UPDATE: Has Marvel regained the film rights to Fantastic Four?

10.15.2015

UPDATE: We've reached out to Fox who have confirmed that this rumor is NOT true and that they've always had the X-Men TV rights. Debunked!

Yesterday it was announced that Marvel and Fox had reached a deal that will allow Fox to create two television series set in the X-Men world, and according to Den of Geek, Marvel may have gotten something in exchange: the FANTASTIC FOUR film rights. The site does caution that they "don't have an independent source to back this claim up," but after three lackluster big screen outings from Fox, Marvel's first family might finally be returning home.

According to Den of Geek's source, the deal has been in the works for some time, and that one of the recently announced untitled 2020 Marvel movies is in fact a FANTASTIC FOUR film. All of this sounds too good to be true, so I'm more than a little skeptical about the site's report, but it would be awesome if was legit, especially since one would assume that the movie rights would include characters associated with the comic book superhero team, like Silver Surfer and Galactus.

However, last we knew Fox was still moving forward with a sequel to Josh Trank's critically panned FF movie, so I would definitely treat this as just a rumor, and we'll have to wait and see if there's an official announcement from Marvel or Fox.

Extra Tidbit: Trank's FANTASTIC FOUR made about the same amount of money in its 9-week domestic theatrical run as the 2005 film did in its opening weekend.

Maybe...

But they were denying Spiderman only weeks before it was a thing.

I suspect there has at least been a discussion on the subject.

Also I find it interesting this all comes a week after Marvel announce three untitled films in 2020.

I know, its funny how people seem to believe it just because Fox says its not true... like they cant lie either. And when you think about it, it all lines up. And i just dont see Fox being that stubborn where they will just bleed money on this property.

F4 would make perfect sense to be one of the 2020 films. If Marvel did regain the rights, they wouldn't want to bring this back in less than 5 years. There's a bad taste in everyone's mouths and that needs to subside a bit first. Would also be an epic way to add to the new Avengers roster once our current heroes are out.

Fox and Disney made a trade, and it's the worst kept secret in hollywood. Disney gave Fox the TV rights to the X-men, and Fox gave Disney the Fantastic Four movie rights. Fox (supposedly) will also be able to the use the Hulk for 'Old Man Logan' for one film. I like all aspects of the trade.

If thats true about the Hulk, that would be quiet something. Not sure how the average movie goer will feel about a bad Bruce Banner with his abominations. Especially after the fact how awesome Disney has gotten him in recent films.

This would be very cool indeed...which is why it's probably not going to happen... but I say that so the opposite happens ;o) I don't know about anyone else...but I'd appreciate a meeting between Johnny Storm and a cameo appearing Cap America in their first Marvel backed movie...with Cap saying, you have a lot to live up to kid...coz lets face it, Human Torch (and the Thing) were one of the few things to have been done well in the first two movies.

If this turns out to be true, man this would be awesome. It would give Marvel what they need, some true villians in Dr. Doom and Galactus. Fingers crossed...

I really hope eventually Fantastic Four rights will go back to Marvel. They know how to handle their properties properly.

Yeah me too actually. I mean there are definitely things I don't like about it but overall if I sit down and watch it I have a good time. I point the finger more at Iron Man 2.

@kenmasters what a dick - the double post is penis behaviour indeed but to group every Marvel film along the same line as Iron Man 3 - what a complete cunt. I agree IM3 isn't a bad film, but on the whole a studio who have made some serious cash and produced some great films Iron Man, Cap 1&2, Gotg, Avengers, Thor as well as in the main getting casting absolutely spot on RDJ, Hemsworth, Evans, Johanson, Jackson and even as far as Brolin, Pratt and Hiddlestone. I really hope this guy has special

Iron Man 3 might just be the worst thing Marvel has done. A dumb plot, ruining what could have been a great villain, Tony Stark McGuyver, plot holes all over and a lack of any real good action or laughs. 2 is a masterpiece by comparison.

This would be fantastic (pun intended) if this were to actually come true. I would love to see the Fantastic Four join the MCU and best of all for Marvel to use Dr Doom, Galactus, and Silver Surfer properly in their future storylines.

And if Mads Mikkelsen doesn't end up signing up for Doctor Strange, then I would love to see him cast as Dr. Doom.

Hmmmm

This would be cool if true and interesting to see how a Marvel lead FF film would go. I hope they could pull off something great and prove that it can work if done right. If it still ended up sucking though that would be pretty much proof that these characters and what not just don't work on the silver screen for whatever reason.
