Warner Bros. will release Rob McElhenney’s Minecraft movie in May of 2019

Gamers are familiar with the polygonal world of Minecraft, but for those of you unaware, the sandbox-style video game allows players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world, where they can also explore, gather resources, craft and engage in combat. It was announced some time ago that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney would be directing the flick, and now we have a release date: May 25, 2019.

It’s not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. is probably going the LEGO MOVIE route with this one, and after seeing Telltale Games’ iteration featuring some voice acting, it’s not a huge stretch to see how they’ll pull this one off. Minecraft’s block aesthetic has never appealed to me, but if an Angry Birds movie can bring in over $300 million worldwide, I’m thinking Minecraft will do just fine.

MINECRAFT will hit theaters on May 25, 2019.

Traditionally, Rob McElhenney does not do well with games.
