Vin Diesel and David Twohy need 2 more Riddick films to complete the chronicles

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Vin Diesel and David Twohy's RIDDICK hits theaters this weekend, but the duo are already looking ahead to future installments in the Chronicles of Richard B. Riddick.

10 years in the making, RIDDICK was a very personal project for Twohy and Diesel. We recently told you of Diesel's passion for the character and his appreciation of the fans of the Riddick character, sharing how Diesel risked his home to make the current film happen. Twohy himself is just as passionate about the films, recently sharing with ScreenRant his desire to finish telling the story of Riddick in two more films, stating…

“I believe there are two more movies. And I think it’s good that we are looking at ending the series so it doesn’t feel like an open-ended thing, like we’re doing it just for monetary reasons and we’ve just got to keep rolling it over and rolling it over. I think there’s a real end to this and I know what that last movie looks like. The real question is: is it like a two-parter rather than a one-parter? So I think we’re both thinking the same thing, that there’s two more movies in the series.”

I am always up for another go-around in the Riddick Universe…er, UNDERverse. We can only hope that fans turn out in droves to support RIDDICK this weekend so that Diesel and Twohy can continue the story.

And as fans of the Riddick character know, the antihero is determined to get back to his home planet of Furya, and Twohy says that is part of the plan should the film succeed and further sequels eventually become a reality.

“That’s where we end up. I know what that movie looks like, I’ve talked it out. It has all the right notes, it’s a great movie. The real question is: what do you do before you get there? Is it a voyage through the Necromonger universe? Do you have to earn the right to return home by some trial of fire? That’s what we’re talking about doing. Perhaps.”

Dieself and Twohy have talked the future of Riddick in the past, recently talking to SFX Magazine about what we could expect to see in future installments. Diesel shared…

“You’ve got to go to the Underverse. It’s expected, it’s something I firmly believe. You’ll have to go through the Underverse to get to Furya. So, those are the two further stories that are mapped out. The Underverse is a much more costly venture. We went this direction, trying to do an R-rated movie, which is cool and even more interesting because it’s so unexpected. But yes, you will be at the Underverse and you will be at Furya sooner or later."

RIDDICK is in theaters today and stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Gerard Funk.

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
