Universal passes on religious film from Paul Thomas Anderson | Movie News

Religion can be an iffy topic, especially in the hands of Paul Thomas Anderson.
This isn't the reason that Universal has passed on THE MASTER, a religious film from Anderson. It's being said that the $35 million budget is the problem. Bill Pohlad of River Road is stepping in to help the project with financing. Pohlad also helped Terrence Malick on his hopefully upcoming film, THE TREE OF LIFE.
THE MASTER, which may not be the final title, is about a charismatic intellectual in the 1950s who becomes the leader of a start-up religion that takes off like wildfire. It's said to be a reflection upon Scientology and Mormonism.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was quickly cast by Anderson in the leading role as the leader of the religious organization. Yesterday we reported that Jeremy Renner is circling the role of a young drifter who becomes the leader's right hand man and mentor, until he starts to question his beliefs. With those two actors in the leading roles, Anderson could have a damn fine film.
Let's get this shit made! I want more PT Anderson films! Anyone else want to throw some money at this project? I've got $4.00.
