Watchmen deal details

01.17.2009

Comic fans are thrilled that the imbroglio between Warner Bros. and Fox has been resolved, and we'll see the epic WATCHMEN on its intended release date.

While specifics of the agreement were to be confidential, nothing remains a secret for long. So if you want to know if it was worth Fox's effort, this should be a good indication:

Fox gets an "upfront cash payment that sources pegged between $5 million and $10 million."

Fox gets "a gross participation in WATCHMEN that scales between 5% and 8.5%, depending on the film’s worldwide revenues."

Fox gets to participate "as a gross player in any sequels and spinoffs."

Warner Bros. gets to release the movie on time, and without Fox's logo. Doesn't really seem an even trade, but I was never great with math.

Whew. Let's hope the audience is the real winner...

Extra Tidbit: If you're wondering why Fox was suddenly so hellbent on getting some dough out of WB for this, here are a few possible reasons: MEET DAVE, SPACE CHIMPS, BABYLON AD, MEET THE SPARTANS, THE HAPPENING, AVP: REQUIEM, MAX PAYNE, the upcoming DRAGONBALL...

I agree with you too.

However, I'm just happy that we will watch the Watchmen on March.

After RE-Reading this book for the millionth time and the fifth time since the film was announced I relized that this spits in the face of what Alan Moore was trying to accomplish...and the true meaning of the book. It was to show you that comicbooks can do something that no other format can do. thus making it one of the best medias out there. the more and more I grasp Moores point in making the book, the less and less excited for it I am...

not to mention that the first few trailers, used a song that was made JUST FOR BATMAN & ROBIN as a backer track.

and it just brought back floods of bad memories.

so in a way, to sum up, I am no longer excited for this film.

let the blood ginning begin!

Always try to get gross

"One thing that amazes me though is that they got points on the gross, not the net,"

@gayzilla: most smart people try to get points on the gross, not the net, because studios have a long history of being able to justify not paying anything out after taxes. Look up "Buchwald v. Paramount" and "Hollywood accounting" for more information.

I second the man's notion! These guys manage to ruin the most promising films. Let their films flop (talking to you Wolverine fans) so they ditch their rights to those properties and have another studio take a stab at it.

Fuck fox, and fuck Tom Rothman indeed.

While I HATE the fact that Fox will profit off this movie...

I'm just glad this shit is over with and we can march on to 03.06.09 without problems.

couldnt agree with you more my friend!

Fox is the biggest piece of shit in the biz today, and that doesnt take in account their false news and horridly disgusting biased programs

that shows in the way they conduct film business. Theyre like that kid in the group who's a know-it-all but, in fact, knows jack shit about anything. Im surprised theyre still around.

Anyone in the film business who values art and quality (like theyre supposed to) over money needs to take a stand against

at least WB pulled one over on fox with the spinoff/sequel thing. i don't think the black freighter will count as a spinoff.

Thank God it's over. At the end of the day, Fox is still a shitty studio that prefers stealing money from other studio, rather than making (good) movies. I hope they bancrupt soon...

Fuck Tom Rothman

Fox is the guy who beats up girls and then wonders why they keep calling the cops on him, or simply breaking up. They think they give their actors and directors tough love by telling them how to make their movies better while handing over lots of money.

Fox needs to get their fucking head on straight and realize that businessmen are not artists. Statistics are not always representative, and the public is not as predictable as you think. I loved The Dark Knight, but no one could've convinced

Fox needs to get their fucking head on straight and realize that businessmen are not artists. Statistics are not always representative, and the public is not as predictable as you think. I loved The Dark Knight, but no one could've convinced me that its box office would come close to Titanic's, not until I saw it for myself. And I tend to think better of peoples' tastes, so just think what condescending studio executives (especially at Fox) thought of TDK. If you want Fox's perspective on superhero films, just look at Fantastic Four versus every other studios superhero films.

Fox tries too hard to control their films to make them what they think the public wants and it is officially coming back to bite them in the ass. Fox plays very very dirty, and someone needs to do something about it. There shouldn't be an actor's strike, there should be an actor's boycott against Fox. There it is, the campaign name: FUCK FOX.

I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that the Star Wars animated film didn't come out through Fox. I don't know why, it may be completely unrelated, it just struck me now as being an odd think that this is the first Star Wars film EVER to not come out through Fox.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Tales of the Black Freighter and possibly Under the Hood are what they had in mind as fan as spinoffs. I don't think anybody's going to try to make a Watchmen 2.

Unless the author signs an incredibly loose contract, you typically have to get the their permission (and sign a new contract) in order to create original material (i.e. sequels) based off of their work. I don't see Alan Moore doing that.

I'm wondering if the TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER DVD will be considered a spin-off?

Absent is any mention of Home Video, which is where WB can really make their profit, especially if the Black Frieghter thing is released on video same time as theatrical release. One thing that amazes me though is that they got points on the gross, not the net, which is really unheard-of, but hey, we won't have to see the fox logo.

AVP:R

No, AVP:R wasn't a commercial failure. Just a failure that made lots of money. That movie was garbage...

Oh yeah. Watchmen. Can't wait.

Sequels??

I just finished reading the graphic novel and I won't give away the ending. But I will agree with kieliaowe when I say that I have NO idea how a sequel would be possible without butchering the ending of the book...this worries me.

Then again, in the original book featuring John Rambo, John was supposed to kick the bucket. Obviously they changed the ending hugely for the movie and there are now three sequels to date. So we'll see what happens, yes?
