Universal is into Dirty Grandpas

03.04.2011

Anyone up for a film about a dirty grandpa? Well, it's coming.

Universal is has picked up DIRTY GRANDPA, a comedy script from John Phillips with Barry Josephson producing. Phillips is a New York-based writer/performer from the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre. This is his first script.

A film about a dirty grandpa is pretty self explanatory, but there are other elements involved. The script is, "an R-rated comedy centered on a recently widowed, sexually aggressive grandfather on a road trip with his straight-laced grandson." Grandpa also intervenes when he realizes his grandson is going to marry a girl who is not right for him.

There are so many choices out there when it comes to finding a dirty grandpa. Alan Arkin? Gene Hackman? Maybe James Woods? Richard Jenkins? Just throwing some names out there.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you want to see as a dirty grandpa?

James Woods or J.K Simmons.

This sounds disgusting, but what else is there? James Woods would do this perfectly.

This is gonna either be a great movie or a complete pile of shit based on who they get. Nicholson's done this role a few times by now, even if he wasn't actually a grandpa in all of them. After "Solitary Man" Michael Douglas doesn't need this either. So right now I'm cautiously optimistic they'll find a good candidate.

Just want to take this opportunity to say Gene Hackman is one of THE best screen actors ever. The guy doesn't get the credit he deserves. Sure Nicholson, Walken, etc would be funny, but Hackman would take it to another level. However, I think he got so disillusioned with Hollywood that something called 'Dirty Grandpa' is unlikely to change his mind. Sadly.

Gene Hackman is not coming out of retirement for this crap to be sure. This sounds like a live-action feature of Grandpa Cotton Hill from King of the Hill.

it's not a remake, reboot, or adaptation of a milton bradley board game, and you're going to write it off based on a single sentence premise summary? And if Cotton Hill is as far as your imagination takes you, then I pity you for having such a small imagination.

I will agree that Hackman isn't coming out of retirement for this; he's still making that Lowe's money anyway.

Michael Douglas, Christopher Walken, or maybe Terry O'Quinn.

I'd love to see Kevin Bacon in the role but he's not old enough.

i doubt he'd do it, but oh how great wouldn't it be if Clint Eastwood got around doing a comedy for a change.

It would never happen,

but it would be fantastic to see Clint Eastwood do this. Just thinking of him perving around and being a smartass makes me grin.

Mel Gibson, but he may be a bit young. Christopher Lloyd would do nicely as well.

Charlie Sheen!

I know he's not that old, but he looks like it....and I can't get enough of his crazy antics!

Seriously, Billy Bob Thorton would be great, he just looks the part...

Easy

How funny would Christopher Walken be as the dirty grandpa. I mean Nicholson would be good, but he already kinda fits the part. I think Walken would be hilarious.

I think Billy Bob is old enough and has done it before, but I hope they let someone else take a whack at playing a crotchety old guy who curses and chases women. I like the Gene Hackman idea - where has he been, anyway? Or Michael Caine?
