Warner Bros. is working on all-female spinoff movie featuring Harley Quinn

05.16.2016

harley quinn, margot robbie, suicide squad, dc cinematic universe

You had to know that eventually Warner Bros. was going to bet big on Harley Quinn in a major way, and it would seem that time is finally upon us. With Margot Robbie carrying the torch for the character for the foreseeable future, the studio is already making moves to add more Harley Quinn to their expanding DC Cinematic Universe.

The beloved character is finally set to make her feature film debut later this summer in SUICIDE SQUAD, but that certainly won't be the last we see of her. She won't just be confined to future SUICIDE SQUAD movies or anything involving Batman and The Joker... oh no... Harley Quinn is going to be one of the driving forces that bring more female superheroines and supervillains into the world that's being built. A spin-off is being discussed that would not be a solo Harley Quinn movie, but one that introduces the likes of Batgirl, Birds of Prey and others into the fray. Robbie would still be an integral part of the film, but she would be a part of the ensemble rather than the main focus.

Currently a female writer is at work on a screenplay for the untitled film, but no loose lips are willing to spill the info on who that scribe might be at this time. In addition, there is no real telling as to when or where a film of this nature would slot into the slate of films Warner Bros. has been claiming dates for in the next few years. There are a number of untitled DC event films on the calendar, but, since there is no real cohesive plan moving forward as to how all these films might connect, it's anyone's guess really as to where something like this would fit in.

Harley Quinn has been a huge fan favorite since being created late in the mythology of Batman, and it makes perfect sense for her to get a great deal of spotlight... especially if all the early buzz on Robbie's performance turns out true. Plus, Quinn interacts with a lot of these female characters in her comics, too, so building those relationships could add another dynamic to the DC Cinematic Universe that other superhero movies haven't really been touching. All in all, this is an interesting development for Warner Bros. and their DC shared universe. Now it's a matter of figuring out how to make this work with everything else they're throwing against the wall.

Margot Robbie's debut as Harley Quinn in SUICIDE SQUAD happens on August 5.

Too much all-female cast movies planned

Don't get me wrong. Steel Magnolias is my favourite play, and it only has female roles. It would never work with an all-male cast. But this year, we get an all-female Ghostbusters, there is an all-female Ocean's 11 planned, and now this all-female DC movie. And I have a sense that these movie concepts don't come from filmmakers who have a great idea WHY make an all-female movie rather than a studio head forces them to make something to appeal female audiences.

The difference is that DC has been putting out "girl"-themed & focused story lines for years. They have a fairly strong roster of unique female heroes/ villains...I say get some additional hotties in those suits and go for it. Your example of Ghostbusters & Oceans isn't really applicable to already established existing female characters. Oh, and Rebecca Ferguson for Poison Ivy.

Birds of Prey would be an awesome movie, just as long as Melissa McCarthy doesn't play Oracle.

I'd like to see how well Suicide Squad and the rest of the DCU films do critically and financially before DC decides on spin offs.

After BVS how about you actually wait until Suicide Squad actually happens before you start planning spin off of characters. Let us see if the movie and the characters are abortions of everything that makes them what they are in the comics, because you plan on giving us more of them.

Margot Robbie is a major star in the making

and I think Warner/DC is going to have the same problem as Fox did when they cast Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique for the X-MEN films - they're going to have to change stories to accommodate a major star with a massive fan base. Hopefully, that doesn't mean WB doesn't imitate Fox and try to turn a villain into a hero - it's a difficult fit with Mystique and near impossible with Harley Quinn.

I will put money on this being shelved the second the all female Ghostbusters fails. I'm not saying it's right, just that it will happen.

Spin-offs are tricky to pull off. A great supporting character doesn't always equal a great protagonist. I don't think they should've announced this before the release of SUICIDE SQUAD. We've seen her in trailers but what if, in the actual movie, she's not well-received by critics and audiences?

This is great news!

Margot showing great interest in the Harley character to drive a movie development forward sounds good. Harley Quinn is a great character from the BTAS days.... Dont really understand the negative and pessimistic nature of the article.

What exactly is negative or pessimistic? It's hard to see where the film slots into the DCU, but otherwise, all for it.

Those are all widely accepted issues with the DCU as a whole, not this particular project.

If you are indifferent or don't like the idea with the whole DCEU, then its okay man, you don't have to write these articles about it and have someone else write them. That way, the articles will be free of snark. Its okay to not be "all for it" and accept it.

A Harley Quinn movie has potential. Dawn of Justice did not have a fun Wonder Woman--or Superman or Batman, for that matter. However, Harley Quinn is generally a fun character to encounter in a dark setting. She works much like Deadpool over at Fox. She is supposed to bring a gallows humor in a story that is more adult-oriented.

Poison Ivy

Hope his movie will bring her to the screen again! It's been awhile since 1997 with Uma Thurman being the most watchable part of Batman & Robin.

I'm cool with all this, it'd be awesome if it was cat woman and poison Ivey, but why does it have to include batgirl/a female writer? I love batgirl too, but only females can fight females? And write females? Why don't u ask the guy who created the character to help. And the tones gonna be hell a tricky.
