Warner Bros. to pull Harry Potter DVDs from shelves after Christmas

10.25.2011

If you interested in owning any of the HARRY POTTER films on DVD or Blu-ray, you might want to think about purchasing them in the next two months. On December 29th, Warner Bros. will stop shipping all POTTER DVDs, Blu-rays, box sets, limited editions, etc. to all stores.

It's the old Disney "back in the vault" strategy where they attempt to drum up sales by making their home video title available for a limited time. Then they release titles from the non-existent vault and get people buying them all over again.

It's unclear exactly how long the POTTER films will stay in the so-called vault but Disney traditionally leaves their films locked up for about 10 years before slowly beginning the re-release.

I'll be curious to see if the vaulting also applies to any digital downloads or streaming on Netflix. One of the concepts behind Disney's original vault was to help keep the film's fresh for new generations but with the amount of options people have now to watch films, DVDs and Blu-rays are just one part of the equation.

So do you think you're going to quickly snatch up the whole franchise before they disappear? Do you already own most of the discs?

Can we get George Lucas to do this, too?

I read they're releasing new editions in 2012. Not sure if it'll be like extended Lord of the Rings, or just repackaged with new behind the scenes or whatever.
Obviously extended editions would make it worth it, but it's probably just repackaged. There are scenes that have not been released though. Or are those coming in like 2014 for another cash grab?

it's funny

but it's this kind of shit is one of things that can make a decent argument for piraters. Personally if i actually liked a movie but couldn't get it because the production company has a bullshit strategy to milk it for as much money as possible i would just download it. End of story.

Waiting on the 8 movie set.

It's so stupid how WB has been releasing the "Years 1-4" set or the "Years 1-6" set and so on. Even stupider that people actually bought them. Anyways, we're probably going to give in to this crap and pick up the 8 movie collection before the end of the year.

Huh?

So wait. Those 4-disc "ultimate editions" they've been releasing -- they're not gonna finish that? Sucks for the people who bought all the rest and wanted to complete the series.

And, despite the promises, only the Ultimate Editions of the first 2 films had the extended cut, when they said ALL OF THEM would...
Beside, only the Ultimate Editions of the first 2 films were released in Europe...

Mega Box Set Coming in 2012

According to thedigitalbits, this is all part of a planned obsolescence as a Warner Bros. press release stated that, though a box set of all the films does indeed come out on 11/11/11 - they will be movie only editions. A much more elaborate Special Edition box set of all 8 films (on DVD and Blu) with more/new extra features is stated to be coming in 2012.

Dear reader,
Please don't pirate these films when they've gone :(
Thank you, Disney.

According to WHV...

We're supposed to get an ultimate collection box set in 2012 which is the reason for the pulling in December.

Lame. I really don't get the point. Besides, aren't we expecting Ultimate Editions of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts I and II within a year?

Exactly.

Some decisions are flat out bizarre. But I'm no market analyst.
