Wanted director Timor Bekmambetov wants to remake Timor Bekmambetov’s Black Lightning

If you wondered what director Timur Bekmambetov has been doing after 2008’s (besides attaching himself to a dozen Hollywood projects), he’s been busy producing a Russian action-fantasy called BLACK LIGHTNING.

And now Bekmambetov wants to adapt the movie for American audiences, and direct it himself. Bekmambetov is talking with Universal about making a US version of the movie, about a college student who buys a used car that turns out to be an Autobot have magical powers, turning the kid into a protector of his city.

BLACK LIGHTNING (not about the DC superhero, sadly) was a hit when released last December in Mother Russia, where Bekmambetov has previous success with FX-filled movies NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH.

Bekmambetov (yes, I’m copy/pasting it) is also producing an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s best-seller “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, and an alien invasion flick called THE DARKEST HOUR, which is using his own Moscow facilities for the production.

A taste of BLACK LIGHTNING:
