Vince Vaughn comments on 'gay' controversy surrounding The Dilemma

Oct. 15, 2010by: Paul Tassi

THE DILEMMA has been in the news recently for offending gay groups and Anderson Cooper (ahem, separate entities) with the inclusion of a joke in its trailer where Vince Vaughn calls electric cars "gay." But not like, homosexual gay, he explains, rather like "my parents are chaperoning the dance, gay."

Anderson Cooper brought the quote to light on his show, as unfortunately for the film, this was the week CNN decided to report on all the gay teens being bullied to death. Then GLAAD got wind of it, and the studio was forced to recut the trailer, making it less funny than it already was. Which is really saying something.

Now, the actor who uttered the "gay" heard 'round the world is speaking out about it. His advice? Lighten up.

"Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop."

I agree with his point that in order for comedy to work, everything has to be fair game, from race to religion to sexuality. But on the flipside, kids are being taunted with "gay" as an insult mercilessly these days, to the point where many of them have killed themselves. Gay teens have a 4x higher suicide rate than their straight counterparts, and likening their sexuality to an insult is probably not helping things.

What do you think? Are people right to be offended or is this PC-ness gone wild?

While you think it over, here's what Louis CK has to say about the terms "gay" and "faggot."

Extra Tidbit: Gayness aside, anyone else think it's odd that Ron Howard is directing this?

Jesus Christ. America is becoming a bunch of fucking thin skinned pussies. So everytime someone says the word GAY in a negative context, people will shout "What about the people who killed themselves?!?!" Um as awful as those deaths are and as terrible as kids can be to each other, I guarantee those kids had other stuff going to make them snap. I live in the south and I got made fun of constantly for being a yankee, guido, wop, and a mafia-related greasy italian. I put up with it and

I live in the south and I got made fun of constantly for being a yankee, guido, wop, and a mafia-related greasy italian. I put up with it and learned to deal with it. I also got made fun of my accent and my weight. I dealt with it and learned to appreciate myself. My parents also helped me be thick skinned.
Basically, esteem comes from the home. Most of these social problems stems from the home. Stop blaming the media. The last 8 or 9 years gay and lesbian stuff has become much more prevalent on basic cable. I don't like most of it but you don't hear me bitching about seeing two dudes kiss or lesbos make out (i like the latter lol). So all these over sensitive extremists can shove it. Don't use these kids' deaths as a new trendy watercooler phase of beliefs.

If calling something gay is homophobic

then I must be the biggest homophobic in the world, which is weird seeing that one of my best friends is gay, and he must be homophobic too cause he calls things gay more than I do..omg, i think GLAAD is on to something here! /sarcasm

I get why the gay community isn't all that cool, with the use of the word gay as a negative. Having any defining trait about yourself being used as a bad word or insult can be pretty shitty. However, I find it hard to believe that GLAAD is being completely sincere in their actions here. Why? Because this trailer was aired internationally for weeks before anybody complained, and it took outside media attention for them to start sounding the alarms. The whole thing just feels too much like a publicity grab by making a mountain of a molehill.

Another thing to note though, is that as un-funny as the trailer was, it did highlight the fact that language is ever changing and can be very subjective (something South Park did as well.. which was actually funny). If I state the phrase "It's pretty gay in here." when describing a location, there is very little way for anyone to tell my intended meaning without further information. That information could be what the location is, who I am along with my personality and regular behaviour, and even just how I said what I did.

If I say "gay" with a broad smile on my face and make a habit of reading classic novels and drinking tea in parlors you can probably assume that I'm describing the location to be enjoyable.

If I say the phrase completely deadpan after having just walked into an LGBTQIA film festival... I'm probably using the turn to describe the homosexual atmosphere.

And finally, if I'm a fourteen year old boy who enjoys insulting people and generally behaving like a shit most of the time, then I'm probably using the term as an insult.

Personally, I find it more questionable that from both trailers Queen Latifa's character is obviously supposed to be shocking and offensive only because she's a woman who uses sexualized language.

The thing that makes no sense to me about this whole controversy is that Anderson Cooper is attacking Vaughn instead of the writer of the movie.

This joke in this movie was not about "joking about our differences", Short Round. That type of "humor" doesn't include gays. Gays aren't in on that joke. Gay people that use the term that way do so because it is commonly accepted in our society, and seems to be becoming more so. It is a way to fit in...that's what straight people do, they demean gays to make them bend to their own personal beliefs. Not all straights, but people who use the word gay disparagingly should really think about

Political correctness does much more harm than it does good. Pretty soon we're not going to be able to say hello to someone without them getting offended. While we're at it, lets change every time someone says "black" to "African-American", "fat" to "big-boned", "ugly" to "aesthetically challenged", and "handicapped" to "differently-abled". Ugh, who farted, right?

Forcing everyone to be PC pushes us further into repression when we need to be open and honest about our differences, and celebrate them. Like Vaughn says, joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Christ, if we cant do that, then what the hell is the point?

Honestly, there is a difference. Because ugly is ugly. Gay is homosexual. Not stupid. Your argument only works if that word inherently means what you're using it for. "Gay" and "faggy" are explicitly linked to people who like the same sex. So using it to call something stupid is STUPID. Ugly describes UGLY. So using it to describe ugly? That works.

Gay is NOT a synonym for shitty!

I think the offensive part is using "gay" as a synonym for "stupid" or "shitty." Obviously, the homosexual community does not get up in arms over every Cher joke or over Drag Queen comedy. But, if you were to go around and say "That's so BLACK!" (even if you STUPIDLY qualify it as "not the African-American black", knowing it will be associated that way ANYWAY) and mean it as a negative, you best believe African-Americans would be up in arms- and rightfully so.

The idea that the gay community is outraged by "being poked fun at" is completely moronic. They're enraged because you're associating their sexuality with a negative. "That is so gay" is pretty much "That is so lame/stupid/shitty." And that is NOT okay. So, to all of you telling us that comedy should be uncensored, more power to you. Make fun of everyone equally. But do not equate my religion, gender, race, or sexuality with STUPID, LAME, SHITTY, AWFUL, UNCOOL, or the like. THAT is where the problem lies.

But the associations and meanings of words change all the time, don't they? When I say, "Damn that is gay," I don't mean "damn that is stupid, and homosexuality is stupid, therefore, that is homosexual." Same with my boyfriend. And I know lots of gay guys who use that term that way. Not that they represent the community as a whole, but still.

Some words have multiple applications, and not all of them are always related.

kivzirrum, people tried that logic to say that "nigger" only applied to "dirty, homeless black people" instead of all black people. That flies just as well as gay meaning "homosexual" and "shitty" in alternate settings. I don't buy it.

I see your point, but they were still arguing that that word (which I admit I am not quite comfortable using) applied in a racist way. Where as this is being used to describe not the people, but something entirely different.

It's as related, one can say, as the older definition of gay and the homosexual definition. I obviously agree that homosexuality shouldn't be associated with something negative, but I'm not sure that calling something "gay" is making that association. Obviously it began

But for real....

Vince Vaughn did nothing wrong. We were raised to believe that men go with women and vice versa, societies have pressed this belief for almost all of time. Being gay, or "homosexual", goes against the norms of society. So of course, society isn't going to accept that right away. I do believe gays will eventually be accepted and respected, but it's such a touchy subject right now it's ridiculous. Would Vaughn be saying a car is homosexual? No. Most people, in American society at least, know how

You're not 100% accurate on how long homosexuality has existed, which is pretty much since we have recorded histories of society and civilization.

I wholeheartedly agree with the comments about letting comedy be totally free and uncensored. However, I think it's totally ridiculous that people who were never bullied for being gay in high school should comment on things they have never or will ever experience.

Being gay can turn you into one of the loneliest people in school. There is often absolutely no support from friends, teachers, or family. Atleast [link] kids have their problems at the surface level which they can't really hide

Try suppressing the most important aspect of your personality for 12 years of school and then you have a basis to comment on the situation of gay bullying.

Vince Vaughn is a fucking idiot, because regardless of whether he thinks his comment was very intelligent, he should know that it does not translate to the 13-year old boys watching that trailer and continuing to use that slur against kids in school the next day.

Peace!

Yes, because gay people are the only ones who are lonely and find themselves segregated. Not the fat kid, the poor kid, the weirdly pale kid, the kid with burns all over his face, the handicapped kid, the black kid, the arab kid, the mexican kid, the indian kid, the inuit kid, the kid with an amputated limb...yes, no one knows loneliness, despair and rejection like the GLBT community.

The Simpsons

I was watching an episode of The Simpsons set in an amusement park based on Disney world, specifically the World of Tomorrow ride, and this episode made the exact same joke, but in a far more blatant and obvious way. The joke went along the lines of how people will be driving electric cars that will make others perceive them as gay. Three robots dressed in stereotypical homosexual clothing then said "one of us, one of us."

So, The Simpsons make a joke that specifically references homosexuality and relates it to the electric car and I don't remember much outcry, but Vaughn's character refers to electric cars as gay, qualifies it by saying "not homosexual gay" and gets this much attention? Sorry, but this seems ridiculous.

Gay use to be a common expression among teenagers. Often, the same word has different meanings and the word "gay" itself was not originally synonymous with homosexual: it use to mean "happy, cheery." Vaughn's character expressly says "not homosexual gay; 'my parents are chaperoning the school dance' gay." This emphasizes the fact that this use of the word gay has nothing to do with homosexuality; it is the other use common among teenagers. I think GLAAD is taking this a little too far. If

I think we've progressed enough as a society to realize that using the word "gay" as a negative is pretty obnoxious. The word "retarded" as a negative also needs to go. Rather than hold on to these usages, why can't we be sophisticated enough to realize it isn't cool to talk like this. Sure, I understand the argument that the words themselves are not meant to slander anyone but how did we go about using these words like this in the first place. Why do "gay" and "retarded" have to be used in

There are many words in the dictionary and thesaurus to more eloquently express yourself. It would be far more beneficial to society if people read those books rather than holding on to offensive terms.

Oh PC groups - they'll do anything for attention.

Ask anyone who isn't a complete and total moron - gay as in enjoying members of the same sex is a completely different thing than being an annoying faggy asshole. Which it seems, from my understanding of what is said in the trailer, is a differentiation even made here.

It's amazing that people can still be outraged and retarded after having something simple spelled out for them.

Wow. "annoying faggy asshole." JoBlo, can we get a response here? This language isn't acceptable.

Fuck this, I hereby reclaim the word "gay" to mean "light-hearted, cheerful, merry". There's clearly nothing gay about the "gay" people who complain about this kind of petty shit.

Gay

Message to Gays, if you are offended just don't go to the movie. As far as the kids being bullied, Most kids are bullied I am sure most of the people reading this were bullied for one reason or another. I don't see them starting campaigns to stop the bullying of fat kids or gingers.

Vince Vaughn is 100% right. This is ridiculous how out of control this situation has gotten. It's a joke in a comedy movie that you don't have to see if you will be offended. I mean, for god's sake he is calling energy cars gay. He's not bashing the gay community by any stretch. I mean.. my god, if everyone acted like this over some minute comment then the world would be a pretty shitty place to live in.

Come to think of it.. it seems that's the direction we've been heading in the past

Look it sucks and is tragic that kids are being bullied at school for being gay then they feel nothing else but to kill themselves. I feel for those people and wish that more had been done, but I think connecting the recent suicides to this movie is kind of "stretching it". So Vaughn is right here by what he is saying.

What about unattractive people? I'm sure they could be upset by words. Should we remove the word "ugly" from films? What about folks who are larger than your average person? Should we ban the words "fat" and "obese" from films? Like he said, where do you stop?

context

to me, it seemed like characterization when the character said that. He said "electric cars are gay" which is something a tall a-hole sales guy might say. To me it just shows us who the character is. He is not a [link] is a [link]

Talk about fighting the wrong battle. GLADD and Cooper need to pull their heads out of their asses. It's called a movie, and sometimes movies have content some may consider offensive. Fact of fucking life. Deal with it.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. What if Vaughn's character is a "jerk" in the movie and part of his persona is that he denigrates others? Isn't anyone allowed to say anything in MOVIES anymore? It's a MOVIE!! He's playing a CHARACTER!

It's a character, yes, but you have to look at the context. Calling someone or something gay in a negative context, even in a movie is wrong. The racial example is the best one to equate to this scenario. Decent people don't bring racially charged language into everyday conversation. Why should people feel rejected as something bad because of some supposedly casual use of the term?

Every group wants their own version of the N word so they can spaz out and think it'll lead to a hand out too.

Gay is not equal to the N word, idiot. Gay is the common term for that type of person. That's like calling something straight, like being straight is a bad thing.

I know there are some words which I won't write up here that just don't need to be used because they're so divisive (and often racist). But even the word "gay," it's next to impossible to cut that out of your vocabulary, if only due to its old English origin. Not that anyone uses it that way. Not saying people use it that way anymore, but even when referring to gays, that's not even derogatory. And shoot, it points out the difference in pop culture between the technical term, and the common use

Whatever, there's more important things to worry about, and all due respect to Mr. Cooper, he should know that better than anyone.

What a bunch of crybabies.

It's so frieking lame how every group out there cries about something so stupid & trivial. I've been using the "G" word since Junior High. I never use the word gay except to say something blows. If people need to have explained to them, "South Park" did an episode about the Harley riders calling them gay as in Lame. It's a great episode & it explains how people use the word now-a-days. It's just like how gay used to describe happiness in the 50's.

your rationalization is absolutely ridiculous. how did the word gay start being used as meaning something negative? that's the point here. Calling something gay means that they blow? Okay that makes a lot of sense.

Too up tight...

People are just way too up tight and just itching for something to shout at these days. It's a common trait that won't lead to anything positive in the future. People need to lighten up.

I agree with Vince that when it comes to comedy, there are no borders and that you need to have an open mind when it comes to some things.
