Warner Bros. actively pursuing a reboot of Gremlins...again

Jan. 17, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Yes, the never-ending cycle of stops and starts on the GREMLINS franchise continues. According to Vulture, Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment to kickstart a new iteration of GREMLINS, the 1984 classic starring Zack Galligan and Phoebe Cates. And Gizmo. And about a thousand devilish green monsters. The film also spawned a sequel, GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, which was just as fun as the first one, in my humble opinion.

Apparently, the one thing holding up progress on GREMLINS is Spielberg, whose deal always seems to clog the drain. Sources say prospects look good, but don't put all your chips on the little green creatures just yet. No word on any talent involved, but I think it's safe to say that the most you'd see from anyone in the prior films is a cameo at best.

I love the GREMLINS films. From mogwai's to gremlins, the creatures are adorable, hilarous, and downright homicidal maniacs, much like a group of live-action Looney Tunes characters. I'm not opposed to a reboot, I guess, but the notion of CGI Gremlins just kills the prospects of another one. You know that it will be 3D, and really, that's fine, but if it moves forward as a CGI kiddie-fest then I think it's safe to say the franchise is dead. However, that's all speculation on my part. There's always the possibility that WB could have something really great up their sleeves that pays homage to the classic original and builds upon it for modern audiences.

Riiiiiight.

More as this develops. If it ever does.

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see a Gremlins 3 or are you down for a reboot?

Might as well...

They already raped most classics i love. Why stop now?
But PLEASE NO CGI GREMLINS! We don't need a Alvin & the Chipmunks version of this.

I'm hoping Spielberg doesn't give in. Gremlins is a film that is very dear to me, and the idea of it being remade with CGI monsters really bugs me.

I'll echo what everyone else has said and hope they'll stick to animatronics and puppets...but we're pretty much guaranteed full-CGI gremlins if the reboot goes through. I fear it might have a Alvin and the Chipmunks tone to it, though it is too early to say. Don't feed a franchise after midnight?

hmm... I guess a reboot is fine, but I'd rather see a third with the entire cast back. Yeah just don't make them completely CGI!

I'll see it if it has Joe Dante directing.

Don't pour water on the Gremlins!

come on!! I thought reboots were for bad movies. Gremlins is an 80's classic....why cant they make a sequel? I dont see why good movies of the past are always subject of reboots...aghh.

I would prefer they continue the story and keep the designs similar and puppets. CGI is being so overused when it shouldn't have to be used. Unless drastic changes are made to Gizmo and Gremlins, reboot it. If they are keeping the same style but with better puppet technology improvements, Gremlins 3.

I say get Guillermo del Toro on board and do a remake with some new gremlin types thrown into the mix. That could make for an interesting mix.

Gremlins 3 is a go for me!

I'm all for Gremlins 3, but for God sakes make it like the previous two films. People are still attracted to these style of films.

I LOVE the Gremlins movies. I would have loved to have seen a third one with the original characters returning, but since that may not happen now because of the reboot, then I say hopefully this reboot is good and NOT done in cgi. And hopefully they don't make it kiddish.

The first two (especially the first) was a great example of mixing horror, suspense, and comedy all into one film.

Gremlins 3 instead

Because I know the redesigns for the characters wouldn't sit well with me. Gizmo just looks perfect in the form he already is to me.
