Watch the first official trailer for Marvel's Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd!

01.06.2015

After an ant-size marketing campaign that included a teaser trailer and poster, Marvel has released the first official ANT-MAN trailer! Put away the magnifying glass because there's no need to zoom in on this great footage. Paul Rudd’s superhero movie debut is here! The teaser trailer is more somber than I imagined, especially considering Paul Rudd is involved. It also has the obligatory abs shot of the superhero, in case you were wondering if he was fit enough for the job. While it's not as light as a lot of us expected, it still worked well enough to get me interested.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

While ANT-MAN won't be the biggest Marvel movie this year, that distinction will go to AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, I think it could certainly hold its own thanks to its fun style and humor. I personally don’t know a whole lot about the character, in fact all I needed to know was that Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas were involved and ticket bought. I will stay optimistic while waiting to see the finished result that experienced a rocky start to production; Peyton Reed’s biggest effort yet could be a great addition to the MCU.

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlord but what did you think of the first trailer?

ANT-MAN arrives on July 17, 2015 and also stars Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, and Michael Pena.

strange feelings...

On one hand, this TEASER is not doing much to me... But IT IS just that: a TEASER. I expect the trailer to show the humour we've heard about this film.
On the other hand, I like the smaller scale, not 'end of the world scale' threat, superhero...
Let's wait for the full trailer...

Tl; dr - Marvel allows plenty of artistic expression…within their brand, and that can be a good thing.

I get it. I do. But some of these comments are in many ways typical of the kind of “anti-Marvel” fanboy sentiment that has popped up post-Guardians.

The idea that Marvel couldn’t allow Wright the auteur to do what he wanted with the film is a popular narrative that Wright devotees throw out like chum to get the sharks going, but I’m not sure it really stands up to scrutiny.

I get it.

For example, many folks praise GotG and James Gunn for making a movie that was allowed to breathe and stand on its own in many ways, but conversely claim that Marvel doesn’t allow their filmmakers to breathe artistic life into their films.

So which is it? Does Marvel allow unique artistic expression or not? You can’t have it both ways.
Allow me to share my answer…and since this isn’t a binary proposition, let’s stop with the binary thinking.

Marvel is a brand. Much like Disney is a brand. Marvel allows unique artistic expression within the parameters of their brand, and there is nothing wrong with that. In many ways it can be liberating because it creates a narrative and production support structure that allows filmmakers to thrive.
With Guardians, James Gunn managed to make a very James Gunn-y movie, while still working within brand limitations and in a system that gave him all the tools and support he needed…and it was a heck of a fun movie.

Do we really think James Gunn (who I love, by the way) had any original $700 million grossing movies in him?

You want to talk visuals? Joe Johnston made something with The First Avenger that is (thanks to the time period and inspirations) something visually unique that looks like no other Marvel movie. The aesthetic Kenneth Branagh created for Asgard is unique as well. Joss Whedon’s visual leap from Avengers to Age of Ultron is pretty significant.

Yes Marvel has a visual style, but there is a lot of room to breathe within that style. Yes, Marvel runs their films like serialized television, but isn’t serialized television where all the cool kids are these days? You’ve surely read all the stories over the last few years about the creative death of film and the rise of television? Let’s not knock Marvel for successfully applying the unique traits of the latter to the former.

The buzz seems to be that Marvel wanted more warmth and heart, and Wright didn’t see eye to eye on the changes they wanted. Based on this teaser I can see where Marvel is going with their everyman superhero. Wright isn’t known for making the warmest of films, so I can see where that would be the beginning of the schism.

Will Ant-Man work? I dunno. I thought the teaser was solid but not Earth-shattering…but I’m on board with the cast, and am very interested in seeing the first full trailer.

Cheers!

Good for Rudd. That guy is underrated, eventhough this doesn't look like a movie that would suggest that.

Didn't draw me in. When I think of GOTG's first trailer, its night and day. GOTG's was different, engaging, and set the tone for the what the film was going to be. If that is the case here, it might be a very generic superhero film.

This is why i feel like this teaser was a huge mis-step

comments like this from people who don't know the source material - "so he has ant powers?" "He can ride on bugs?!" makes it sound stupid. they didn't really focus on the strength aspect of the character, which will surely be the best part of the movie. showing him weakly flip one guy then ride on a bug doesn't tell the general public much, so you're getting off on the wrong foot, imo.

all that said, i think the trailer is gonna be insane. I wish the early test footage was just the

I'm not sure about this...

IDK something seems off. Seems like a marvel movie for the early 2000s early 90's. Nothing new here at all, same typical shit. When are we going to get some good marvel villain movie's or kill or some of these goddamn superheros already. Jeez.

Gosh - Im sick and tired of Marvel films. They're all so terribly mediocre and aesthetically, narratively redundant. And this looks to be quite bad.

Why does someone who doesn't like Marvel films in general read an article about a Marvel movie? As most Marvel movies have been popular it seems that they are all simply not to your taste which makes the comment sort of redundant.

Well of course as a movie fanatic, along with everyone else on this website, I have an interest in seeing the trailer for what will likely be one of the biggest films of this year. Additionally, I'm not absolutely opposed to giving this trailer a glance with hopes of it being an original piece of filmmaking that could stand on its own in the Marvel cinematic universe (which is something that GOTG accomplished). Additionally, I'm not absolutely opposed to giving this trailer a glance with hopes of it being an original piece of filmmaking that could stand on its own in the Marvel cinematic universe (which is something that GOTG accomplished). Alas, I should have known better due to Edgar Wright's departure from the project - no doubt due to Marvel's inability to allow directors breath exclusive artistic life into their films. These movies instead feel like something that of a television show. Episodic and as I labeled above - aesthetically redundant. Whats probably more concerning than my negative view of the trailer and the majority of Marvel's films, is your idea that a negative opinion should mean no opinion at all. Aren't we all here to discuss film and offer our thoughts as passionate consumers? Does the popularity of a franchise deem it unfit for criticism? You make it sound as if I am always the first to respond negatively to an article about a Marvel film - which I'll have you know, I don't respond or comment on this site that often (although I visit daily). And that's probably because I know it'll be met with the belligerent thumbs down or the grumbling "well if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!"

hhhmmmmm

i think this movie in essence displays an underdog superhero, he's not spectacular, he doesn't save the world but rather a person, not too superpowered and skillful, but yet he's still a hero. i liked it because this time is not about big league superhero, rather a common man who's a hero for someone, not for everyone.

Comparing to Marvel movies as of late, Ant-Man reminds me of how small scale the first Iron Man movie was way back in 2008. It came out and blew everyone away. Hopefully Ant-Man can do the same.

Marvel dropped the ball a big on this one. With a character like Ant-Man, they really should have played up the humor. However, this film has had a bit of a troubled production and likely, Marvel doesn't have a lot of solid, polished footage to throw in first trailer. Hopefully the next trailer will have some more action and humor. I agree, the trailer is a bit of a let down but I will remain optimistic.

This looks blah and generic, just like all of Peyton Reed's other movies. Getting rid of Edgar Wright because his version of Ant-Man didn't tie into the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe was a terrible idea. Marvel/Disney should be ashamed of themselves. Not everything has to be part of a shared universe. There's already like 14 Avengers in the MCU anyway, did Marvel really need to ruin the Ant-Man movie just so that the character can show up in Avengers 3? These shared universes are really

For a teaser trailer, it did its job greatly. I was a bit upset when Edgar Wright left the project but this trailer is very reassuring that Ant-Man will do just fine.

Preferred the tiny version.

Interesting choice to hold off on showing any real action to get an idea of his powers. Then there's the one line at the end to remind us there'll be snarky humour. There might well be a fun movie in there but I'm not sure the trailer really portrays that.

A pretty underwhelming trailer to say the least and at times, really looks like a made for TV film. For a movie titled, Ant Man, Marvel really should have brought the goods to sell people on this thing.

You didn't think Iron Man 2(and 3 if you ask me, but I know I'm a minority in that regard), the incredible hulk, the first Captain America and Thor 2 were real misfires? Loved the 2 movies they did last year and I will keep on watching all their stuff, because I love how it's all interconnected. But that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend every movie they've done so far was good.

I didn't think the first Captain America was a real misfire. I enjoyed the old-fashioned storytelling and tone, which was consistent. And it showed Chris Evans effectively shedding his goofball image he developed in the Fantastic Four movies and other films.

I find the first Thor to be more of a misfire than the first Cap. While it may have introduced us to the rockstar that is Tom Hiddleston, it kept awkwardly bouncing back between a S.H.I.E.L.D. procedural and a mythological

With regards to this, I think he's suggesting this will be the first MCU film to have a Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I myself would like to see a little more. As of now, I'm not totally impressed. It's probably the tone of this trailer, but Paul Rudd doesn't strike me as a thief that should be taken seriously. The tone doesn't suit Paul Rudd at all. Perhaps the next trailer will showcase a more fitting tone.

I liked it. I wasn't expecting much with this "teaser". I think something is interesting that a lot of people are over looking is that he has a child. He's the first avenger in the MCU that has one. This will play on his humanity differently than it does for others. I doubt we'll be seeing an ant man 2 for a long time but I believe he'll be the heart of the avengers when he joins. He has more to fight for than the others.

underwhelming would be an understatement

Where was the humor? It's ant-man for crying out loud! I think we can all safely say this is probably nothing like the movie Wright had in mind. I'll watch it of course. But I have a sneaky suspicion this going to be more akin to Iron Man than say Captain America 2.

The trailer was nothing special and how excited would any of us be to watch it if this wasn't a Marvel movie? But wait...it is a Marvel movie...a studio that has earned the right to some faith (especially off the back of their last two movies alone) - pretty much everything they've touched has done well - even Agents of Shield has got a lot (lot) better. So there is no reason whatsoever (Edgar Wright leaving included) to think that this won't be another fun Marvel entry.

Hugely underwhelming - for a lesser known character in the marvel world I fear this one might be the one that stalls the marvel juggernauts even if only temporarily, not much in the trailer to get excited for and Rudd looks extremely bored. Typical eternal optimism from the soloist too!

Well I feel some context is needed here. For me even the not so good Marvel films are at least entertaining and this looks fun. The character comes with a level of cheese when adapting to the big screen that they are clearly grappling with and they seem to be walking the line quite well. I feel we have to be fair in our expectation of pulling off such a complicated character. If they get him well established and then surprise us with a killer sequal I will be more than happy. I'm gonna get some thumbs down I'm sure, but so unimpressed with that. I admit I never liked the character of Ant Man. It always was the lamest character on the block for me. I figured it would be difficult to translate on screen and not make it look corny. I was afraid we were going to be seeing Honey I shrunk the Kids 3 or 4 or whatever they got up to. Basically they made this look like a serious version of that. I love Paul Rudd and it was so inspired to cast him, but god does he ever look

Basically they made this look like a serious version of that. I love Paul Rudd and it was so inspired to cast him, but god does he ever look bored in this. I will see this, but almost because I feel obligated to because of the MCU connections. Still can't say I'm looking forward to it.

Looks bland, generic, looks like nobody involved seems to be into it, just collecting the paycheck and honoring a legally binding contract. I'm not sure what the big issues were between Marvel and Edgar Wright and I'm not trying to knock Peyton Reed for being a company man or a bland director, but...this was just so meh.

Meh

I was hoping to get goosebumps like every other Marvel trailer. Maybe next time. Fingers crossed.

"I, for one, welcome our new insect overload"

Is no one going to acknowledge the awesomeness of that "Simpsons" reference?

I rather enjoyed the trailer, but, as someone already pointed out, my expectations were rather low.

Gotta say... Got me excited.

I really like that we are getting an Ant-Man movie, with the troubled production and years spent on pause it's almost hard to believe they actually made it, because it's Ant-Man. If Marvel pulls this off and it's a hit (safe bet?) it proves that anything is possible, they are making Ant-Man movies now.

Whoever edited this trailer should've stuck with the sentimental drive it builded in the first half, or gone balls to the wall the entire time with the action-ish montage it ended with. Seems like they started to build something meaningful then bailed out to show it's an action movie. Poorly cut trailer, but I don't think that says anything about the movie. Still looking forward to this.

I'm in bc of Rudd, and his views on how ridiculous it is. But this looks pretty ridiculous. Entire plot spelled out. Basic bitch of superhero movies

The poster is funny... i expected a more tongue in cheek and comical trailer... the final line was funny... but i wanted more funny, less serious... this was the opposite!

hopefully it's just the trailer...

it seemed generic. like something Sony or Fox would make. come on Marvel, you're better than this.

"I think it could certainly hold its own thanks to its fun style and humor."

did we see the same trailer?

*sigh* Looks as bland and boring as any other Marvel movie.

It's a shame. Could've been something special.
THE ONE POSITIVE THING - THE FATE OF THE WORLD ISN'T AT STAKE. Man is that getting old. Everything's gotta be biggerer and betterer.

Thor, Thor 2, Iron-Man 2, Last act of Captain America, Last act of Captain America 2, Avengers in hindsight.

Then Amazing Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men First Class, Last act of Wolverine.

A bit underwhelming, but that's okay. I haven't set the bar that high for this movie.

I won't say this trailer blew me away. I will say it made me realize something: Scott Lang will be, I think, the first Avenger to be a father.

Good Point! Not just the Avengers, but the first major superhero I think. Except maybe The Punisher and Superman Returns, but those were different circumstances.

It was a solid teaser. The cast will make this interesting to watch, but my biggest concerns are how the action scenes will play out. The test footage was neat, but not sure how it will play out in a full movie.
Does ant-man also increase in size instead of shrink? I don't read the comics, but I thought I read that somewhere.

You are correct, to an extent. In the comics, Hank Pym could grow, as well as shrink in size, and went by the alias "Giant-Man". I don't think Scott Lang ever took up the mantle though.

he's going to fly on the backs of giant ants. that's how it'll escalate.

My prediction: There will be a scene near the end, maybe even one of the credits scenes, where Rudd will accidentally discover that the suit will not only make him small, but large..which leads to the use of both his AntMan and GiantMan personas in Avengers 3.

Eh.....nothing to get me too excited at all. This is the first Marvel trailer that didn't get me all that interested in running out to see it. Maybe the others trailers will be better but at the moment it just feels so assembly line.

I'm not a fan of the concept.....

....but the trailer made me want to see more, so maybe the movie will turn out to be a pleasant surprise (ala GOTG). I thought Rudd looked great in it, Douglass seemed perfectly over-serious (to Rudd's not taking it seriously). I really liked the angle with his daughter. It was honestly touching and made me wonder if this won't be the most fully fleshed-out Marvel film yet.

The tone

Just seemed really off to me. It was strange to see Paul Rudd whom I really enjoy not come off as charismatic at all. Wish he played it more like Role Models personally.

So so

IMHO I think it'll be a good movie, but nowhere near a MOS OR Avengers quality movie. I wish we could have seen Wright's version though.

That trailer was..... so so. Looks fun, but nothing is wowing me yet. Agree with the soloist on the cast though. I really hope that its as good as some of Marvel's recent hits, because I feel like many of these actors could potentially knock it out of the park and get some long overdue credit.

YES!

This was a great trailer! Most of the scenes were interested in seeing are still having CGI work done so they're not finished.

My one complaint is that this wasn't a very well edited trailer, some shots were completely pointless (the shot of the trees/bushes before Hank Pym turns on the lights in his workshop) and the pacing was off a bit but still excited for this!

cautiously optimistic

Slightly underwhelming, but not wholly disappointing. Looks pretty cool, albeit a little corny. Glad they had some tongue-in-cheek moments in there. I would've liked to see less shots of cars driving down the road and more of the actual plot or action.

From what was shown, the film looks like a lot of fun and definitely something fresh that we haven't seen before. Just glad we are getting being introduced to a new comic book hero and having some new blood in the MCU.

The scenes of Lang as the size of an Ant should be a lot of fun in how they actually use that style and idea towards the progression of the story and film.

Really hope the film turns out to be good for Rudd's sake. His casting is too inspired for the film to be anything

Love Rudd, but by this trailer, this film looks exactly like every single generic superhero origin film to date. Beat for beat

Maybe some of it. But I like the small scope of the film where it's not up to him to save the world this time around.

damn...

I hate to say it... but I'm finally underwhelmed by Marvel. I love Paul Rudd and will still be there opening weekend, but my anticipation went down a little after seeing this trailer... Hopefully the next one kicks ass!

That's what happens when you care more about your shared universe, and less about making a good movie. They should never have fired Edgar Wright.
