Warner Bros. CEO says DC films are "edgier" than Marvel films

03.04.2015

It’s the age old question; Marvel vs. DC.  Much like Pepsi vs. Coke, this one has been a topic for debate since the two comic publishers were young. You bring that up to someone on the street and by golly, them's fighting words.

When it comes to the world of superhero films Marvel has been the clear winner…so far. Now that DC has finally got their shit together, they’ll looking to give Marvel a taste of their own medicine with an impressive and lengthy slate of upcoming films. With both companies looking to produce at least two films a year for the foreseeable future, the question has been raised whether the public will still have an appetite for superheroes in the years to come. Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara thinks they will.

“The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks very different …you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters.”

He followed that up by comparing DC films to Marvel’s.

“The worlds of DC are very different, they’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies.”

Perhaps he's feeling a little intimidated following today's release of that great AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON trailer.

I’d disagree with his assertion that making something “edgier” somehow makes it more “real” as many folks enjoy the Marvel films because they aren’t “steeped in realism”. They offer an escape and represent the comic stories of their youth come to life. That’s not to say DC’s take is the wrong one, there’s definitely a place for darker and grittier superheroes and I’m glad these two universes will hopefully remain distinct.

Next up for Marvel is AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 1, 2015 followed by ANT-MAN on July 17, 2015 with DC's next entry coming in the form of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE on March 25, 2016.

Now, the big question...whose film's are you looking forward to most?

I've never been one who has bought into the whole DC vs Marvel thing. I enjoy both & have no preference of one over the other. As far as the movies Marvel is clearly well ahead of DC because of the MCU & maybe it inspired DC to do the same & can you blame them really? As long as the movies are good for us movie fans regardless of the comic brand.

The worlds of DC are very different they are steeped in realism. Huh? Because every thing that happened in Man of Steel was so realistic? Way more so than a rich billionaire creating a metal armored super-suit? Stupid comment. It is Superman for crying out loud he should be fun to the point of campy. However, I am a fan of both DC and Marvel and I am just glad we have the opportunity to see films like these made. I do enjoy more what Marvel is doing though, because I was always more partial to

I do enjoy more what Marvel is doing though, because I was always more partial to Captain America and Spider-Man and the Hulk growing up. Plus I find myself visiting their films more often because they are fun and my boys, who sadly get bored with the films of DC, prefer them as well. Even my youngest son who prefers DC to Marvel would rather watch their films, of course he is still upset they screwed up his favorite hero; Hal Jordan's Green Lantern. So I can't blame him there.

I don't know if there's a bull big enough for the shit I'm not giving

"edgier", "grittier", "steeped in realism". These are terms I don't consider a requirement for a comic-themed movie to be GOOD. Plus, Superman, WW, and many of DC's troupe don't NEED that; it needs more fun and less "edge".

Dark Knight was steeped in realism...edgey...etc

...and they've been trying to clone its success since. They fumbled royally on Superman (they could've adapted the Superman For All Seasons construct but instead made a very un-super Kryptonian character study so far detached form the original it lacked a soul, something Supes needs). Green Lantern was not 'edgey' or 'realistic'...and um...wait...Superman Returns...no....am I missing something? Oh riiiight....Superman v Batman...gonna be super realistic, edgey, emo, everyone is gonna be down trodden and upset...no [link] Lex....I get it. In other words, its all dark with no side of sunshine. Got it.

Oh WB, you will NEVER frakking get it.

First off, who cares? Edgy doesn't mean better, numb nuts. Secondly, DC is steeped more in realism? LMFAO, that's part of the goddamn problem you idiot. Read some comics and then talk realism to me. Comic wise, I would argue Marvel is way more steeped in reality than DC. Movie wise, okay, your RECENT movies might be more "steeped" in realism but that's not a good thing. And actually when we turn our heads to Green Lantern and many other DC projects that have come and gone over the years

And actually when we turn our heads to Green Lantern and many other DC projects that have come and gone over the years (Catwoman, Steel, two failed Superman franchises, one failed Batman franchise, etc.) this notion goes completely out the window. If you're talking about Man of Steel I think most would agree that the problem with Man of Steel was that it tried to be too realistic. Because that's what we want right? Darkness and reality from a guy who wears a cape and flies, while grinning as he helps a little girl get her cat out of a tree. Frakking morons. Rant over. I just really hate Warner Bros.

I agree with Draco, most comic fans will go see the films from both companies. Edgier doesn't mean "better". They should just focus on making good movies and the people will be there filling those theatre seats.

DC/WB is just grasping at straws. They shouldn't be comparing themselves to Marvel yet. Marvel is 8 years into this game with a proven product. DC is showing up way too late to the game and their first outing had very mixed reviews (MoS). So right now, instead of getting the PR machine rolling on how much better DC is than Marvel, they should be focusing on putting out 1 high quality product to contend with Marvel.

Even though Nolan's Batman films did great - they really brought the franchise down in the end. Most Batman fans go back and watch the Tim Burton versions where they were dark and took place in a comic book world. Nolan's idea of Batman was to just make a couple drama films but throw Batman in there to call it Dark Knight. WB should never have approved that shit. So, as much as I hate to say it (since I really can't stand most Marvel films) ... Marvel has done a better job so far.

So far, Marvel has done a better job on screen of putting everything together and doing each of their characters justice, but I'd like to see DC improve and do the same. The Dark Knight franchise was amazing, but we'd all agree that was more thanks to Nolan than WB. I'd disagree that DC films are more realistic tho. Marvel may be a tad more candy coated but that's not a bad thing... at the end of the day these are SUPERHERO films. Allow yourself to have some fun... even TDK does that a little

I thought "edgy" as a buzzword was passe in 1995

More "edgy" doesn't mean more entertaining, as I think Marvel has conclusively demonstrated so far. And that's been the crux of the Marvel vs. DC argument: which studio has produced a product that more audiences want to see. MoS was a good start, but I still give the edge to Marvel with their movies.

TV shows, it's a closer call but I think Marvel's method of linking their moves and TV shows (giving some episodes bigger "event" status) will give it the edge here too.

I found nothing wrong with what he said, in fact I think there is truth to it. Doesn't mean one is better than the other however, Marvel definitely has great leadership who devised a plan long ago and are still reaping the benefits. DC's only hope is that their plan to mimic Marvel has a different feel to it, that starts with Batman v Superman. If they don't nail that out of the park, then they are in BIG trouble.

I think 'edgier' is, perhaps, the wrong word, but I do think he has a point- the DC movieverse and Marvel movieverse are approaching their takes from two very different areas, thus feel and look different. Provided the movies are good, I don't see why the two can't co-exist.

For the record, I enjoyed "Man Of Steel", despite its flaws.

WTF with all the realism and reality grounded?? If I want reality I watch a documentary. These are movies.
I do not want reality!!
I want to see: glasses that self destruct, bullets that curb , guy who falls from helicopter and survives, a human that fights The Kraken, cars that fly from one building to another and so one...........

Marvel is light years ahead of DC in regards to their films and I don't think its going to get better with Spider-Man returning home. If Man of Steel is any indication of how their future films are going to be then it is disappointing. Characters like Superman and especially The Flash shouldn't be edgy and/or depressing.

There's more than one way to create the cinematic universe for comicbook properties - from what we've seen so far DC's films do feel different to Marvel's and are probably a bit edgier. Frankly I want the Marvel and DC movies to be as different and distinct from eachother as possible. It's not like the Marvel films are perfect or anything - you don't have to be a big fan of DC to appreciate that - but yes they have a head start and as long as their films don't get too vanilla or repetitive

I have no allegiance one way or the other between Marvel and DC, but I'm reading more DC titles at the moment because for me they have more interesting stuff going on right now. The Marvel NOW reboot did very little for me, so hopefully the upcoming Secret Wars event will shake things up again.

Well aren't they the cool kids?

If MOS was an indication of being edgy than no thanks. Marvel takes a tonal stance on what fits right with the character, don't just be edgy for the sake of it DC, you've got a great wealth of material to use so do it justice (no pun intended).

1. I don't know if that's true. I mean, are they counting all of Bale's Batman movies? Every DC flick ever? 2. Even if that's true, it's not like it makes their stuff better. Iron Man 1 doesn't need to be described as "edgy." Nor does GOTG and more. Another problem with WB/DC here. They think that just Bc its edgy, it's good, instead of going character by character and saying this character is edgy, this one is silly.

A bit foolish to say something like that so soon after the Green Lantern fiasco maybe? But he does have a point with the tone Nolan and Snyder have used. Not sure if edgier is the right word, its more of a greek mythology way of telling superhero tales. Dramatic epic tales of modern day gods. Different is good, no variety would be boring.

WB/DC should be more focused on being true to their characters than being the "Edgy dark superhero company". Seriously, the one superhero that should never be edgy is Superman. But DC has zero confidence in their properties, and are twisting all of their character to fit into a certain fad. They want all their heroes to be Batman, and they are trying too desperately hard to one up Marvel.

I'm more of a DC guy then Marvel, but Marvel has done things and are still doing things that I can only hope DC achieves one day.

What Marvel has done since the first Iron Man is just astounding in how the storyline has evolved into something so much more and how the Marvel Universe has expanded into a much bigger, grand scope.

Like I said before; I would love to see DC finally get their stuff together and give Marvel at least a little run for their money in some areas. Man of Steel was

Also, I you say I don't even debate his points? Really? WOW I thought I established a movie laying timeline that shows that we should wait to see what DC puts forth with Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman before comparing Marvel to DC because I point out that it took 2 full years before the MCU even HAD an actual approrpiate sequel.

Further, I genuinely have never called Soloist, Faggot, asshole or anything as I have no tolerance for such hatred and bigotry. I may have claimed his comments or opinions to be stupid, however, He and I have debated with a mutual respect over the last few weeks and I have clearly supported him when people (like the nameless post) have called him a "faggot" or any sort of HATE BASED SPEECH. So before you goa head and call me a JOKE!!! Maybe you are the one who should take a break from this website and take a look at yourself.

Have a nice day

"The worlds of DC are very different, they’re steeped in realism"

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara is an idiot for saying that...Besides Nolan's Batman trilogy, he is so very wrong.

Come on

Right now, this isn't even a competition. Marvel is years ahead of DC. They've executed a sophisticated, interconnected film universe in a way that has never been done before and have made billions of dollars and garnered considerable critical acclaim while doing so. DC is riding Marvel's coattails and throwing crap against a wall to see what sticks.

Marvel characters are a lot more relatable, and they balance being serious and light hearted. DC is typically darker to the point of being a drama.

Why can't we all just get along? On the other hand, if it makes the studios roll out more superhero movies I'm all for friendly banter.

All the DC haters will still give WB they're money to line up with everyone else to see these movies. Then they'll pretend to still hate them, just so they still have something to troll over! WB doesn't give a shit about what u think, they want yer money! Plain and simple! And u trolls will pay
