A lot of buzz has been generated for the Ryan Gosling/Bradley Cooper starrer THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES from director Derek Cianfrance. Some compare it to an arthouse thriller, others a pulpy crime pic, but either way it's definitely got some heat. Our own review called it the best movie of 2013 so far, so there's that. I still have yet to see the film, as it's opened in limited release currently, but am looking forward to catching it when it hits my neck of the, er, pines.

So, today we have a look at the opening of the film, which carries on the tradition of long tracking shots with no breaks. The scene follows Gosling from one location to the next and if you have no idea what the movie is about or where it's going then there's certainly some suspense there. If nothing else, it's just a nice use of a traditional aesthetic.

Let's take a walk, shall we?:

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendez, and Dane DeHaan, is currently playing in limited release.  It opens in the UK on April 12, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Gosling should make a "retro jacket" trilogy. Next up? The obvious choice; Knight Rider. Winding-Refn, Gosling as Michael Knight, and a souped up K.I.T.T. with an '80's soundtrack and some ultraviolence thrown in for good measure. Let's hear your idea for a third part in the trilogy...

Looks great, but I don't think that's a tracking shot. Camera seems to be shaking too much to be a steadicam. I'd label it as just an extended take. Love 'em either way though.

Hope this isn't some pretentious, overrated stuff like Drive.why some directors try to show off their shot taking? So that they can be cinsidered as some clever artsy directors? Tracking shot or whatever? Is this something new and groundbreaking shot? Lots of directors did this shot since Touch of evil and The shining.in many cases, except for boasting that they did a tracking shot,it doesn't help the story and character development.

So nobody should ever use an extended tracking/steadicam shot because morons like you think it's pretentious? The opening shot in Pines is used to establish atmosphere. Drive wasn't pretentious. It had style. Stick to commenting on G.I. Joe movies.
