Watch the powerful first trailer for the NC-17 Shame

Nov. 1, 2011by: Paul Tassi

Normally up above I'd post a screenshot of the film or the title credits, but I figured I'd capture this moment, as it's not one you'll see very often. Shame is the first mainstream film in a long while to run with its NC-17 rating, and Fox Searchlight claims they’re trying to break free of the tyranny of the classification.

They didn’t want to cut down their film about a sex addict (Michael Fassbender) and his younger sister (Carey Mulligan), and so they left it just the way they wanted it, free from censors. The trailer below is really well done, and absolutely makes me want to see the film, if a theater near me will agree to show it that is. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon's insular life spirals out of control.

Extra Tidbit: Im guessing if the two are siblings, we might see uh, a controversial scene or two pertaining to that.

Sadly, you can make as many sexually explicit comedies as you want, and show brutal rape in a remake to The Hills Have Eyes, but address sexuality in any kind of mature light, and you're threatened with censorship. It doesn't make any sense!

seems weird that it says NC-17 and then SOME explicit sexual content. I wouldve lost the some part if I was the MPAA

Canadian Ratings

Man, I love that this will be rated either 18A or R in Canada, and that a wider selection of theatres will show it here, compared to the States. Can't wait to see this, and I'm glad the studio didn't compromise

This and the 3 minute Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are by far my favorite trailers of the year so far. Love this.

I guess the NC-17 is pretty much a spoiler considering the plot synopsis, but the trailer looks great and Steve McQueen (damn it's weird this is his name) is a very talented director. Hunger, though not much thrilling, was a powerful movie, and I have big expectations regarding Shame
