As a movie lover, one of the greatest things to watch is filmmakers talking about other filmmakers. What moves them, what inspires them, and what has influenced their own approach when taking in the works of other like-minded artists.
Today, a short but very cool little featurette for THE TREE OF LIFE has popped up over at Apple, and it covers just that. Two of our very best filmmakers working today – Christopher Nolan and David Fincher – sit and discuss Terrence Malick and all the unique and special things that make a Malick film. Again, it’s short, and I could frankly sit and listen to these guys talk about this sort of thing for hours, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of these filmmakers (and I have a suspicious feeling that you are).
THE TREE OF LIFE is now playing in limited release and opens wide on July 8th.
Synopsis: From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE THIN RED LINE, THE TREE OF LIFE is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.
