Watch out for Thor's Hammer in the NSFW trailer for the remake of Vacation

05.07.2015

The prospect of remaking NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION filled many people with dread. There is very little that can compete with that classic comedy and very few who could step into Chevy Chase's shoes. So, instead, the new VACATION is a sequel to those classic comedies while featuring a new cast led by Ed Helms and Christina Applegate.

Reusing the same plot as the original movie, the new VACATION makes a distinct effort to say that it is it's own movie while hitting practically every beat as the classic film. There seems to be a concerted effort to make Helms' Rusty Griswold as vacuous as his father but he seems to go back and forth in what he does or does not know. In one scene, he knows what a gloryhole is but in the next is clueless about rim-jobs. I get that writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are trying to replicate the classic comedy but it seems a bit off balance.

Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a road trip to "Walley World" in order to spice things up with his wife and reconnect with his sons.

The inclusion of Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase in cameos is a good choice but the key casting here seems to be Chris Hemsworth who steals the trailer in his short screen time. That and the final gag that twists a scene from the original makes me think that this may be a VACATION worth taking.

VACATION opens in theaters on July 29th.

I think the trailer is funny. Not indicative of the movie itself. I do like that they seem to be borrowing 21 Jump Street's method of throwing in meta comments to acknowledge that this is a sort of remake/reboot that people weren't exactly chomping at the bit for. It's a gimmick that probably has a short shelf-life if the movie turns out to be bad, but right now it's appreciated.

It looked funny, but it's gonna be near impossible to top the original!

Ruining Trailer Gags

This is going to come off as angry and rant-like, but I'm only saying this as a genuine criticism of this website. This site has had a trend of ruining surprises in trailers. Granted, I could care less about this Vacation trailer, but the big surprise at the end (no pun intended) is the inclusion of Chris Hemsworth and the ensuing dick joke. That surprise is entirely removed when not only the article headline features the surprise, but the accompanying picture presents the whole gag in all its

Granted, I could care less about this Vacation trailer, but the big surprise at the end (no pun intended) is the inclusion of Chris Hemsworth and the ensuing dick joke. That surprise is entirely removed when not only the article headline features the surprise, but the accompanying picture presents the whole gag in all its glory, ruining the gag in the process.

I wish this were the only occasion, but the biggest infraction was in the release of the latest Star Wars trailer. As a huge Star Wars fan, I wish I could've experienced the same nostalgic nerdgasm everyone else experienced when Han and Chewie appeared on screen, but that surprise was taken away because the article link featured the image of the two heroes from the end of the trailer.

I've been following this website since its inception years ago when JoBlo himself wrote all his own movie reviews and remember being exposed to American Psycho early on because of his glowing review. But lately, there's seems to be a kind of carelessness to this site including late articles for news that other sites had a day earlier.

Just a thought.

Gotta agree with you. Instead of letting the audience find out for themselves, it seems they use the biggest gags or shocks as a headline to gain more views.

Is this considered a remake? Maybe a hybrid of a remake and a sequel? A requel? Anyway, I laughed. That's what's important. I thought some of the in jokes were pretty funny, like the car getting hit at the end. It seems funny enough to check out, unless this movie gets abysmal reviews (which I estimate, it very well could).

"Maybe a hybrid of a remake and a sequel? A requel?" The term you're looking for is "Reboot".

I hope there is a joke about how Rusty and Audry are played by different actors in each movie

Ugh, the way this movie seems to be written it will go just like the stupid "I've never heard of the original Vacation".

Rusty is on his way to meet with his sister and on the way tells his kids "Audrey likes to change her look a lot, so did I, It was the 80's nobody could keep the same identity for long"

I'm a huge fan of this franchise and this is everything I wanted out of a new installment. Looks hilarious and the R rating, Lindsay Buckingham, and the fact that they go to the same hotel, mean to me that the filmmakers give a shit. Bring it on.

wow, that was actually pretty funny. Hopefully they aren't the only funny moments of the entire film....

It's not the same comedic style as the original films...

Gross out humor is the cheapest of all laughs. The original movies had actual funny lines that worked with comedic timing.

It just doesn't feel like a Vacation movie.

Um, I'm pretty sure he would know what a rim-job is just not telling his son, the glory hole joke seemed out of place though.

The last 10 seconds had me rolling. It has potential but they need to keep the shit/dick jokes to a minimum.

Not gonna lie...

I got a good three laughs out of that. One was for the self aware jokes. I know it doesn't really make up for retreading a classic purly for name recignition but I far prefer the winking acknowledgments of how unoriginal it is. Also like the fact that it's not a strait up remake. Honestly the title and references to the original are the only things that seperate it from any other standard roadtrip comedy.

Also. I may be wrong but Is Leslie Mann plaing the adult Audrey? Lastly the Hemsworth

I like cruel humor when it is gone right but this looks like Seth MacFarlene/Adam Sandler levels of quality.

Just because you acknowledge/steal jokes from the original doesn't make it funny.

As long as it keeps the tone of the original films in some ways, then it shouldn't be too bad.

I think it looks like a lot of fun. Love the cast. If I end up hating it I'll just stick to the original but I think it looks good. I don't mind those inconsistencies because it's already wacky and ridiculous.

It seems to be stealing jokes from "21 Jump Street" and "Family Guy". And most of the other jokes seems crass and immature.

But you know what. I laughed like hell through the whole thing. This looks a lot better than i thought it would be, probably because there are so few R-comedies. I may check this one out.
