Watch the full 6-minute single shot take from HBO's True Detective!

02.11.2014

SPOILER WARNING

On Sunday night I sat on my couch, biting my nails in anxious excitement over HBO's True Detective, particularly the last six minutes of the show, which were done in a single take shot. It's so flawlessly executed that I didn't even realize it until it was three minutes into the sequence and the stakes kept rising and rising into a boiling kettle of intensity that rivals the very best of what cinema could ever offer. Director Cary Fukunaga (JANE EYRE, SIN NOMBRE) spoke to MTV about the 6-minute take, elaborating on the process to make it happen, saying that with the best oners "you don't even realize that they're oners. They're the most first-person experience you can get in a film."

In the fourth episode of the show, entitled "Who Goes There" (our review here) McConaughey's Det. Rust Cohle is in deep cover, pulling off a heist with a group of motorcycle gang thugs when the situation escalates into a violent shootout and escape. It's one of the most intense and lengthy one-shot takes that easily rivals that of standard bearers like Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma, Wes Anderson, and Alfonso Cuaron.

"We had ADs [assistant directors] all over the neighborhood because we had to release extras, crowd running background, police cars, stunt drivers. There were actual gun shots and stones being thrown through windows. There were a lot of things to put together," Fukunaga said. "Even the action, the stunt sequences were complicated. We're working on a television schedule. It isn't like a film where you can spend a lot of time working the stunts out with the actors. We only had a day and a half to get Matthew and everyone else on the same page."

Check out the full shot:

HBO's True Detective is on Sunday nights at 9 PM. If you're not watching, it's time to get on it.

Extra Tidbit: As True Detective is an anthology series, what actors would you like to see in future seasons? A few names on my list consist of Kurt Russell, Thomas Jane, Amy Ryan, Idris Elba, and Bryan Cranston. What about you?

Brilliant

This scene will be picked apart for years to come.

I somewhat hope that they aren't planning an anthology series. I have a hard time thinking that they'll be able to keep up the momentum for more than one season; this season is just too good to be outdone.

GTA 5 True Detectives!

I watched the full episode 3 times already just for that sequence....SO AMAZING. It reminded me of GTA 5. I'm blown away that was all filmed in one take. I can't wait for episode 5!

The potential for this show can only go up

I'd love for the next season to either take a note from David Fincher's Se7en and have one detective entering and the other trying to retire. Some detectives I'd love to see would be: Oldman, Swinton, Elba, Fassbender, Pitt, Penn, Pacino, Norton, and Downey Jr. Also, I'd love if the next season took place in LA or Seattle.

I would love to see

Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender team up in a show like this. The talent would literally fly out of the screen. McConaughey is killing it all already so whoever does fill in next season has MASSIVE shoes to fill.

It'll never happen but I'd like to see something set in Japan with the Yakuza thrown in.

That was an incredible scene. I actually went back and rewatched the shot from the beginning once I realized it was all one take. It was just so different for the show and such an incredible achievement on television. We don't usually get these kinds of shots, but it made for some very intense moments. Gets me eager for next week's episode.

Truly, Incredible.

This show is erasing any memory of Breaking Bad.
Matthew and Woody are killing it.

True Detective is the best show on TV

I love it not just for the cinematic quality brought to the small screen (nice to see again since Breaking Bad is gone) or the performances by Harrelson and (especially) McConaughey but the way the show makes perfect use of strong character actors like Clarke Peters to create really three-dimensional performances with depth with only one scene of dialogue.

I look forward to next season. The Wire fan in me wants Idris Elba and Amy Ryan as the leads honestly. That, and I'd like to see a female

I look forward to next season. The Wire fan in me wants Idris Elba and Amy Ryan as the leads honestly. That, and I'd like to see a female lead in a gritty drama like this which is so often fueled by testosterone and ruminations about the nature of being a man (even if True Detective is subverting those themes to an extent).

Affleck/Damon

Will probably never happen, but I think Ben Affleck and Matt Damon would be an inspiring match up. Would be their first all-out 2 hander since GOOD WILL HUNTING.
