Universal wants Scarlett Johansson for The Creature from the Black Lagoon

As Universal still plots out the next phase of their monster-centric cinematic universe, we have yet to see much progress on THE MUMMY reboot or other projects. With only DRACULA UNTOLD released thus far, the question was when we would learn about a new Wolfman or beyond. Now, it looks like one character left untouched for decades may be on the way.

The Tracking Board reports that Universal is looking to possibly cast Scarlett Johansson in a remake of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Indications would have her stepping into the role played by Julia Adams in the 1954 original which has gone on to become an iconic movie image and a template for horror movie heroines ever since. Johansson has played roles in films big and small in recent years and this would be a distinct genre shift for her, but moving the setting to a contemporary setting would afford the opportunity to turn the character from a scream queen to a strong female lead.

THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake is set to be produced by Gary Ross from a screenplay penned by Ross, Jeff Blitz, Tedi Sarafian, and Paul Schering. Ross has other films in development but he could be a contender to helm this remake depending on when it happens. Johansson has obligations to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I am sure she could find some time to make this movie over the next year or so.

The current remake is taking shape at Universal, with Larger Than Life and Strike Entertainment producing. Gary Ross, Robin Bissell, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, with a screenplay by Jeff Blitz, Gary Ross, Tedi Sarafian and Paul Schering. Leslie Urdang, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Jay Polidoro will oversee development for the studio.

I think this could be a good role for Scarlett if done right. The tough thing about remakes for me is that I will always go into one thinking of the original. If they somehow turn this into another cheesy remake like some others than this could be a fail. I personally love Scarlett Johansson so I'd love to see this play out.

Yeah, she'd fit the bill as a 1950s era scream queen. That'd be great.

The ending of Dracula Untold has me worried though. I hope all these Universal Monster movies are period, at least the first round of them. I'd prefer it if they got into the modern era in the round of sequels that may come if they're a success.

Of course, they really should to a sequel to the Wolfman with Hugo Weaving in the lead, which you could then set at any point from the 1800s forward.

Yup, seems to be the perfect fit for the role. I love love love the original. This is the remake that I cross my fingers for the most. Get a good director that can give it a similar feel to the original, but still be spooky.

Scarlett Johansson is a modern day Marilyn or Hepburn- kinda both at once. I like the Lana Turner look with the Hepburn flare. Re-making Creature From the Black Lagoon with ScarJo in the lead is a win in my book. She's due for another genuine solo top lining hit (seeing as, amazingly, LUCY is her only bonafide financially successful film as the lead)

I dunno how you are picturing this movie going down or if you have actually seen the original, but I think it is very unlikely this will be "another genuine solo top lining hit" for old ScoJo. I just hope they give her more to do in the remake than be a live bait for a horny lagoon monster... and I seriously hope they do not try to make another ridiculous action reboot like they are doing with the Mummy...
