, when it is their fault (when that is the case).

i call bullshit...Cowboys & Aliens was a solid flick just marketed wrong, relied too much on start power with Indy & Bond in it.

I respect Universal cuz they take chances like they did with Evan Almighty (sorry bad comparison), at least its not FOX, but they are hit or miss & i don't see nothing wrong here really.
