Warner Brothers does a babality on Mortal Kombat, reboot time!

01.25.2010

You secretly knew it was coming...

Warner Brothers is looking to reboot MORTAL KOMBAT with screenwriter Oren Uziel. Uziel's screenplay for SHIMMER LAKE got a spot on 2009's black list, which displays the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood.

Mortal Kombat is my favorite fighting game, so I have a soft spot for the first movie that was released back in 1995. It was cheesy, wonderful, and Christopher Lambert played Raiden. I know it wasn't the greatest video game to movie adaptation, but I can't see it getting any better. For some reason, I also don't see someone like say, David Fincher picking it up. They will probably get some sub-par director (pick any of them) to do it. Paul W. S. Anderson helmed the first KOMBAT film. Say what you will about him. He's cool in my book because of EVENT HORIZON.

My question is, whatever happened to MORTAL KOMBAT 3? It was supposed to film last September and we haven't heard anything about it since then. Did they give up? MK3 was under the WB umbrella, so I'm guessing they are going to scrap it.

What would you like to see with the reboot? Perhaps make it more gruesome? All I ask is that they do an epic Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion fight again and throw Baraka in it.

Extra Tidbit: Question: Which fight in the film was better? Liu Kang versus Reptile? Or Johnny Cage versus Scorpion?

Hey! Everybody's forgetting how awesome Super Mario Bros. was! I'm not joking either. As for my favorite video game adaptions, I own Doom, plan of buying Max Payne, love the Resident Evil series (though the second film was lacking; and I'll wait until they finish making RE films, then buy a box-set), and I liked Silent Hill as well. Of course, I'm not comparing the films to the games here. Even if a film isn't an "honest" adaption, it can still be a great film. Anyhoo...

This is a reboot/remake I'm actually okay with. I love the first movie, but it is retarded. I'd love to see what they could do with better effects and wire stunts.

now...

...all they need to do is hire Zack Snyder to make this bitch, and it should end up being a pretty kick-ass time at the movies.

Was there a better video game to movie adaptation than MK? Kage vs Scorpion easily. That was the fight everyone came out of the cinema talking about. Someone said Jai White as Jax. That'd be cool. Add Scott Adkins as Kano while you're at it.

Ugh....

This one's a tough call. I've been reading about a third MK movie since I was in the fourth grade, and I'm a Junior in high school now. I suppose if there's only one way to actually get another one, and that's by rebooting, then by all means. I'm a die-hard fan and am finally starting to be impatient.

MK was fucking entertaining at the time

Most of the characters and suits were perfect from the first movie. Especially for that time they did as good as one can do with a game brought to the big screen. The fights combined with the music made me instantly want to pick a fight with someone, i was full of adrenaline. Michael jai white for JAX? Bring back most of the cast please.

Horrible Idea

The first movie was "good" when it came out. I say that only because it was during the time when it was at the height of it popularity. This is coming out of nowhere as the last Mortal Kombat game didn't sell all that well, and the extra downloadable characters that were planned for it are canceled because the publishing company got switched over.

KAGE VS. SCORPION

That was one of the coolest fights scenes to date when it came out. I'm game for a reboot, as long as they make it darker and keep Goro from "ROARING" so much...

I'm sick of people saying "I hate Paul Anderson but he DID make "Event Horizon." Ahem-- Anderson sucks! Just because he made ONE good movie doesn't excuse the fact that he's one of the biggest Hollywood hacks in history! That rant aside, I look forward to a reboot. The original series is pretty crappy. Sure Anderson was faithful to the source material in the first movie, but it was PG-13 for Christ sake. No Fatalaties? No thanks.

First Movie

I think basically the whole cast in the first one was dead on. The 2nd actor couldn't hold a stick to Lambert as Raiden. Johnny Cage ended up being great. The actor who played shang sung was great. Someone said Thomas Jane as Raiden, that could actually work.

Great cast all-around. Robin Shou is still Liu Kang to me.

Reptile in human form has always been my favorite character. The fight between him and Liu Kang always got my blood flowing. However, the hellish brutality of Johnny Cage vs Scorpion was always more hardcore. MK and RE are the only Anderson films I like. At any rate, I really couldn't give half a rat's ass about a new MK movie. As long as the first movie still exists, that's all I need.

Couldn't Agree More

I have to say I loved the first movie, second one...mmmm, not so much.

It did exactly what fans wanted, threw loads of great fight sequences together and kept the story to a minimum; oh and Lambert as Raiden was worth the entry price alone.

Extra Tidbit

I LUV all the fights, especially Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion, Liu Kang vs. Sub-Zero, and Liu vs. Reptile....

But I'll have to give it to Johnny V Scorp, on account of that wicked Fear Factory track.

Actually the music on the whole in the first film is great, and I'm not talk'n just the soundtrack(which does indeed kick a$$). The score by Geroge S. Clinton is really solid. You know it's good when it's being used in subsequent trailers for other movies. :)

The first MK movie is...

the second best video game adaptation of all time (first being Silent Hill), and was a rather excellent and all sorts of fun action film that stayed true to the spirit and tone of it's source.

The sequel sucked balls, and so I am kind of glad this will be getting redone. As long as it's done right, with the right actors and a director who can handle the action and visual effects (Len Wiseman is my vote), I am definitely down with this.

The first Mortal Kombat was awesome! I was a fanatic for the games so the movie really hit the spot. I remember leaving the cinema as a kid with my brothers and we couldn't shut up about it. Watching it now the fights are a bit lame and could do with a revamp but it's still thoroughly enjoyable, even with the head-tilting wtf casting of Christopher Lambert.

Hell yeah, I'm up for a new one! Get Ronny Yu to direct it...Fearless had immense fight scenes, the right colour palette and somehow

Good to see

The first MK movie getting so much love! As a huge fan back in the day, I went in expecting another Van Damme "Street Fighter" disaster and came out more than pleasantly surprised. It was faithful to its source material, met my expectations as a fan, and beyond that was just a hell of an entertaining movie in its own right - the perfect ingredients for a GOOD video game movie.

An MK3 would be a lost cause, I say hop on the reboot trolly wagon and ride that sucker to an even better adaptation of the first two(->best) games. Leave out the cheesy humor, stick with mostly practical fighting & stunt work, and make it a raging hard-R baby!!! :D

The first movie is definitely the best video game adaptation movie to date. The actors weren't the best but that movie wasn't as corny as the others. Lambert was classic as Rayden. And for the record Cage vs. Scorpion was the best fight. This remake is gonna be awesome!

I'm actually pumped about this. Some things deserved to be remade, and Mortal Kombat is in a league of its own when it comes to fighting games and movie adaptions. It's got a badass storyline with a wealth of characters that's perfect for some summer blockbuster blood fests.

This is gonna need more action. More blood. Harsher finales. More fight scenes. And the pace of the first movie, cuz annihilation sucked ass.

You're right, it isn't saying much. But you're right, it IS the best video game movie adaptation. 15 years later and, really it hasn't even come close to being beat.

Cage vs. Scorpion was the best fight.

Anyway, I'm hoping for an R rated movie. Hopefully with awesome blood and gore FX.

I forgot that Paul W. S. Anderson directed the first MK so I check to see what else he's done. Didn't realize how many movies based on video games he's made. He loves them almost as much as Uwe Boll.
extra tidbit: Cage vs Scorpion

MK REBOOT

As much as I love the original films I really wouldn't mind seeing this get rebooted with a whole new director and cast, with today's technology who wouldn't want to see a Mortal Kombat movie?! I say they make it more gruesome and R rated.

tidbit: definatley Johnny Cage versus Scorpion fight.

Quite a good news considering MK2: Annihilation is bad. But would this be just Mortal Kombat or Mortal Kombat 3? As for the tidbit, Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion.

Just Mortal Kombat. Like I was saying in the article, I have no idea what's going on with MK3. Warner Brothers apparently had dibbs on it, in that case they'd be separate.

dude, the first MK is a classic in my book.. Johnny Cage punching Gorro in the nuts after he broke his sunglasses is a thing of cinematic beauty. What did happen to MK3 is right.. last I heard they were getting back the original cast of the first one and then all of a sudden the movie just collapsed.

This can be good or bad.. the good is we can get the perfect mix of cheese and awesome violence, or the bad is we can get something like the last Street Fighter movie. And nobody wants that..
