Viggo Mortensen goes back On The Road with Amy Adams

08.04.2010

No, Viggo Mortensen isn't returning to Cormac McCarthy's bleak post-apocalypse, but he is planning to beat his feet on another cross-country trip.

Mortensen will appear in the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's influential semi-autobiography ON THE ROAD, playing Old Bull Lee. Amy Adams will portray his junkie wife Jane.

The movie, directed by Walter Salles (THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, DARK WATER) and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, also features Kirsten Dunst, TRON: LEGACY's Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley (CONTROL) as Kerouac's alter-ego Sal Paradise.

While you should probably already be familiar with the material, Kerouac's famous Beat Generation book chronicles the epic excess-and-music-fueled journey of a young man crisscrossing America in 1947.

Extra Tidbit: Coppola has held the film rights for the book since 1980.

Hollywood wanted Schumacher?

Oh, the horror. Although I did picture tons of neon and black-light when I read the book . . . Viggo? Hell yeah!

Old Bull Lee is supposed to be Burroughs, ya. I think the casting and director here is much better than what Hollywood was kicking around years ago when they wanted Schumacher to do this flick. I think Walter Salles is a great choice, as Motorcycle Diaries is one of the best road movies.

Great news

It's been ages since I read On the Road, but isn't Old Bull Lee supposed to be William Burroughs? Nevertheless I'd watch anything that has Viggo in it

Am I the only one who thinks Vigo Mortensen is a truly under appreciated actor who doesn't get damn near enough roles as he should.

I think he is under appreciated, but I also think it's his decision to appear in few movies. The guy is more about quality other than quantity.

Agree with you both. There are some likeness in his careful choosing of projects with Daniel Day Lewis.

If Viggo's in it,

that's usually a good sign for a film. Amy Adams is a bonus.

any news about viggo being in a movie,in my humble opinion, is good news. he never should have retired in the first place, so im glad he seems to be not going through with it

Viggo's "retirement" was a stupid rumour that got out of hand. He mused about what he'd do if he ever ditched acting in an interview and a journalist decided to turn it into a big news story.

So much for retiring. This cast is "different". Could be good I guess.
