Warner Bros. reboot of Dungeons & Dragons delayed due to Hasbro lawsuit

05.15.2013

Despite already producing a god awful big screen DUNGEONS & DRAGONS movie back in 2000, Warner Bros. has set up a new movie based on the role-playing game. But, there is now a lawsuit out there from Hasbro saying that the movie studio no longer owns the rights to make a sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit claims that producer Sweatpea Entertainment has lapsed on their right to make a sequel despite releasing two follow-ups: 2005's WRATH OF THE DRAGON GOD and 2012's THE BOOK OF VILE DARKNESS.

The key to Hasbro's claim is that the 2005 movie was only released on television as a SyFy movie and the 2012 film has never seen US distribution. In fact, if you have seen any of the three movies, you will want to do everything you can to prevent SweetPea from making another DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Hasbro's subsidiary Wizards of the Coast owns the rights to the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game and has been developing a big screen project of their own at Universal under the assumption that they had the rights to the property.

Both Warner Bros. and Hasbro seem confident they will win the lawsuit. WB announced their plans to make DUNGEONS & DRAGONS as a big budget summer movie, likely to capitalize on the success of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and GAME OF THRONES. While I have never played the RPG, the title would definitely benefit from a more serious treatment than it was given by the Marlon Wayans version. Hopefully, whoever prevails, gives us a quality epic worthy of the name DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.

...not that you need a license for any existing fantasy universe to make an epic fantasy movie - nobody owns dungeons, dragons or plucky young heroes - if you have a story worth telling the franchise it's attached to should be irrelevant. Of course that's not how it goes, but given the cinematic history of D&D it's hardly worth bickering over. Make a movie of the old cartoon series of Dungeons & Dragons and you've got a unique enough concept to warrant being licensed.

I love The Nostalgia Critic's review of the film.

"OVER-ACTING (Jeremy Irons) vs. UNDER-ACTING (Thora Birch)!"

Star Wars is Sci-Fi (or Space Opera if you like) but not fantasy.

And I'd prefer they use Gord the Rogue or Drizzt.

Okay, forget all those 3 movies and even forget the game itself. Like Rubox said, base the movie on the 1980s cartoon and everything is golden.

I say base it on the cartoon. That was really cool. They had dungeon master come in and out every now and then.

Just checked out Book of Vile Darkness and the other posters were right, it's actually not half bad for a B movie.

Say my name!

So why not just rip off Never Ending Story? Have some nerd go to a *gasp* bookstore a la Never Ending Story and pick up some magical dice. His imagination and dice rolling controls the actions of the heroes. Or you could even make it where the dice transports a group of friends into a D&D type world where they have to use the dice to defeat some evil wizard so they can get back home. Also, Warner can contact me through JoBlo to ensure the royalty checks get sent to the correct addres...

The 3rd D&D movie, Book of Vile Darkness, was surprisingly good. It actually had an interesting story and didn't rely on the same tired, old clichés (unlikely band of heroes forming to save the world).
The 1st movie was a cinematic stillbirth, while the 2nd was only mildly better (still sucked balls).
I'm kind of neutral on this for now. I haven't played D&D in a decade or so, but it was a large part of my childhood and would love to see another movie that wasn't complete shit.

2nd movie was a little better. Then again it's like the difference of a tummy ache to a hernia.

Wow

I have never seen this movie but that piece of shit trailer looks like something Asylum would produce for the SyFy channel.

Didn't heard about the 3rd one until now. If they're going to reboot this, at least adapt the novels. They're not exactly literary masterpieces, but they're waaaay better than the movies.

Give the 3rd movie (Book of Vile Darkness) a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by it.
