Warren Beatty's new project will be about Howard Hughes, big names being eyed for the film's roles

Jun. 23, 2011by: George Merchan

A couple of days ago, the news was that Warren Beatty cut a deal to star and direct in an "untitled comedy" for Paramount that he himself had written. Today, Deadline is reporting that Beatty's project is in fact a film about the later years of aviation mogul Howard Hughes's life (i.e. probably when he was like this).

Beatty will play Hughes (a part he's been after for quite a long time), though the picture isn't exactly being classified as a biopic. All that's currently known is that part of the plot involves "an affair he had with a young woman" when he was an older man. As for who else might be joining Beatty, here's who the writer/director/actor is reportedly meeting with: Andrew Garfield, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Shia LaBeouf, Jack Nicholson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Rooney Mara.

While this is all very well and good, my question is: What's going to happen to Christopher Nolan's long-planned Hughes film, his supposed next project after THE DARK KNIGHT RISES? His version (which was originally going to star Jim Carrey) has already been sidelined once before thanks to Martin Scorsese's THE AVIATOR. I like Beatty and I'd like to see him come back with something worthwhile, but I really don't want to see Nolan's project sidelined yet again.
Extra Tidbit: I know there are a lot of LaBeouf naysayers out there, but the guy really seems to get a lot of love from the people actually making movies...

I like LaBeouf but i think he is really shooting himself in the foot by saying no to more transformers films I mean when he goes and does his indie flop he will need a big budget franchise to keep those fancy suits in his closet my idea is give transformers a break come back 4/5 years later and do another trilogy or whatever

I wonder how he managed to get a meeting with Annette Bening... did she go down to the production office like everyone else or was it over coffee in the kitchen?
Seriously, though, I want to see Beatty's version of Hughes, so I say let's do it!

Another One?!!?

I thought The Aviator was great. But do we really need another film about Howard Hughes in less than 10 years? I mean I understand he was a very influential person in the shaping of modern airline/planes but is that worth all these proposed films? Yet, a good film is a good film no matter the subject so, I guess I'll wait and see.

I call it

the "Spruce Moose", and it will carry two hundred passengers from New York's Idyllwild Airport to the Belgian Congo in seventeen minutes!

I don't need...

This could be a blessing in disguise. I really don't need to see another movie about Howard Hughes since we already got one. Nolan is a great director and story teller, so hopefully this will point him in the direction of another project he is passionate about. I don't want to see or care to see his take on what would be a third film in like 10 years on the same person. Here's to rooting for another original movie out of Nolan. Fingers crossed.

I THINK NOLAN ...

... should ditch Hughes. After Aviator and this, public will not be so much interested in a new Hughes movie, even if it comes from Nolan. I'd rather see him doing something original like Inception ...

So Alec Baldwin again?

I think Beatty would have a pretty cool take on the neurotic billionaire. I'm sorry if this causes problems for Nolan's movie, but I'm much more interested in Beatty making a comeback.
