Update: Here's who we might get to see team up in Avengers: Infinity War

01.14.2015

UPDATE: CBR contacted a Sony rep, who "dismissed the report, calling it an 'old rumor' with 'no validity whatsoever.'" Somehow, I think we'll be hearing Spidey rumors like this for a while now. - PS

While rumors can sometimes be fun to play around with in our heads, they usually do not amount to much but wishful thinking. But, every now and then, a rumor turns out to be spot on. With Marvel projecting their film slates a half decade into the future, something is bound to be revealed in advance. We may not receive corroboration until the films are released, but that is all part of the fun in the build up, isn't it?

Latino Review, not exactly the bastion of reliable sources, has posted their latest unsubstantiated rumors which are both cobbled together from sources and their own inference. Based on what they have to say, Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a big game changer for the comic book franchises.

Keep in mind that even though these are rumors, they are spoiler heavy, so if you don't want to know anything you should turn back now.

According to the story, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will see the reveal that Bucky killed Howard Stark which pits Steve Rogers against Tony Stark. In the end, Tony's fate is unknown but Captain America will be dead. In THOR: RAGNAROK, Asgard will be attacked and Thor will end the film in some sort of galactic prison. This means that BLACK PANTHER and DOCTOR STRANGE will not have to rely on as many overt connections to the prior MCU films, leading up to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART I.

Which brings us to May 4th, 2018 - Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1. Here's what I understand: Steve Rogers is not in this movie. He is dead. Thor is not in this movie, he is imprisoned. Spider-Man IS in this movie, the Sony deal went through.

Crazy, right? They go on to say that Spider-man will not be Andrew Garfield but a new MCU version of the character. They also theorize that AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART II will see all of the jettisoned Avengers like the dead Steve Rogers, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor return to team up with the new line-up that could also include characters from INHUMANS, CAPTAIN MARVEL, and other films.

Again, there is no support for any of these theories, but they are adamant that the Sony deal is done and Spider-man will now be a part of the MCU. Whether this turns out to be true or not, we have at least 3 years before we will know so get your tickets pre-booked for San Diego Comic Con 2018.

Things kick into gear with the release of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 1, 2015.

There's no way a recast Spidey/Peter Parker makes his debut via a mere cameo in someone else's flick.

Whew!

I'm actually relieved that Spider-Man is not going to be in Infinity War after all. I would rather they did Spider-Man as a Netflix series first so they could do his origin one more time and keep him separate from the Sony Spider-Man. I would be happy if Spider-Man never appeared in Marvel movies as long as he was appearing in Sony movies.

We've heard some of these rumors before dating back to before Phase 3 was announced. We know for a fact that Part I will not feature Thor. Iron Man, Hulk or Cap in prominent roles. A role for Spider-Man is still a rumor. How Captain America can appear in Infinity War Part II if he is dead at the end of Civil War I don't know. I don't believe it: more likely he just quits being Cap due to injuries. I also don't believe the rumor that the Winter Soldier is responsible for Howard Stark's

It's also not clear why Tony would blame Captain America for his father's death. It makes no sense.

Cynicism be damned...

In keeping with my reformed 2015 positive fanboy experience, I will say, none of this is bad news. It's fun to speculate and I think at some point, one of these dudes has to die. I always thought Old Tony woulda been first to go, but se la vie.
I'm just enjoying the hell outta the whole MCU. It's a fun time to be movie lover, it truly is.

Well if this is true it is certainly interesting. Cap happens to be my favorite marvel character, always has been. What can I say, in todays world, its nice to see what that boy scout ideal and how powerful it can truly be. So with that said, I'd be bummed if he didn't appear in A;IW part 1, but is kinda awesome that they plan on him and Thor returning. Also maybe giving Hemsworth and Evans a break to do other things and mentally recoup for a few years would be a good thing. might reinvigorate

I know age will eventually set in and no one can play a role forever (no matter how much stallone tries lol), but they both have a lot of gas in the tank still. Overall if that is the story arc its a good one. It certainly shows they aren't afraid to actually tell a story and change the formula some by taking risks. And make no mistake, jettisoning the guys that built your empire for a few years in favor for unproven properties, is no doubt a risk.

p.s. God it would be fucking nice to have Spiderman in capable hands wouldn't it? Yes Raini's SM2 was great, but give me some MARVEL spiderman.

It was revealed Sony and Marvel were having talks about Spider-Man appearing in Captain America 3. Sony was trying to figure out whether they would keep Garfield or not and how they could spin off Spider-Man into more solo films after Cap 3 that they would have sole control over, and of course how they would split the box offfice.

Talks were said to have gone no further than that: talks.

Logistically, I don't see how this merger could work without Marvel giving more than they're getting. I

Logistically, I don't see how this merger could work without Marvel giving more than they're getting. I don't think Sony is selling the property in it's entirety back to Disney, they're just leasing SM out. So if Sony still owns it, how do they go back to making solo films after Infinity War without being able to reference the MCU? Really, it's Sony that's benefiting the most from this. They get to keep SM but still have it be part of MCU.

And a surprise cameo from Thomas Jane as the Punisher .In the comics Captain America loses it and beats Punisher within a inch of his life but Punisher refuses too fight back since he respects Cap so much. That would be a powerful scene in the movie if filmed.

I'll wait and see

The idea of them having the endings for both Civil War and Ragnarok sounds like bullshit to me. I know Feige said sometime ago he knows where the characters eventually end up, but the part of Steve Rogers not appearing in Avengers: Part 1 goes against reports of Evan's contract ending with Avengers: Part I. Also, if Thor, Iron Man, and Steve are all not in the first part of The Avengers, that seems very sketchy and relies too heavily on the successes of Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and

I don't mind the inclusion of Spider-Man (Sony giving Marvel the rights to the character wouldn't be surprising at this point).

The problem with the Spiderman movies is that Sony is trying to make them the same way Marvel Studios has created the Avengers universe. Fox has it a little better with a ton of Xmen characters to work with, and Warner Brothers has a treasure chest of DC titles. Sony only owns Spiderman and just can't compete. Their big mistake was trying to compete. Spiderman movies couldve been great if they just treated them as individual movies, and not part of something bigger. Now they've dug themselves

Now they've dug themselves into such a hole that lending him out to Disney for a share of the profits may be their best bet. I still have my doubts that Spiderman will show up in the MCU, but Sony needs to get their shit together fast. I suggest they buy Dark Horse comics or something and just start building that universe.

Gotta say, if this is how things pan out then I'm gonna be happy with it. My thought on individual snippets:
Spider-Man. I SO want Spidey to be part of the MCU. That would be awesome. Ideally I'd like Garfield back, but if that really is a no go then I just hope whoever they cast gets to be Spider-Man for some time, and across the board. I don't really want one Peter Parker for Sony and another Marvel.

Thor - Okay, nothing much to comment there, that all sounds about right...

Cap &

Thor - Okay, nothing much to comment there, that all sounds about right...

Cap & Stark - If they're doing Civil War, someone needs to die. I was thinking maybe they'll swerve and kill a completely different character (Jeremy Renner does insist Hawkeye's in the film, right?), but killing Cap would tie to the comics - but it's the bringing him back element I'm sure about. Yes Evans has another film in the contract, but I want dead characters to stay dead (so far that's not happening ie Coulson, Fury. Some people need to stay dead for death to be a threat. I'll roll with it though - I trust Marvel based on the 10 films they've given us so far.

The idea of Bucky being Howard Stark's murderer? That makes a lot of sense. Got a question though... will we see it? Does this mean another film for John Slattery because - just saying - Slattery's in Ant-Man. As is Peggy, and a younger Alexander Pierce? Presumably a younger Hank Pym... could we have a surprise cameo from Sebastian Stan? Maybe see Winter Soldier do the deed in Ant-Man as a stinger to Phase 2?

Also, just wanna say - if the above report turns out false I have my on theory on what they'll do. I predict to my friends that I think the climax to Infinity War Part 1 will see the 'front line' big guns all taken out - Iron Man, Cap, Thor all bite the bullet... meaning a new wave of heroes will have to take over for Part 2. :-)

VERY early to hear about a rumor like this.
Likely if it did Sony would be announcing it since their Spidey franchise is losing fan respect.

Sounds like bullshit! If the deal with Sony went through, I'm sure more than one site would be reporting on it.

Also, at this point I highly doubt that Marvel plans to kill off Steve Rogers and put an end to that franchise just yet.

The Thor rumor I could believe. Thor hasn't been a major blockbuster compared to the other MCU films released, so it's not like they're depending on Thor given the other movies they're planning on releasing in the next 5 years. But at the same time, leaving

If this is true I hope they keep Garfield, we don't need another origin story. All they'd have to do really is have Thanos (with the full infinity gauntlet) cause some dimensional rip in space time that Spider-Man could get sucked through. That dimensional rip could be the catalyst for this group of new heroes to take up arms against him as well.

Better yet, have Spider-Man burst through the rip and warn all the earth heroes that Thanos is coming, and he already destroyed Sony Spider-Man's fucked up reality.

Poor Andrew Garfield. Fucked over by being cast in the worst two Spider-Man movies then recast when Marvel swoops in to save the character from Sony. As bad as TAS1 and 2 were I'd prefer they keep Garfield, if only because I really have no desire to see the character rebooted for a third time.

Evans has a six film contract with Marvel and his cameo in Thor didnt count. If he dies in Cap3, then he wouldve only done 5. This contradicts the above rumor, unless there is some sort of a flashback, which i imagine would have to be a lengthy flashback, considering they are counting cameos as part of the six film deal

Still early days . . .

I'll start believing rumours when the flick's in the editing room. That said, I'd like to see Sony and Disney work out a deal to have Spider-Man be part of the MCU. Marvel/Disney have clearly developed a successful model for comic-based movies (don't stray too far from the source material!) and Sony would rather have a piece of a successful franchise than control a failing one.

The only downside would be that Spidey would likely be recast. That's a shame, since I thought Andrew Garfield

Why do I somehow remember in Winter Soldier that they hinted heavily that Bucky was the one that killed Howard? Did someone say something about causing someone's car accident or something? I swear we already had an idea about this. I'll be surprised, though, if the entire blow up stems from this revelation. As much as I hate the Civil War storyline with a passion, the New Warriors causing a catastrophic accident is essential to the registration angle for the plot. They'll have to have something

And this would be a great way to get Jeff Bridges and John Slattery together for a flashback cameo of what happened on that night.

This sounds pretty epic on every level. But I don't believe that Captain America will be dead, just believed to be dead until he can come out of hiding.

And as for Spider Man being in this, I'll believe it when we get a better confirmation. But if it is true, and with a whole new recasting, then this is pretty fantastic that one of the most iconic superheroes will be in one of the most iconic comic book stories of all time. Would love to see Marvel's interpretation of Spider Man.

I genuinely believe Spiderman will show up in a Marvel movie.

But not like this. An apppearance in Civil War is the big thing as his reveal in the comics was pivitol to the story.
Yes they might get him back for Avengers but this (well most of it) seems a little far fetched...

Sounds like a blast. I like how they will keep the focus of Infinite War Part 1 on the newer guys and then bring in the big guns and revive people for part 2. I knew CA would die in his third movie, that much was obvious but I was waiting for news on how they would bring him back for Infinite War.
