Universal looking to make another Terminator sequel? Will Arnold return?

02.16.2011

Just a few weeks ago Arnold Scwarzenegger tweeted that he was officially accepting offers to star in movies again. Could Universal be prepping a new TERMINATOR movie with the hopes that Schwarzenegger may return to the once proud franchise?

TERMINATOR: SALVATION was supposed to be the film that relaunched the TERMINATOR franchise. Warner Bros. spent a good chunk of money to get a big name star in Christian Bale and an up-and-coming actor in Sam Worthington to bring audiences a new trilogy in the saga. The only thing they didn't see coming was that the movie mostly sucked and audiences didn't really care.

The rights to the TERMINATOR franchise were auctioned off last year and acquired by a group called Pacificor for almost $30 million. Sony Pictures had been interested in continuing the sequels but walked away after the property went bankrupt. Now Universal is circling the world of the Terminator who is looking to develop a big tentpole directing project for Justin Lin, who just wrapped FAST FIVE for the studio. The idea would be to pair Lin with writer Chris Morgan (WANTED, the upcoming 47 RONIN) for a new sequel.

But would Arnold return? Right now there's nothing but speculation as the project isn't enough of a reality to warrant an offer from Universal (at this point they're only circling acquiring the rights to make a TERMINATOR film) but it's very likely that if they do decide to make a TERMINATOR movie they'd at least explore the interest of the former governor.

All this said, do we need a new TERMINATOR movie? The last two movies were D.O.A. and it's very possible the ship has sailed on this franchise. What do you think? Would you be interested in another sequel or reboot?

I'm on board

Even more so based proportionally on how involved Arnold is. I would accept 2 movies to finish some sort of trilogy arc. Maybe shoot back to back and then leave the franchise with the comic and video game creators.

I liked the last one

I'd be for it...but
can we at least dispose of the term "reboot"? It's just a glib way of saying: "We screwed up on the last film and we want to bring in new cast members."

Terminator was great....T2 was superb. The next 2 were far from perfect, but i just like the mythos so much that i can tolerate them, lol. I think that the franchise deserves to breathe a little more. It would be quite easy to install Arnie into future films. This is a mythos built around time ravel and alteration of events. Rubberboy laid out a simple, yet effective foundation of how they could do it. I think there's a story or 2 yet to be told here...why not?

All the terminator movies had Arnold in anyway so him being in it doesnt guarantee the movie will be great, if you actually think about it though where else can the story actually go-we know virtually everything that will happen so I dont believe anyone know matter how good a writer they are can take the story anywhere new because its limited in its direction.

I would welcome a new movie only if Arnold returns, which probably won't happen. I happened to like Terminator 3, and Salvation wasn't bad it just didn't feel like a Terminator film without Arnie. I'm REALLY mad that they didn't continue Terminator The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Stupid tv stations!!

Spare us

When will the world learn that the Terminator franchise ended when Cameron finished it. Anything that came after was a feeble attemp at trying to make money. Stories sucked. Ideas were reused and shows were cancelled. If you dont get it by now, then you never will.

Neither T3 nor Terminator Salvation "sucked." There are other film franchises in much worse shape, circling the toilet bowl.

With that being said, I'd be down for another film. Especially if they can get Arnold in there some how.

Feel free to shoot me down in flames but some people here are talking about if they had Arnie back in the series how would they explain him being older. Make him the real guy they molded the original Terminator off and he could be a good guy that was captured then escapes and seeks revenge on the assholes that held him. Something like that anyway. Just a thought.Which ever way they go I hope its good. I'll shut up now.

I actually liked T3 more than Salvation, Stahl was a good Conner and it had Arnie. I would like to see another movie or 2, set about 10 years after Salvation. The only reason I accepted Salvation's mediocrity was because I knew it was starting a new trilogy and they were probably saving the good stuff for the later films (like discovering time travel).

Love the original Terminator and T2 was pretty darned good at the time especially effects wise...

But this last movie was poo poo... I really don't think we need anymore. If you wanna stick Arnie in something put him in the Conan remake...

This is weird

I was just watching T2 last night thinking how cool it'd be if Arny returned to the silver screen in a terminator movie, and even cooler if he were the villian!

Oh and jjrakman, you are sooo wrong! T2 is possibly one of the greatest american action movies ever made.

the rights were auctioned off last year for almost $30 million? Man, I would have given them 31 million, but I didn't now about he auction.

Actually

Salvation didn't suck. The problem is that the series has no more surprises. We know that John Conner will defeat the machines. That is the whole point of them sending robots back in time to kill his mother in the first place.

I have to disagree.

There's umpteen remakes of Dracula, and folks go to see each one even though there are no surprises.

T3 actually did suck. It wasn't the lack of surprises, it was that it was one of those movies that plods along where you wait for something to happen, and it never does. That doesn't necessarily mean 'splosions. But something, anything, would have been good.

There's a difference between honoring a property and making a mockery of it.

Although that crane sequence rocked, T3 took the mockery route with horrible dialogue so Salvation had to be perfect to revive it. I liked alot of things about Salvation like everyone else but McG was sloppy and it poured through everything.

T2 Sucked 2

The first one was the only good one.

I'm sorry, but T2 sucked too, with the exception of the depiction of the future wars.

It was essentially the same story as the first one: Here comes the robot from the future to kill us, run.

For some reason they just can't figure out how to make what most folks want to see, the future war as depicted in T1, and also in T2.

Give it a rest.

Salvation..

I thought Salvation wasn't all that bad. Granted it wasn't great, but it was far superior to that abomination of T3. Hell, I don't even remember what happened in that movie it was so bad.

They could do something along the lines with Arnolds character NOT being a Terminator, but maybe incorporate him into a role of the person that the Terminators were modeled after. Arnolds age could be applied to him being a survivor of the beginning of the war. With that premise, you could actually

Arnolds age could be applied to him being a survivor of the beginning of the war. With that premise, you could actually carry on the franchise and make a few sequels if need be. The only real flaw with that idea though would be the appearance of the "Arnold Terminator" that appeared briefly in Salvation. But again, make the older Arnold a survivor from an earlier part of the time line. I'm sure it could be done though

I'm glad to see people support Salvation. It seems every movie critic is eager to say it sucked, but the true fans know it was actually a worthy addition to the terminator franchise. I agree that if Anie comes back, he'll have to either play a human, or have a CGI body, but either way, I'd pay to see it.

Iīm game, but Arnold would have to play a human I think, the one that the Terminator is modeled on. Or just never take his clothes off. I hope to god that none of those guys gets anywhere near a Terminator movie, Wanted was god awful and Fast Five wasnīt that good. Being flashy isnīt enough, they have to understand emotion as well as action. McG proved as much.

For one thing I liked Salvation. For the love of god dont bring Arnold back! Hes too old and as Ive said before it makes absolutely no sense why skynet would make all their infiltrators look like him. The resistance Im pretty sure would start passing around a photo saying watch out for this guy. I say continue on what was built in Salvation and break the f-ing trend of remakes...oops I mean "reboot"

Canary

They should go back and time and kill of the guy who sang like a canary and blew the original TS ending of JC dying and having a terminator skeleton stuck inside his skin. If you have a hot piece of spoiler new on a film, keep it to yourself and let the rest of us enjoy the filmmakers story!

I thought that JC dying ending was a horrible idea, Im glad they changed it. You can see in the movie though the set up to the aborted ending. His face getting scanned in the t800 fight for instance.

dwayne johnson as a terminator, saw faster yesterday and must say he looked like he was a terminator already.
Love arnold but you cant explain why he looks older as a terminator.

Salvation was 3 minutes of interesting ideas wrapped up in one 110 minute piece of mediocrity. Why not come up with a new sci-fi franchise for Arnold?

i'm down for more Terminators

i've said this before, but they can keep making Terminator movies about the Robot War until eventually it ends with John Connor sending Kyle Reese back to the 80's so that the franchise does a complete 360 loop. that'd be awesome.

but justin lin is NOT the way to go. we dont need Terminator to turn into Fast and the Furious.

I liked it

Terminator Salvation was good. The critics can say what they want, but TS at least they tried it differently. No time travel. A newer plot. It had some flaws (don't they all?) But overall, it was a good effort .

I agree with you. It kept in line with the franchise and also went another way to keep surprises through out. It felt like the first in a trilogy to me and I want to see it continue.

I really liked Salvation, and if they found a good way to continue the story of the future war then I'm game. But if the story ends w/ Salvation I'd be ok w/ that too. I'd really hope that Bale is back on board for continuity in the John Connor role. Arnie is getting quite old so for him to look like a new T-800 fresh off the assembly line might be a hard sell. But I'm definitely up for Arnie's return to film in general!

as egotistical as he is, James Cameron was correct when he said, "The story ended with the second film."

He's right and I was interested to see how they would explain the Terminators coming back for Terminator 3, and the only explanation was, "You can't stop Judgment Day." Well they kind of did stop Judgment Day with the second film. The reason for Terminators coming back for T3 should have been the T-800 saying, "There's more money to be made at the cost of the integrity of the franchise."

Cowboys & Terminators

As long as they don't do another robot getting sent back in time to assassinate. I think they used that concept up by the third.

I liked Terminator: Salvation and would be down for more sequels with Arnold returning. This franchise needs a proper and fitting conclusion and with Arnold returning, then I think we might just get that.

It'd be cool to see him and Bale kicking robot ass.

I'm all up for the next one, hopefully to introduce Robert Patrick's scientist character creating the T1000 we all know and love. The main question is do we really need to revolve the film around Arnold to get it done? No. Just digitize his face like last time and move on. There are other actors to use (Why not Diesel and Duane??). C'mon Hollywood- Get R Done!!

Well a reboot is out of the question. Rebooting this series and hoping that Arnie would do it wouldn't work. It would be too confusing. Just continue the story and make up for the last one. I for one didn't mind Salvation. I personally was entertained but there are a lot of people out there that didn't so put Arnie in the film in some capacity continue the story line and make the fucking thing kick some serious cybernetic ass.
