Vin Diesel calls Fast 8 "dark & different" and discusses its Oscar chances

Vin Diesel Fast 8 Oscar

Most long-running franchises have had to change things up at some point during their run, for better or for worse, and the FAST & FURIOUS franchise is no exception. Knowing that it needed to evolve or die, the franchise switched gears with FAST FIVE and put an increased emphasis on its ensemble cast, or "family" as Dominic Toretto likes to put it. While undoubtedly still giving us the same hugely entertaining physics defying stunts the franchise is known for, Vin Diesel recently told Entertainment Tonight that the upcoming FAST 8 will once again be quite different to what came before.

Fast 8 is different. It's very very dark. My character is conflicted in a way that is really going to shock you. He's coming off of a lot of emotion from 7 and the loss that 7 represents. It's kind of cold-blooded. It is going to hit you like a ton of bricks. Everything is going to make sense.

With FURIOUS 7 bidding Paul Walker a fond farewell, and giving his character a much deserved happy ending, I'd be curious to find out what event prompts Vin Diesel's character to take such a dark turn. Diesel also praised the work F. Gary Gray has done on FAST 8, even going so far as to suggest that it may indeed be Oscar-worthy and make up for Gray's STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON snub.

As bizarre as that might be, he is definitely going to [be recognized]. As crazy as that might sound, he should have really been acknowledged for Straight Outta Compton.I think he went into making this movie with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder, going "Oh, really? Ok. Now I'm going to take the biggest saga in the world, and I'm about to throw Oscars at you." Wait till you see what he does!

Those with long memories know that this isn't the first time (or last I'd imagine) that Vin Diesel has uttered FAST & FURIOUS and Oscar in the same sentence. Just prior to the release of FURIOUS 7, Diesel predicted that it would take home the Oscar for Best Picture. Obviously it didn't, but you've got to admire his enthusiasm and love for the franchise. FAST 8 is set for a April 14, 2017 release.

I can see where he's coming from, since the saga's reviews have surprisingly improved (it's usually the other way around). That being said, plenty of blockbusters haven't been nominated despite being among the best-reviewed movies of their respective years.

Regardless of its chances, I hope it wins one.

If there was a category for best stunts then yeah Vin, Fast 8 would probably win. Otherwise NO. The only possible categories would be sound design.

Oscars, eh?

Hehehe! I'd like to see the fans of this franchise defend it now after their whole argument was about "We don't watch these movies for their Oscar worthy-ness!" or whatever variation because it seems Vin Diesel now feels he's on Daniel-Day Lewis' level of acting with the whole "dark" & "conflicted" pathos.

Y'know, I can't help but picture F.Gary Gray must have been tenderly stroking Vin's ego like "Whoooze an Oscar winnur, huh? whoooze my widdle bestie Actor? Yeeeahh its yoooouu, Oooh yeeaah

gonna be great, no doubt. if you go back and watch them there actually is a story, and all the actors can act, Find Me Guilty? Oh ya bring it..

I think Diesel's starred in two actually good movies (I like Pitch Black, but I would say it was "cool" but not exactly "good"): Boiler Room and Find Me Guilty, that being said though, I really think Find Me Guilty is one of Lumet's worst films and is more a testament of the director's ability to turn anything into a decent film than to Diesel's ability as a capable actor.

That is a bit deeper then I can go on find me guilty. All I can say is that when they took his recliner chair away I truly felt something. I had bought into the character it was very different than the current Personna. Dude can act..

Shut up

Fast 7 was garbage. I remember when VD said this same crap from that movie, too. I actually enjoyed Fast 6, as it was the perfect amount of fun, action, drama, and ridiculous. Fast 7 was ridiculous, over the top, and terrible. Oh so terrible. Stupid terrible like Kurt Russell pulling out a bucket of Coronas all icy and ahhhhhh such crap.

I'll keep my money at home for Fast 8, thanks...

stop just stop.

I'll admit, 4 and 5 were a nice little resurgence, but 6 and 7 are just complete bullshit almost 3 hours of trash, with no story that goes anywhere or makes any sense. 8 will be no different, and they are just going for the approach of BIGGER MORE BIGGER MORE MORE MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah man, everyone talked up how great 7 was so I finally got around to watching it and it is seriously like the most absolutely generic action movie possible. I know Diesel has a reputation for having a pretty big ego (and surprise, surprise he and Paul Walker actually did not get along AT ALL in real life, in spite of how much Diesel wants to pretend to the media that they were bros) but he is even more delusional than I realized if he thinks that there is any chance of this series ever
