Warren Beatty says he still wants to make another Dick Tracy film

Jun. 10, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Warren Beatty has been talking about a sequel to 1990's DICK TRACY since, well, 1990. But in the 21 years since that film hit theaters, Beatty has only starred in four films and he's notoriously sluggish in moving projects forward. But last night at a DICK TRACY screening in Los Angeles, Beatty reiterated that he wants to make a DICK TRACY sequel and the time may be sooner rather than later.

Beatty flatly said, "I’m gonna make another one," when asked about a sequel adding, "I think I’ll feel better if I make this movie."

I know the Beatty film has its admirers (including Beatty himself who seems very fond of both his film and the material) but I wasn't much of a fan as a kid (despite the fact that I had camped out to see it) and revisited it recently and didn't like it much more. There are some great aspects to it but overall never worked for me.

To his credit, it sounds like Beatty is trying to modernize TRACY with big-budget effects and CGI. He told the audience of the style he employed for the original film, I can tell you that the matte paintings…they move me.

Would you be interested in a DICK TRACY sequel? And what are your thoughts on the original?

yes

I think it would be fun. I loved the movie as a kid. The colors and sets were amazing. Even the cheese factor worked with it. I could see Jon Hamm as a Dick Tracy.

William Forsythe as Flattop scarred me for life. Love the movie, it's a great campy pulp-noir that benefitted from the strong supporting cast.

I'd rather see a fresh take on it.

A grittier, more noirish version.

I did enjoy his "Dick Tracy" movie. Sure it's not for all tastes, but at the time few films were so much an exercise in style. I love the matte paintings, the bright colors, the stark Good and Bad. The Who's Who of character actors.

But that was 21 years ago. Warren Beatty wasn't a young man when he made that movie, and the guy's in his mid-'70s now. I'd love to see him go back to acting, but leave "Dick Tracy" alone. That was a character for an era, and he lovingly paid tribute to that.

Sure, once I might've been interested in seeing another one, but I feel the same way as I do about the proposed "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" sequel. Should've struck while the iron was still hot.

Wouldn't be opposed to it...

but with someone else playing Tracy. I hope Warren doesn't think he should play the title role.

I know this will sound very fanboy of me, but Nathan Fillion for Dick Tracy. Make it happen

Is it just me

or does Hollywood not seem to fear the wrath of time? Beatty's 74. I don't discourage the ambition, I just can't believe people are 'leaning' toward projects like this in their golden years.

The first film's sets and cinematography are extraordinary...but the movie is boring...it's on par with the recent "sky captain and the world of tomorrow" as far as likability in my book.

Yikes...The Kid will be in his 30's and Breathless Mahoney will be called such as she'll need an oxygen tank!

Not sure about a sequel but....

Dick Tracy (1990) kicks ass. While probably not for everyone, I still enjoy this film and have fond memories of it from when I was a kid. It's very stylized and has a loaded cast. Personally I think it still holds up today.

Yeah, the original was underrated, that's for sure. I wonder if he would star in it, though? Maybe as Tracy is called out of retirement because someone is killing all his old Rogues Gallery?
And the culprit is...

Mrs. Pruneface!!!

As long as he's not in it....

I'm fine with that. Get another young Tracy in there cause to be honest, he was the only aspect I didn't like about the first movie.

Ummmmm

He's like almost 70. How in the hell does he think he could be Dick Tracy again. He hasn't made a film in over 10 years. Maybe a reboot in the vain of the Green Hornet, but not a sequel. That film was the begining of the end for Al Pacino.

I loved it when I was a kid, but I also re-watched recently... and yeah, it's not very good at all. Pacino is entertaining as Big Boy, but the rest of the movie... meh.

Dick Tracy and the case of the nursing home bandit.

The first one sucked, and now Beatty is WAY too old for a second try.

Easily...

This is easily one of the best, if not the best, comic book adaptation ever put to screen. Not sure I'd like a sequel though, but no skin off my back, I love this one.
