Warner Bros developing an animated feature version of The Jetsons

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

A couple of years ago, we heard the batshit crazy story that Kanye West was going to be involved in developing a movie based on THE JETSONS. While we have not heard much more on that insanity, we now know that Warner Bros is moving forward with an adaptation of the classic animated sitcom.

Deadline reports that Matt Lieberman has been brought in to develop the script for THE JETSONS. Lieberman has been a hot writer lately having sold screenplays for a found footage Santa Claus movie called 12/24, the SHORT CIRCUIT remake, an animated film called GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN, Jared Hess' THE PET at Disney, MR. TOAD'S WILD RIDE, and a project called EVIL GENIUS.

THE JETSONS, for those of you young people, was the scifi equivalent of the stone aged THE FLINTSTONES. The Hanna-Barbera sitcom aired for three seasons in the 1960s followed by a feature film. While THE FLINTSTONES has been in development as a new TV series from Seth MacFarlane, Warner Bros seems confident that THE JETSONS would be a good fit for theaters. Hopefully it will fare better than DreamWorks' MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN which was good but didn't set the box office ablaze.

THE JETSONS currently has no director or projected release date, but expect to hear more in the near future.
