Universal Studios Orlando to close Jaws ride

Dec. 2, 2011by: Alex Riviello

Fans of the 20 year-old JAWS attraction at Universal Studios Orlando may want to get there as soon as possible, because they've just reported that it will close come January.

From their Facebook page- Hey fans, we want you to be the first to know… JAWS! and the Amity area will officially close on January 2 to make room for an exciting, NEW, experience we’re planning for you.

We know you love JAWS! and we do too. It has been an amazing attraction and after terrorizing the waters of Amity here at Universal Orlando for 20 years, it’s a VERY important part of our history. So, we’ve got a couple things planned to ensure we always remember and honor it. We know it’s hard to say goodbye, but we can’t express how EXCITED we are about the new, innovative & amazing experience we’re going to be bringing you.

Common knowledge states that the adjacent Islands of Adventure have been kicking the Studio's ass lately, simply because superheroes and the new Harry Potter section are simply far more interesting to kids than old summer blockbusters. They're sure to put something similarly new and attractive to crowds in the space it occupied.

To be honest, it wasn't much of an attraction to begin with. No one screamed like the people in that picture above, ever. Even Stephen Spielberg himself made fun of the ride in a short film Trey Parker and Matt Stone made for Universal Studios 16 years. Check it out below starting at around the :45 mark (but really, just watch the whole thing).

Sucks....they better have something great prepared. It's going to be big though. They better leave ET the ride, and the Beetlejuice show and Lucy exhibit forever though.
I hope it doesn't have to do with the Fast and Furious (they could conceivably theme a big coaster to it), is that the only modern franchise they haven't made a ride with? Maybe they'll get rights to something like LOTR in time for the Hobbit films?

I'll miss the old ride, but I understand the need to update it. I'd love for them to include the ride as a special feature on the blu-ray like they did with Back to the Future so that I'll have the option of re-living it. And give us Jaws on blu-ray already!

Rode it when I was 12

Oh I know I'll get neg'd to all hell for this but...

Disney-MGM (now Disney Hollywood) Studios > Universal Studios

Just personal childhood experience. Even though Universal Studios was the place I was looking forward to, it was at Disney/MGM Studios where I had a blast. Indiana Jones stunt show, Star Tours, Tower of Terror, MuppetVision...joy after joy after joy.

As for Universal Studios, the wait times were so abysmally long that I only got to go on King Kong (awesome) and Jaws (meh.)

The ride lost me the moment the guide said 'we keep grenade launchers on the boat just in case.' And whereas MGM had all sorts of cool shit to see and touch and walk around in when you weren't on rides...Universal just felt like five rides with a mall built around them.

Wow that makes ET and the Makeup Show as the only survivors of the originals that started it all. Damn universal. They started with adult classics like Hitchcock presents, went down the drain with herc and xena, and now one of the greatest fish stories of all time is gonna go belly up. I hope they at least have a new water ride there. Not many good places to get wet besides the kiddy areas.

Lucy: A Tribute is an original attraction that is still running, but technically that's not a show or ride.

Actually that one is a mere echo of its former self. The makeup show and ET are truly the only ones left.

Attraction was outdated and expensive to maintain....

However, I will never forgive Universal Studios for taking Back to the Future: The Ride out to be replaced by the Simpsons. F*ck that sh*t.....

Aw man

I was upset when they closed down the Back to the Future attraction, and I'll be just as upset when JAWS goes too. I hope that the "couple things planned" to remember the attraction wont be just leaving the hanging Kodak shark where it is, like they left the DeLorean where it was to honor BTTF. Didn't seem like much of an homage to me.

Also, people actually DID scream like in the picture. Kids loved the shit out of the ride and went nuts when JAWS surfaced, as I remember.

Sorry to the writer of this article but you didn't really do your homework. The ride that Spielberg is making fun of that "isn't much of a ride" is the JAWS piece from Universal Hollywood... that's just a 60 second version where the tram stops in the water and the shark comes alongside of it.

The one that they're actually closing is in Universal Orlando and was a humongous and extravagant ride that was about 5-6 minutes in length. It took you all around Amity and you were attacked by the

The one that they're actually closing is in Universal Orlando and was a humongous and extravagant ride that was about 5-6 minutes in length. It took you all around Amity and you were attacked by the shark 4 times, including a final epic confrontation with fireballs and a scary as hell explosion inside of a boat house. This attraction kicked all sorts of ass and I'm sad to see it go.

Damn

Worked there for 5 years. Excellent ride. Have heard something to the tune of them expanding the Harry Potter attractions into both parks. Lagoon will be filled in by Spring break.
