Warner Bros reveals the first images from their upcoming film version of The Dark Knight Returns

3 years agoby:

In 1986, two comics were published that raised the bar for all comics that came after. One was WATCHMEN and the other was THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Now, DC Comics Premiere and Warner Bros are finally bringing Frank Miller's Batman epic to life.

The animated version of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS will be split into two parts. One will be released on blu-ray this fall and the other in 2013. The film retains the signature look and feel of the comic and has an awesome voice cast featuring Peter Weller as Bruce Wayne/Batman. That's right, folks: Robocop is Batman!

Plot: One of the most influential comics of all time, Dark Knight Returns is set in a near future where Batman is retired and Gotham City has slid into a dystopian state ruled by a gang of hooligans called the Mutants. The 55-year old Bruce Wayne is forced to don the cape once more, this time partnering with a female Robin to not only stop the Joker but keep the peace when the city falls into chaos after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse.

The four-book miniseries, along with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, also published that year, was praised for its mature and psychological take on superheroes. It set a violent and realistic tone in superhero comics and served as a big influence on Christopher Nolan's Batman movie trilogy, the last of which opens July 20.

Also in the cast are Ariel Winter (MODERN FAMILY) as Robin, David Selby, Wade Williams, and Michael McKean. The film was directed by Jay Oliva, who storyboarded Zack Snyderís upcoming Superman movie Man of Steel and directed sequences of Warners and DCís animated feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

As soon as a trailer is released, you will find it here. For now, take a look at these awesome images from THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

Looks good but...

...my only complaint is that Kevin Conroy isn't voicing Batman. He will always be Batman to me.

Batman: The Animated Series

In the original Batman: The Animated Series, there was an episode where a girl was telling a story about when she saw Batman. They used the Dark Knight Returns as the story and Batman was voiced by Michael Ironsides. Now that would have been an iconic voice to use.

Chin

That chin... could it be any bigger? Seriously, how could the people of Gotham not recognize Batman was Bruce Wayne with that billboard sized chin?

Two parter!

That fact that its gonna be a two parter is really exciting. This could end up being one of the best Batman movies ever made.

I AM looking forward to this

I've really enjoyed all of the DC animated movies I have seen. And Peter Weller is an interesting, and I'm sure will be a very good choice.
But hear me out for a moment.
Ever since I first read The Dark Knight Returns, I have been fairly vocal in my belief that if this would ever be adapted into a movie, animated or live-action, that Alec Baldwin should play Bruce/Batman. Alec isn't quite as old as he's portrayed in the book, but the build and definitely voice fit perfectly. At least in my

You may go about your business again.

One thing DC has done right are their animated movies. They're by far better then what Marvel has put out in their animated films so far. The quailty of the writing, action, animation and voice acting is quite impressive. Check out the movies nightwalker just mentioned and any of the DC animated movies, its definately worth a watch.

The book that made Batman my favorite Comic book character of all time as well as my favorite comic book/graphic novel ever written. it's sheer brilliance and I really hope they capture the depth and violence without watering it down for kids as any time they have ever directed batman towards the children or to be politically correct, it has failed and turned out horrid eg "Batman and Robin" and all that Adam West bullshit. So I hope they capture this as it was meant

Wow, I'm the first slightly negative nancy? I don't care for the look of the animation. Looks too much like the other animated versions and not enough like the novel. Oh well, I won't go all red on it. It's based on one of my favorite literary works ever and I'm stoked. And I was hoping if they couldn't get Conroy, they'd get Michael Ironside again . . .

Monumental book

This could be really awesome, a film version of these comics. I think the books more influenced tim burton than nolan however.
