Viggo on Road delay

12.06.2008

Fans of post-apocalyptic stories and author Cormac McCarthy (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) weren't the only ones dejected over the release date shuffle of THE ROAD (bounced from this past November to an undisclosed time next year).

While talking with AICN, the film's earthy star Viggo Mortensen expressed his understanding of the matter: "I think that they are really aware of the fact that they've got one chance to [adapt the book], and if there's any little things that they still want to work on a little more, to get it just right, whether it's the music --I don't know what it is -- a variety of things, they want to do it right. And, if you rush it out before you feel in good conscience it's there... So, I am disappointed. But, if they think they need a little more time, then I’d rather they took it than didn’t."

That seems like a reasonable reaction for a guy who conceivably could have received accolades for his work, had the film arrived in time for "award season." So when would he like to see it now? "What I hope they don’t do is then just put it out in February or something," suggests the Vig. "I hope they wait and do it at the right time."

Extra Tidbit: Unfortunately for Viggo, it's the Weinsteins (Dimension) who are releasing the movie, so there is literally no telling what they'll do with it...

Really enjoyed the book, and although delayed releases are normally a bad sign I still have high hopes for this movie. But basically this is an article stating Viggo's not sure why its delayed, so who does know the reason?

Still waiting

I totally agree with ButchTheBoxer16. I would be willing to wait until next year just to be sure that a quality movie gets delivered and that everyone's performances are taken well into account. The Road was an awesome book and the stills we have seen so far seem to maintain the vibe of the book.
This movie will probably not be a commercial success because of the subject matter but I prefer that over having the story suffer.

It's a shame about the delay. I had it pegged as a major Oscar contender after reading the book and seeing the propotion (Both Directed by john Hillcoat)

BUt with that said, I'm willing to wait if the makers need more time to perfect the movie. A book like that deserves careful treatment.

call me crazy

i read this fantastic book. it depressed and enthralled the shit out of me. i think that the economy is so fucked up that nobody would want to see this movie right now. i think thats why producers moved it.

This is going in the same category of the Soloist and Children of Men as shafted from the Oscar buzz.

Don't screw The Road!

They already screwed The Soloist's chances over by delaying it to March just like Zodiac a couple years back and it was totally forgotten come Oscar season, despite being great enough to have been nominated in several categories. I hope they don't do the same thing with The Road and release it in the spring. Hell, I am willing to wait until November of 2009 to see this, as long as it gets the recognition it deserves come Oscar time next year.

Space Bandito

As long as the ending remains. I don't think this movie is destined to be a box office success, but it will hopefully please fans of good books.
