Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Apr. 10, 2009

There just aren't enough good Viking movies, and Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (whose recent BRONSON won raves) obviously wants to change that with VALHALLA RISING.

CASINO ROYALE's Mads Mikkelsen steps up his capacity for violence from Bond ballsmacking to killing the sweet Nordic shit out of anyone in his path. The synopsis: For years, One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the chieftain Barde. Aided by a boy, Are, he kills his captor and together they escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight from bounty hunters, One-Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that first disintegrates as they sight an unknown land. As the new land reveals its secrets and the Vikings meet a ghastly fate, One-Eye discovers his true self.

The groovy gents at Twitch have the trailer -- dig the subtitled medieval carnage below.

Extra Tidbit: Mikkelsen and Refn worked together on BLEEDER and two-thirds of the PUSHER trilogy, all of which you should watch.

Shucks...
I thought this was going to be news on THOR. They should throw the origin of the NordicTrack in this crap-fest.

Rock on Refn
This will be great.

Yet to see Bronson (which looks awesome), but The Pusher trilogy and Bleeder are brilliant. Fear X is also pretty great, strange, but very unique (the film sent Refn into near bankruptcy - see the documentary THE GAMBLER).

Refn is also a fanatic for cinema, someone that really gives a shit about what he does, so really can't wait.

Definitely not enough Viking movies. One of the more interesting parts of European history, but the majority of movies about them are pretty bad. Hopefully the fact this is directed by a Dane will lend a certain extra something to it.
