Unlock the secret in this new trailer for Martin Scorsese's Hugo

07.14.2011

It's just so pretty...

That was my initial reaction to the trailer for Martin Scorsese's HUGO. After taking all of it in, I realized that I just watched a trailer for a Scorsese film that wasn't filled with killing, crime, and colorful language.

It's all very enchanting from start to finish. I never read the book the film is based on by Brian Selznick so it's impossible for me to have an opinion on whether this paints the same picture. That aside, it looks like Scorsese may have successfully made a family film. As if there were any doubts. Well, I didn't doubt him anyway. Still don't care for the title change though.

Check it out below.

"Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key. Based on Brian Selznick's award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, this magical tale is Academy Award(R)-winner Martin Scorsese's first film shot in 3D."

:(

As some one who is a huge Scorsese fan, I'll give this a shot, but it doesn't feel like anything Scorsese would do. And I'm shocked he shot a film in 3D. I always pegged him to be a film purist. There is so much CGI, and goofy prat falls, it's almost like someone took over Scorsese's brain. Not my cup of tea. Give me the Shutter Island, Goodfellas, Mean Streets Scorsese over this any day.

This film is going to be good i can feel it but i hated the trailer it was too long showed too many key ponts and the addition of the dumb 30 seconds to mars song made it all that much worse.

I like 30 Seconds To Mars but i must agree, that wasn't the right choice for a song. On the other hand, it got me thinking of how I miss Jared Leto "The Actor" and how it would be cool to see him again and instead of singing in the background music for the trailer of a Scorsese film but to actually be in one... Think about it. And if you think he can't act then you obviously don't know your film and you have not seen Darren Aronofsky's follow up to his first film Pi, Requiem For A Dream...

My question is...

How do all you folks hating that 30 Seconds to Mars song even know that's what it is? Are you just sitting around listening to and memorizing music you hate, getting angrier and angrier, just for an opportunity like this?

I'm optimistic, but I really hope it doesn't have the sentimental vibe this trailer suggests it does. Right now, it reminds me of Spielberg at his worst, where everything's got to be some kind of heart-warming or endearing thing.

Really hope Scorsese can bring a little of that hard edge he's known for into it.

Hard edge to a family friendly children's book? Are you familiar with the book this movie is based off? Also a lot of the stuff Ive read said this is a true family movie.

I'm not sure how I feel about that, is it really going to be a Scorsese movie?

I think it looks great. Directed by Scorsese, written by John Logan. It will be great. Its not their fault the studio put together one of the worst trailers ever. They are trying to appeal to kids who probably won't like it anyway. 30 Seconds to Mars? Really. Fuck you Paramount.

Horrible Trailer

Instead of choosing some nice Amélie-like music, that would fit the period and create an authentic atmosphere we get 30 seconds to mars??? Hugo looks like a psycho-kid straight out of a ghostmovie. It all looks staged. I just don't feel it. Too bad because I was really looking forward to this...

Looks pretty indeed.

But I never expected to be disappointed in a song choice by Mr. Scorsese.

30 Seconds to fucking Mars.

I'm getting tired of all movies being marketed to children. Seems movies for adults are becoming an extinct species. This is just too childish for my taste.

Ugh. This trailer makes it seem like there isn't a plot of any kind. I'm gonna give Scorsese the benefit of the doubt he deserves and read the book's summary at Wikipedia - assuming it's there. Brb.

Look likes a pretty film, just a poorly put together trailer, more of a recap of the entire movie. Still holding out hope.

Trailer plays like a short film. Incomplete, though. I don't quite get why all the negativity. Sure, Scorsese has dabbled in some genre work less ably than the crime movie, but I think this looks pretty amazing, like Spielberg might've tackled twenty years ago.

Well that wasn't exactly what I was HOPING to see from the Hugo trailer, but I could still see this being good. Not a great trailer though.

Nope. This is another one of Scorsese's experimental films. The last time I was burned by one of them was Bringing Out the Dead.
I'll catch this one when Netflix starts streaming it.

30 Seconds to Mars? Really?

I've have never actively hated a Scorsese flick before but I think he's pushing it with this one: lame humor, 3D, annoying British kids.
I'll probably see it, but Jesus.

Sorry they lost me at 3D adventure. I can't believe someone like Scorsese would get involved in a stupid gimmick. Pass.

I believe this movie will be a great movie in general and not just for the kids, but I think the marketing will kill this movie just by seeing the trailer
