Universal's The Wolfman is getting a reboot?

Jun. 8, 2011by: Dave Davis

The recent update of Universal's classic lycanthrope THE WOLFMAN held plenty of promise but didn't prove entirely satisfying -- even director Joe Johnston acknowledged its flaws.

But that hardly means we've seen the last of the legendary fanged moon-howler. In fact, it seems as though the studio already wants to reboot the property for the big screen. Universal had been considering a sequel to last year's disappointment, but Moviehole says that intended follow-up is now "being rewritten and reworked to be an original film – almost a reboot of the classic Universal monster movie series."

Benicio del Toro obviously won't be back in the fur shirt, but Moviehole says the new project will look for directors soon for a possible start in the fall. And it might even get a different title... possibly just WEREWOLF.

The new movie will apparently share some kind of link to the studio's 1941 Lon Chaney version of the folklore tale, about a guy suffering from a curse that causes him to uncontrollably transform into a hairy, murderous beast every full moon.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you want to see direct and/or star in a rebooted WOLFMAN? Or do you just say, why bother?

The Wolfman just came out last year and they're already talking reboot? Hey, why wait so long? Let's just start rebooting before booting... that way we can get it right BEFORE we screw it up.

Really don't see the big deal. Yes, it was left open for a sequel, but at the same time, how many Dracula movies have we had? I'll just consider this an alternative tale. Reboot is just the latest word everyone loves to hate.

The Wolfman is a little underrated, I enjoyed it. I say keep Benicio and just make a sequel that's better.

I don't understand... did we just completely run out of writers with original screenplays?

I'm a diehard Classic Universal Monster fan, I know I'm one of the few who loved Johnson's take so I say bring it on. As long as its more werewolf mayhem in that classic-y vein, I'm game!

lol calm down. I see what you're saying, my point was that anything and everything Wolfman is fine with me. I wasn't really considering the word "reboot." If they want to try something "better" regarding Wolfie then I wouldn't say nay.

If you were one of the few who loved Johnson's [sic] film, then why the fuck are you the only person here who wants a reboot? If you were happy with the film I'd assume you'd want a proper sequel, or nothing at all...the reboot is essentially a fuck-you to Johnston's film.

Lose Del Toro, keep Hugo Weaving. Or did his character die in the movie? I dont remember. Put Hugo Weaving in it anyway.

I'm all for more classic Universal monster updates. But Wolfman??? I actually enjoyed the Del Toro one. How about Creature from the Black Lagoon or Bride of Frankenstein or something like that? This is just a stupid idea.

I loved the remake with Benicio!! I'm all for wolfman movies that don't involve somebody named Jacob but why bother with another reboot.

Though it didnt have the critics' praise and wasnt ranked high on Rotten Tomatoes (the end-all, be-all website that some people solely base their opinions on), I thought the Wolfman was a pretty legit monster movie. Not sure what people expected. Maybe if the wolfman played basketball and surfed on top of a van to 'Surfin USA,' it woulda been better received.

I actually didn't mind the last Wolfman. This news is unbelievable and definitely uncreative! I'm tired of the quick reboots.

I say why bother. The Benicio/Blunt version had its moments and its flaws, but was not horrible, let alone enough to justify a reboot so quickly! Blarg. My favorite part though, is my Mondo screen printed poster! Ahhhhh, memorabilia!

They are surely trying to get a series going. And The Wolfman wasn't a bad film, actually quite good, however it was somewhat boring, I cannot say why.

NO REBOOT! come on Hollywood! If you're achin' for another Werewolf film, how about Marvel Comics "Werewolf By Night"? the story of Jack Russell (a teen) dealing with "curse of the Werewolf",from the pages of Marvel Comics.+ So many Marvel Universe characters could be weaved into the storyline. Brother Voodoo-Topaz-(Marvel's) Dracula - (Marvel's) Frankenstein Monster-Moon Knight -Ghost Rider etc.

Werewolf?

I actually really liked the Joe Johnston version, and don't understand what all the complaints about it are about. I thought it did a fine job, and I'm not a big fan of retreads by any means.

Talbot (Del Toro) is dead, so no need to bring back his character. But there's two other routes they could go.

What those who aren't familiar with the Universal Monsters films may not realize, is that the back story that was given to Del Toro's father in the Joe Johnston version also happens to be very similar to the Werewolf Of London story.

Werewolf of London. Werewolf?

Could it be that the proposal is just such a prequel?

Only time will tell.

Wow

I seriously can't believe this many people reading this site liked the Wolfman with Benicio...Are you guys joking? You have no rights to watch horror flicks if that one you thought was good. Crappy CGI..Check. Leaving characters alive for absolutely NO reason other than to set up a sequel...Check. Crappy end fight between the 2 wolves that ends with a horrible CGI head of Hopkins...Check. Just stop guys, that movie sucked and we all know it. To the person below me, I have no problem with

To the person below me, I have no problem with set ups for sequels, but there was literall NO reason for the wolf not to kill Hugo Weaving at the end, I believe I had even read a report that Joe Johnson really liked him so he changed the end to have him live, it's that kind of thing that bothers me. Let's face it, the Wolfman is an awesome property, it should have been handled way better than it was.

In case you're unaware, the original Wolfman had something like 5 or 6 sequels, so it wasn't surprising that they'd try to set one up.

I thought the fight was fine.

Other than that, the CGI seems to be your biggest gripe. I really didn't think it was all that bad. Certainly it was better than the suit of radioactive bacon that Green Lantern is slathering himself in. But that's just my opinion.
