Warner Bros. is trying to fast-track Man of Steel 2 for 2014, Justice League may still be happening in 2015

Jun. 17, 2013by:

With a very impressive opening weekend and an already confirmed sequel, there shouldn't be too many surprises regarding MAN OF STEEL 2. But, how soon can Warner Bros. get the sequel to their hit Superman movie in theaters? How about next year?

The Wall Street Journal, citing "knowledgeable people close to the studio", claims that WB is looking to fast-track MAN OF STEEL 2 for 2014 and plans are back on for JUSTICE LEAGUE to hit screens in 2015. WB was previously holding onto all future plans for their DC cinematic endeavors until they saw how MAN OF STEEL performed, and it looks like they got the answer they wanted.

I find it hard to believe that there have been no plans on developing DC films this entire time. The smart move would have been to get all of their ducks in a row so they only had to sign the contracts to get things moving. On the other hand, Henry Cavill recently signed up to replace Tom Cruise in Guy Ritchie's THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. which would begin filming this year. I am sure his Superman contract would pull him out of that film, but then the question becomes whether or not a quality MAN OF STEEL sequel can happen in such a short amount of time.

More realistically, I would expect a MAN OF STEEL sequel no sooner than 2015 with possible filming happening concurrently on JUSTICE LEAGUE. Even that would require a lot to be done in a short amount of time. Depending on what happens, we may be hearing a lot of major DC announcements in very short order. We will let you know as soon as anything develops.

Extra Tidbit: Despite a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, MAN OF STEEL has an A- CinemaScore. Which do you agree with?

I agree with Cinescore. I'd love to see a sequel as soon as possible, but it just seems that anytime a sequel gets fast tracked it isn't as good. Not sure if that is WHY they aren't as good, or if it just works out that way, but it is worrisome.

CinemaScore is complete bullshit

Other films that got an A from CinemaScore:
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (A)
Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 (A-)
Alvin & the Chipmunks 2 (A)
Tyler Perry's Temptation (A-)
Mr. Popper's Penguins (A-)

I thought 'Man of Steel' was damn good, so I'm ok with this news. I'd rather a 'Worlds Finest' movie over Justice League in 2015, but I'll take what I can get. Either way, this is good news.

I would rather see DC take their time and give us a Man of Steel 2 in 2015. DC finally has what they want...an origins film to start setting up the DC Universe and Justice League (same thing Iron Man 1 did for Marvel and the Avenger Universe). I would hate for them to give us a mediocre sequel to a fantastic first/origins film.

I don't understand why they couldn't give us a Flash origins film or Green Lantern 2 in the meantime while they develop a sequel to Man of Steel.

'Man of Steel 2' won't be coming until December 2014, not summer 2014. This gives Warner Brothers a decent bit of time to produce the next Superman movie. Eighteen months for "fast track" a sequel is more than enough time.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHA Damn funny comment sir! I liked MoS but the story was an absolute mess. I literally came up with a much better structure for it after thinking about it for 10 minutes, not even. This movie could have been much more effective if it only went through a few more rewrites (from someone else than Goyer)

Lets all just calm down...

Man of Steel was good. I enjoyed it. It brought new life and some cool new ideals and storyline to Supes' mythos. Lets not F this up and and make MOS2 in under a year. 2 years, sure. Why does it seem DC/Warner Bros. has absolutely no idea what to do? It's as if this is their first movie they ever made. Calm down. Build a strategy. DC, you have WAY better characters than Marvel, yet Marvel figured it out. DC could get a dozen scrooge mcduck money bins if they do this right. Start now,

I'd wait for a quality product.

Ducks in a row is right!

Jesus, the WB has to be the most incompetent movie studio around. I mean, sure they finally got a decent Batman franchise and Superman movie under their belt, but over the years it's been train wreck after train wreck. So yeah, they should've gotten their ducks in a row. They need to get someone involved who either loves DC Comics or is already involved with DC Comics. Someone to oversee everything like what Marvel's doing with Joss Whedon a la the Godfather. Someone who can make decisive

I mean they already royally screwed the pooch by casting Reynolds as GL INSTEAD of making the most OBVIOUS choice of all-time by having him play the Flash. Ugh. Now I'm just venting.

Yes, fast-track MOS 2 (but don't call it that) but get your goddamn ducks in a row.

Don't Rush Warner Brothers

I think they should carefully prepared their DC plans. They should not hurry for Man of Steel sequel to be release 2014. First make Man of Steel sequel to be release 2015 and please give us Doosmday , or Braniac.. In the Man of steel sequel at the end ,introduce us the new Batman who comes to meet Superman for very important reason. In 2017 we have Superman vs Batman movie. Here we can have other cameos like Flash or Wonder Woman. And in 2020 we have Justice League.

That had to be a typo, or WB is out of their fucking minds. 2015 maybe, but 2014? You can't get a up-to-snuff sequel to high-budget superhero movie sequel developed in one year, unless it was planned from the get-go.

If they've been working on the story since MOS wrapped it could be possible-I mean it's been probably a year since they finished shooting. But if they're starting from scratch, there's no way this gets done in time.

I would hate to turn in to that guy whose ID was an e-mail address...and go on about my issues with Man of Steel like he did with Iron Man 3...so I won't go on making points I've already done in previous posts...but either WB's were f-ing with us all along about their concerns that this movie might not be a success in which case a JL movie would not happen...and had in fact set up a concrete plan as to what was going to happen with their DC cinematic universe - in which case - great - bring it

Or more likely and has been my biggest issues with them - a lack of coherent thinking / long term outlook - they wet themselves as soon as they saw the box office numbers and said f*ck it - strike while the iron's hot - lets do what Marvel did in a few years - far quicker. If it's the latter - I have a very dark foreboding as to how successful they're going to be.

Green Lantern sucked, the Dark Knight Rises killed any chance of that universe being part of this universe (Man of Steel was very much of the same tone - absolutely no reason Nolan's Batman could not have been part of this world!) and Man of Steel had issues that bothered me straight off (some times you see a great movie and it remains that way in your head afterwards - sometimes you enjoy a movie loads...but then later when you think about it - there are issues that do bother you about it - Iron Man 3 - sometimes you see a movie you're stoked up to see but points come up while you're watching it that prevent you from enjoying it - Man of Steel). Now with the latest development, have to say I'm very neutral on the matter.

I'm all for a DC Cinematic Universe and want to see DC's greatest heroes on screen kicking ass together as much as anyone, but it doesn't sound like WB has a solid plan at this point the way Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel carefully plotted out where the Marvel Cinematic Universe would go. I hope it comes to fruition, but I'm guessing next year is way too fast for MoS 2.

I seriously doubt it'll pan out in that time. As long as it took to film and complete MAN OF STEEL, this seems pretty impossible unless they're stupid. This would result in a too similar situation like REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. 2015 for MOS2 is more likely. And I agree with CinemaScore :)

Dang studios, slow down. I think the same thing happened with Fast & Furious 7, and they lost the director. Just as many people will pay to see this in 2015 as 2014. Honestly, I don't even know the reason to rush a film that quickly.

Please, no...

Ugh... No. Please. No. I'm sensing a trend lately in superhero movies before The Avengers came out... they took their time. They were given enough time to be made into the great movies they were supposed to be, no matter how long it took (usually 2 to 3 years). After The Avengers, though, it feels like everything is being fast-tracked to a ridiculous degree. I don't like the sound of this at all. After The Avengers, though, it feels like everything is being fast-tracked to a ridiculous degree. I don't like the sound of this at all. I know Iron Man 3 was probably being made long before the Avengers, but it was a terrible movie and failed miserably on pretty much every level. Even if it was in development for a while, it felt rushed and lazy.

Now to hear that Man of Steel might be fast-tracked for its sequel? Nooo... :( I adored the movie, which surprised me considering I have never liked Superman as a superhero. It was an amazing film by so many accounts. But to fast-track a sequel, especially one that should be crafted carefully to bridge into a Justice League film? No.

Don't slap a release date on it until the script is written and it starts filming, at least. Get a gauge of how long it will take from that point, then get the release date. That's how I feel.

I welcome a Man of Steel sequel, of course, but worry that this soon release date will stress it down into a by-the-numbers crap sequel on the disappointing level of Iron Man 3 :(

I agree with both scores actually...this is a very different Superman film from what has been ingrained in us (which would be the Donner films). Yes, this film didn't have as much humor we expected (or was used to), and we didn't totally connect with all the characters here which is why it got alot of mixed reviews, but it's still an epic movie in its scope and it showed what alot of Superman fans have been dying to see: Supes hitting an enemy and an enemy hitting back.

I was talking to a friend about this film and he felt disappointed after seeing this and when I asked why I noticed all his complaints about what was missing were iconic moments or images from the Donner films (the first date between Supes and Lois, the montage of Supes doing rescues and such, etc.). When I pointed this out to him he paused and laughed.
I think people will feel much better about the sequel (if its written well that is).
