Warner Bros. hires Brad Peyton to write and direct DC comics' Lobo

Apr. 20, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Warner Bros. has tapped Brad Peyton, hot off JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, to write and direct an adaptation of DC Comics favorite "bastich" LOBO. The character is an intergalactic bounty hunter/mercenary that serves as a space-travelling Wolverine for DC, sans the claws. Created by Keith Giffen and best known for his likeness as drawn by Simon Bisley, LOBO has been a highly recognized character since the '90's, although hasn't held a monthly comic in a long while (although he pops up in guest appearances regularly).

Details are sparse as the deal was just announced, but lest we forget that Guy Ritchie was attached to project for a while (and, truly, would've been a badass director for the character), but left the project to do more Sherlock Holmes. With Peyton, it's hard to guage what direction he'll go with the property. One would hope for an R-rated extravagance, but it's not realistic. However, I think LOBO can be pulled off with a PG-13, even if I prefer an R.

I don't even care about any casting rumors, because in my mind there's only one man to play the role: Jason Mamoa. That's right, Kahl Drogo himself. Mamoa may not have made the best Conan, but he showed some true ferocity on Game of Thrones and you throw some white paint on him and you got yourself a LOBO.

One of my favorite LOBO stories is the Paramilitary Christmas Special, which was adapted into a short film as an AFI student film project.  Take a look below and stay tuned for more info as the project develops.

Extra Tidbit: Lobo vs. Wolverine. Wolverine wins. Disagree?

Slightly apprehensive about this, to be honest, there's not a snow balls chance that they'll allow him to be "bad ass" enough. It'll be PG 13 and suck!

Wolverine already beat Lobo in the crossover so that answers that question. As for who should play Lobo, he may be to old and out of shape but all I see is Lemmy from Motorhead on that comic cover.

I read this as "Warner Bros. hires Brad BIRD to write and direct DC comics' Lobo" and I was like "WHAT?!"

Too bad, as that would have made my interest for this movie (which is currently non-existent) substantial.

I think that...

Lobo is awesome, but who is he gonna fight? Lobo, an inter-galactic badass is cool, bit lets face it, he's so bad ass that the only real enemy he could go toe to toe with is Superman, and good ole Kent will be in his own movie fightin Zod. Should have made him the villain in Superman and started to push for a JLU flick.

LOBO should be CGI

im my opinion, he should be completely and totally 100% CGI, there is NO actor that could portray LOBO on screen outside of a CGI mo-cap performance that can capture 100% genocidal psychopathic frag-tastic bombastic LOBO has to be 100% CGI... no other way this would work.
Not concerned about the rating, there usually is not sex or nudity or drug use in LOBO, thats usually what nails a hard R... NOT violence. Plenty of oober-violent movies get PG-13 rating.

Guy Ritchie was probably going to make it pg 13 himself. I think it could work, if they indicate the mayhem that goes, they don't need to show all the disembowelment in close up. What's important is a badass story and lots of integalactic action.

More than the size of Momoa, what Lobo needs is an actor that can do a totally owerpowering and insane personality, like Bardem did in Perdita Durango. The Comidian guy from Watchmen maybe.

Hellboy in Space. Get a real actor to play him like Jeff Bridges or Forrest Whitaker.

Ditto the idea of him being a Superman baddie. Half Han Solo half Boba Fett. First act enemy, third act ally of Superman as they tangle with Darkseid or Brainiac.

Incidentally, the Lobo arc were my favorite episodes of Superman: The Animated Series.

Really?!?!

This scares the shit out of me. They're going to take one of the biggest bad asses in the DCU and turn him into a PG-13 pussy???

"I think it can be done as a PG13"??? WTF are you talking about? theres enough carnage for a hard R on most of LOBOs covers!

I agree with petey. Uh, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance", anyone? Lobo needs to be out-and-out unhinged, completely crazy and a sensory meltdown. Think Machete in space.

With this guy directing this....

its going to be terrible.

My favorite storyline was "The Last Czarian", pity Matthew Vaugh isn't doing an adaptation of that mini-series.

FUCK Warner Bros...

Hiring a no talent hack, who can't even write a decent kids movie, to pen a movie about a genocidal psycho. I smell a shitfest worse than the first Ghost Rider.

I said it before and I will say it again, Lobo should of been the antagonist in SuperMan. He's not really the anti-hero/wolvie type. He's more of a villain who doesn't want world domination, just money/chicks/booze. He wouldn't think twice about killing. That is not Wolvie. I don't see a starring vehicle working for him, especially if it was pg13.

Fuck this. Lobo is NOT PG-13!!!

This is a character that murdered his entire race while playing guitar because he was bored. He ripped the heads off of angels for no real reason. He was kicked out of hell for being too violent. Dismembering people is his good times. Blood, gore, violence, sex, nudity, & blashphamy are what define Lobo. He is a mix of Alex from 'A Clockwork Orange' & Kurgan from 'Highlander'. He isn't an anti-hero, he is anti-everything.

So you're saying the director of Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ISN'T a good hire?

Was going to post the same thing. I remember buy issue 1 when it was first published and was shocked at the violence. Definitely not even close to pg-13.
