VSDA Round-Up

08.02.2003

Along with our annual SAN DIEGO COMIC CON report, we also take the opportunity of being on the West Coast to meet and greet many of the studio folk who we email/talk to on the phone during the rest of the year. The Annual VSDA (Video Software Dealers Association) convention in Las Vegas was the perfect spot to hobnob with those people, as well as a great place to get information about upcoming DVD releases, touch base with new contacts (we need your feedback as well: would you like us to review more anime or foreign titles? let us know, by emailing me here) and, of course...to party. This year's event was as well organized as ever (thanks Andrew!), with plenty of exhibitors lined up on 3 different floors of the Venetian Hotel, as well as plenty of social get-togethers to mingle, etc... Officially, the byline on the VSDA is "the trade show for the home video industry". Below are a couple of the folks we met, as well as the winners of the 2003 HOME ENTERTAINMENT & DVD TECHNICAL AWARDS (for which, LOTR was the big winner...again).

MEETING KEVIN SMITH

My personal highlight of the event was finally meeting one of my greater inspirations, Kevin Smith. I'd corresponded with Kevin over the years, and even met him briefly at the San Diego Con a couple of years ago, but this was the first face-to-face conversation type of meeting and as expected, the man was as cool as you would expect. He had graciously accepted to write the foreword to my first book last year (CHECK OUT THE BOOK HERE), so when I went to shake his hand, I said, "Hi, I'm Berge...JoBlo. You wrote the foreword to my book last year." Pretty surreal. Anyhoo, he seemed very happy to finally meet me too and mentioned how he enjoyed our Con coverage and even busted my balls about the fact that I apparently had said that I enjoyed Tarantino's panel more than his...hehehe. Yes, he's still a fanboy at heart.

He also mentioned how he'd been on our site just that very morning (for those who don't know, Kevin is a very big onliner) and how he was checking out his good buddy Ben Affleck's latest trailer PAYCHECK on our MOVIE TRAILERS ARCHIVES. Anyway, I don't want to bore you all too much with my personal affairs, but all that to say that he also signed something very cool thing in my notebook, and hugged me for the pic above (notice how you can't see my right hand cause I was grabbing his ass!! :) But even more importantly, you may be asking...why was Kevin at this event? Well, I'm glad you asked. He, along with creator John Pierson (whom we also spoke to...cool dude and stay tuned for an upcoming documentary by HOOP DREAMS' director Steve James about the one year that John spent in Fiji, etc...), was there to highlight the upcoming release of the BEST OF the Independent Film Channel's SPLIT SCREEN TV series, of which Kevin was a pretty big part.

Kevin spoke about how much he enjoyed taking part in that show, and how the collected series of episodes are likely to be a hoot. For those who don't know, SPLIT SCREEN featured known personalities, and yet-to-discovered talent, engaging in a wide variety of film projects, including Smith hanging out at the CLERKS Quick Stop, Christopher Walken's little known talents in the kitchen, Edward Norton and Matt Damon beating a world champion poker player, film classics overcoming censorship, an archaeological dig for a lost movie set and much more. Stay tuned for this Collectable Box Set hitting stores on October 21, 2003.

MEETING LARRY CLARK

Many of you might know that I've personally enjoyed a couple of director Larry Clark's creations like KIDS and BULLY (although I do think that he seems like a pretty perverted person), while the Arrow wants nothing more out of life but to see the day that this man get arrested for his extremely distasteful obsession with young sexualized kids in all of his movies (read the Arrow's review of Clark's TEENAGE CAVEMAN here), but we both put our "journalist" caps on this day and decided to go get some info about his upcoming movie, KEN PARK, in a suite in the Venetian Resort Hotel. We walked into the room and noticed Mr. Clark sitting in the back room signing a KEN PARK poster (ugh...what a lame, boring "let's try to shock" poster, btw), and decided that we really didn't want much to do with him and would rather just get some info about the film. We proceeded to ask the folks in the suite for said film info or a screener, but not much was there for the taking. We then walked out...better men for the experience.

MEETING GAUGE

Yeah okay, the VSDA convention is also known for having a couple of the more "adult" entertainers in town, and even though we missed one Jenna Jameson last year, it was nice to drop by one of the Casino's suites and find one "Gauge", movie "actress" extraordinaire standing around in her high heels (she's actually a tiny 4'11), enjoying a beer and allowing us to put our grubby hands all over her (see pics below). Note the Arrow's personal message to director Larry Clark and the shot of Ron Jeremy in the monitor behind him. For any guy out there who doesn't know who Gauge is...gimme a break, dude...you lie!!!
