Update of The Hunchback of Notre Dame on the way with director Zhang Yimou

We've already got DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN and THE MUMMY coming back for more, so why not the Hunchback of Notre Dame?

Variety reports that Chinese director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) is in line to direct QUASIMODO, based on a screenplay by Kieran and Michele Mulroney and inspired, of course, by the classic Victor Hugo novel.

Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film. The most famous portrayal of the character came in 1939, when Charles Laughton unforgettably transformed himself into the deformed, tragic hero.

The original HUNCHBACK tells the story of..

The beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, condemned as a witch by the tormented archdeacon Claude Frollo, who lusts after her. Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral, having fallen in love with the kindhearted Esmeralda, tries to save her by hiding her in the cathedral’s tower. When a crowd of Parisian peasants, misunderstanding Quasimodo’s motives, attacks the church in an attempt to liberate her, the story ends in tragedy.
