Universal has an Untitled Werewolf Thriller for next Halloween

10.31.2011

Universal Studios is sitting on a goldmine of classic movie monsters. We know this, they know this, so they're planning on cranking out some more monster movies, including dvd originals. Case in point, their upcoming untitled werewolf thriller, currently titled... UNTITLED WEREWOLF THRILLER. While they decided not to do a sequel to THE WOLFMAN this is the best we're going to get!

It's just started production in Romania via Universal 1440 Entertainment. The film revolves around a werewolf terrorizing a 19th century European village. It stars Stephen Rea (V FOR VENDETTA), Steven Bauer, Ed Quinn, Nia Peeples, Guy Wilson, Adam Croasdell and Rachel DiPillo, and was directed by Louis Morneau (JOY RIDE II, HITCHER II: I'VE BEEN WAITING).

The official synopsis- During his studies with the local doctor (Rea), Daniel (Wilson) witnesses the horrific consequences of werewolf attacks. Watching as the beast’s fearsome reputation draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans to the tiny town, Daniel dreams of destroying the ruthless predator. So when a mysterious stranger (Quinn) and his team of skilled werewolf hunters (Bauer, Croasdell) arrive to pursue the monster, he offers to join them, despite his mother’s (Peeples) protests. But it soon becomes clear that this creature is stronger, smarter and more dangerous than anything they have faced before. As casualties mount and villagers see their neighbors transformed into ravening monsters, the townsfolk take up arms against each other to find the true identity of the werewolf. Amid the hysteria, Daniel begins to suspect he’s closer to his target than he ever dreamed.

Did they just give away the twist? Stephen Rea as a werewolf would be more than enough reason to see the film, though.

“Universal introduced the movie-going public to the ‘creature feature’ more than a half century ago,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Today, audiences are once again enthralled by supernatural creatures in books, on television and in movies. Audiences young and old will enjoy this completely new take on a timeless story that is an essential part of Universal’s legacy.”

Expect it to hit Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On Demand for Halloween 2012.

Well, props for planning this movie for next Halloween. But, all due respect, if I want to see Stephen Rea as a werewolf I might just watch "A Company of Wolves" instead.

twist

When I read the end of the synopsis, I was like "What?! Did they just give away the twist?" and then sure enough, Alex's next line is that exact same question.
It's too bad they're not just doing a Wolfman re-reboot. Anyone can do a generic werewolf movie, but only Universal can do Wolfman. That's theirs. And unlike Werewolves, the Wolfman is pretty much unkillable. I mean, he survived countless movies and in the end needed Dr. Frankenstein's help to finally die.
Normal werewolves just

Normal werewolves just need some silver.

It is entirely possible this will be an excellent movie. There is a better possibility it will be like Bloodrayne.

I'm all for more (original) werewolf pictures, but I'm wondering if this is the best way to come about it. Either way, I'll be there to give it fair judgment upon its release.

I'm curious to know how many people here actually watch direct-to-video movies, or just ignore them completely like me. I'll check out something with good word of mouth (normally foreign or independent films that didn't open wide in the US), but they're generally the exception to the rule.
