Venom: The Movie?!

Jul. 31, 2008by:

Since the very first SPIDER-MAN film, comic fans have been clamoring for their big-screen fix of their favorite Spidey villain Venom. They got their wish in SPIDER-MAN 3 only that movie wasn't all that good and Venom only appeared for about 15 minutes. But don't think that hasn't waned interest in Venom. In fact Sony Pictures is moving ahead on a VENOM movie and is actively looking for writers to work on a new script and actors who could carry a picture of this scope. Yup, you heard that last part correctly. Don't expect Topher Grace to return to the role he filmed in SPIDER-MAN 3 as apparently Sony is "not yet convinced" he can carry a big tentpole movie. The spin that the standalone film would follow is that Venom's symbiotic alien creature would ditch Eddie Brock and bond itself to a new human host. Sony is hot to get a new superhero property kicking aside from the SPIDER-MAN films. How exactly you frame a movie around a villain without the use of him main nemesis remains to be seen. While the Venom comics with Spider-Man were always gold, his spin-offs always left a bit to be desired. Do you think VENOM would work and how so?

Extra Tidbit: Mac Gargan, the former Scorpion, is the current Venom.

Venom

The only way this movie will work is if they make it a Venom vs. Carnage film, that I'm willing to go see, and please, if this happens, DON'T bring back Topher Grace, he suck'd as Venom in S3 and ruined the character, so yeah...V vs. C.

Great news

I think alot of people are here are unaware of Venoms story beyond his origin story, after a few years he levels off and becomes a anti hero of sorts(he's still always pissed at Peter)

This is awesome, some of Marvels best comics in the last decade where the Venom standalones. He was just a cooler looking punisher who had the potential to flip sides:)

um yeah....

It can't be done as long as Sony has it's hands in it. The bar has been raised with The Dark Knight and will be again with Watchmen. Being a long time MARVEL fan I can honestly say that the marvel universe is basically for pre-teens as well as teenagers. So... basically the Marvel universe needs to take a long needed rest.

VENOM & CARNAGE

If they can do as well in the CGI department as they did on Spidey 3... Add Carnage in there... I may see hope for ONE film but no more than that... It's really hard to say. I agree with most that it's not likely to be done right, but I would like to see them try. My hope for the Spidey franchise was ALWAYS to lead into the Venom and Carnage saga... So I can't say no to this.

Anything w/o Arrogant Topher can't be all bad!

I have no idea if this will be good, I'm just glad the cocky non-deserved Topher won't be back, what a jack-ass! It can't be worse than Spiderman 3? Can it? Yeah it probably can be but we can't always have "Dark Knights!" Too bad for that because they (superhero movies that is) all will be compared to it from now on.

I'd rather they didn't do this. Unless they get someone badass to direct it and write it, and someone better than topher grace to play venom.

of course it's my lifelong dream to see carnage on film but i'd rather dream about it than have someone f*ck it up.

I agree with those who have said bring back a new venom in spidy 4 (but do it right this time). Most people want to see the spidy vs. venom stories, not a stand alone venom movie.

That one standalone where he finds himself in the middle of a gang war was great.

NO!

Just put Carnage in the 4th film and do him justice and we'll at least try to forget about 3.

Wow, this idea has a very familiar odour about it.

It smells like...wait, what is that?

Oh, yeah: it smells like Halle Berry's 'Catwoman'.

Venom was flat-out butchered in Spidey 3. Nobody wants to see the most popular Spider-Man villain in his own movie, the only thing fans want to see is the character done justice in a Spidey movie. But Sony screwed that up when they forced the character on Raimi, so I hope they just drop this all together.

Sony should just admit they failed with Spider-Man 3 and carry on. Make a kick ass forth movie, that should be on their mind.

DON'T BOTHER

Much rather see him come back in another Spidey flick as the MAIN villain--they left it way too open to not do that (as there is still symbiote sample in Doc Conners' lab). And yes, it should be Eddie Brock Sr. and make the guy fuckin scary and built and looking for revenge for his son. Make Venom a psycho, you know, like he's supposed to be.

If he gets his own movie it'll be this "Lethal Protector" crap. It's just not necessary--he's much cooler as a villain.

I didnt even care that much about seeing Vemon in Spiderman 3, I doubt it could hold my attention for a feature lenght film.

I'm with BlackestNight...

...If this flick is set in the same "universe" as Raimi's flicks they should make Venom's host a big, tuff Eddie Brock Sr. I'd been thinking the same thing since Spidey 3 came out and we got a scrawny Brock Jr who pretty much sucked and died in the end...

Actually

at the end of spidey 3 when the pumpkin bomb goes off, eddy turns into a skeleton then [link] slow it down and watch.. so he's dead..if hes not then thats REALLY annoying

But the flip side is, a piece of symbiote got away, they showed it slip into the cracks after the explosion... so the only way he can get back is if his personality was stored in the symbiote and when it finds another host he basically takes control... just a thought with some clarifications..

STOP RIGHT THERE!

There is no way that Sony can pull off a great Venom movie, ever. Give it completely to Marvel Studios and I'd have a fraction of hope but Sony? Nah...they'll just make it suck so bad that it'll blow. Venom is one of my all-time favorite characters and I guess I have to thank Sam Raimi for f*ckin' the character up in Spidey 3. Leave it to Sony to f*ck him up even more somehow.

But, I think they could still feature Eddie Brock. Hear me out.

S P O I L E R A L E R T ! ! !

At the end of Spider-Man 3, the symbiote is stuck in the ring of metal pipes. Eddie Brock jumps in--at the same moment a pumpkin-bomb goes off, SEEMINGLY destroying both. However, who's to say that they actually DIED? You see...the bomb goes off, leaving the pipes warped and the ground scorched...but no gore, no blood, not even a black splotch or shred of clothing. Where'd they go? I'm

Where'd they go? I'm willing to wager not just to "PG requirement hell," but perhaps they ESCAPED. This movie could really take advantage of that possibility...but sadly, it doesn't sound like that will be the case.

So, I'm pretty neutral on this, for now.

imo, the only way I can see them redeeming Venom, is in the next movie, the piece of the symbiote in Doc Connor's lab escapes and finds a new host. Since I'm pretty sure Topher Grace played Eddie Brock JR in the movie that shall not be mentioned, the symbiote finds Eddie Brock Sr., a large, bodybuilder-esque man, who is distraught over his sons death, and blames Spider-man for killing him. There we go, Spider-man 4.

ooh we can base it off of the Lethal Protector mini-series and have Venom fight all those other symbiotes too!

Ugh, I think I just had a small stroke.

So they go out of their way to kill the character after a shit-soaked 13 minute appearance in their mega-hit and decide that he should be brought back in his own film?

Not well thought out there, huh?

eh...

I agree, this would be a [link] sony actually went through with spider-man 3, I think they (hopefully) learned their lesson. 3 was basically a satire of 1 & 2 and NO it was not funny.. at all...it was my most anticipated film and it made me realize the competence level of the Sony team and Sam Raimi went to a record low.

Personally, I think they should deliver a quality Spiderman film (Change cast and director, they serve no purpose anymore) and THEN do a venom spin off..they dont hav to
