Warner Bros. actively pursuing a reboot of Gremlins…again

Yes, the never-ending cycle of stops and starts on the GREMLINS franchise continues.  According to Vulture, Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment to kickstart a new iteration of GREMLINS, the 1984 classic starring Zack Galligan and Phoebe Cates.  And Gizmo.  And about a thousand devilish green monsters. The film also spawned a sequel, GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, which was just as fun as the first one, in my humble opinion.

Apparently, the one thing holding up progress on GREMLINS is Spielberg, whose deal always seems to clog the drain.  Sources say prospects look good, but don’t put all your chips on the little green creatures just yet.  No word on any talent involved, but I think it’s safe to say that the most you’d see from anyone in the prior films is a cameo at best.

I love the GREMLINS films.  From mogwai’s to gremlins, the creatures are adorable, hilarous, and downright homicidal maniacs, much like a group of live-action Looney Tunes characters.  I’m not opposed to a reboot, I guess, but the notion of CGI Gremlins just kills the prospects of another one.  You know that it will be 3D, and really, that’s fine, but if it moves forward as a CGI kiddie-fest then I think it’s safe to say the franchise is dead.  However, that’s all speculation on my part.  There’s always the possibility that WB could have something really great up their sleeves that pays homage to the classic original and builds upon it for modern audiences.

Riiiiiight.

More as this develops. If it ever does.
