Watchmen runtime

12.04.2008

As WATCHMEN slowly arrives, we're getting some more information on the film's runtime through director Zack Snyder and his wife, producer Deborah Snyder, who says "We're getting really close... We're at two hours and thirty five minutes." However, there will also be a director's cut version of the film that features the movie within a movie, TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER.

"The Black Freighter version of the movie that we're working on--which has the ins and outs of the Black Freighter comic book woven through it, with an animated version of the Black Freighter--will be about three hours and 40 minutes... So there's a huge epic version of Watchmen, which will probably come out after the movie's theatrical release, for hardcore [fans]."

I know most of you are wetting your pants over this thing, and believe me I am too. Jackie Earle Haley's Rorschach voice makes me wish he played Batman (wow, that's gonna hurt my inbox). But I am concerned at how everything seems to be in slow motion. I'm worried when we say two and a half hours we actually mean half an hour super slowed down.

Extra Tidbit: Also, I don't understand why people complain about movie lengths being too long. If it's something that is obviously gonna suck ass like MAID IN MANHATTAN or something, yeah keep that shit trim. But in something that will so obviously own, I don't care if it's four hours. Hell I would LIKE that.

Amen on this movie length issue. The longer the better.

How many people went to see the whole LOTR extended trilogy, back to back, in the theater? I know I did, and loved every second of it.

Chill the F out, y'all

I totally agree. That the Comic book is great but I don't feel the vibe of the movie @ all. And i'm afraid i'm not making myself more popular by saying that I wasn't impress by the dark knight. Heath Ledger was great but the rest just dull. Normally I thought Christian Bale was great in every single movie I saw. But I prefer Michael Keaton as Batman. Batman returns still being my favorite of the franchise. And I know every single one of you has a movie he doesn't like even though all the

I hope to god this is gonna be an excellent movie. If a Batman flick can be one of the best movies we've ever seen, then the best graphic novel ever written gone Hollywood better top that!

Usually when I see Thoo's name on an article I know not to read the last paragraph because it will just be a drawn out, self-indulgent, generally unfunny joke, but I have to agree with him on this.

The whole freaking trailer is in slow motion. I now can't picture a film with these characters moving at regular speed. I'm going to go into the theater expecting a two and a half hour Smashing Pumpkins video.

I was real excited when stuff started coming together and it looked like it was not

If you're going to make a movie to please fans of the source material, you have to acknowledge that your movie will never be considered as good as the source material. To say you want to surpass it is going to turn off its fans, and rightly so. In that case, why make a movie at all?

That runtime rocks! Make it 3hours, 4, 5...who cares! Lord Of The Rings Extended was so awesome that I could watch it over and over despite its ridiculously long runtime!

This is gonna get brutal

Just imagine watching the scene where he eats a raw seagull. Man, that's extreme. Tales of the Black Freighter is what Pirates of the Caribbean should've been.

Fatwomanizer, sorry I came off so harsh in my first post. I just meant that if you're wondering what the big deal is about a book, comic, etc. why not check it out for yourself?

I agree that Watchmen is by far the best comic ever written (it was originally a limited series rather than a graphic novel) and certainly the best superhero oriented graphic novel, but I don't think I'd say it's the greatest graphic novel ever (although it's certainly one of the al-time best). In my opinion that title would go to Maus, which is one of the best novels ever written about the holocaust. To me this is the medium at it's peak, a story that transcends being a "graphic novel" or "comic book" and is simply an astonishing piece of literature. It's also the only graphic novel to ever win a Pulitzer Prize.

wallebe10...

Yes, the entire point of his post was that he has read the comic and doesn't understand why people are leaping for joy at something that looks like a vapid, dumbed down version of truly great source material.

At least that's what I got out of it.

...And that's how I feel about it, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

Man I'd love to see the Black Freighter version. The dead body boat would be awesome.

And I love long run times when its helping the movie and not dragging it out. Do it "Roots" style if you have to lets cover all the aspects and leave nothing out.

That pic makes me think of Monica Belluci. Anyone?

THE Simple Solution to Runtimes

INTERMISSION!

Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia and others all clocked in with significant times. 5 minutes to drain the bladder, refill the soda and back in your seat. Any movie over 3 hours should have a break. I wished there was one during Return of the King but I tied it in a knot and troopered it out. So, HELL yes, make Watchmen 5 hours long. I don't want to wait for the DVD extended version but there will be one any way.

Watchmen will be next year's Dark Knight in terms of being overrated

I really liked the graphic novel, although the last chapter sucked because of how little discussion there was between the characters about whether or not to tell people the truth. To me, that chapter played out like a comic book but the rest of the book was better than a comic book.

As for the movie, I will wait for dvd and watch both versions. I have no desire to see this in the theaters. Especially, considering who the director is, this guy is completely talentless in my opinion.

I liked the 300 graphic novel but the movie version was terrible because of this guy's directing and his added subplot. I won't make the same mistake again and waste my time seeing another one of his movies in the theater.

I have a feeling Watchmen will be the most overrated movie of next year, just like The Dark Knight was this year. I'm a huge fan of Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale but their Batman movies have been really bad in my opinion. They pretend to be so realistic and serious but the completely ridiculous and dumb plot elements and characterization completely undermines the tone they were going for, making it impossible for me to take any of it seriously or even be entertained by it. It's a juvenile attempt to make a superhero movie for intellectuals.

Fatwomanizer, the majority of comic book fans consider this one of the best (some would say THE BEST) the medium's ever produced. It's been in development hell for the past 20 years and now it's mere monthes away from release. That's what has everyone so excited. If you still don't get it you can always read the graphic novel.

And Thoo, yeah I agree that Haley would have been awesome as Batman's voicr, but can you really see him as Bruce Wayne? Haley is a tremendous actor but he's not a

Last time I heard, what happened to 2 hours and 43 minutes in theatres with a 3 hours and 10 minutes director's cut?

My opinion, as is everyone else's here it seems - for Watchmen: the longer, the fucking better.

For the most part, every director's cut I've seen has been an improvement upon the original, shorter releases. But like others have said, use whatever run time is necessary for the story. Plus, who doesn't want more movie for their money.

But it is about attention spans. I saw an advanced screening of Benjamin Button and thought it was phenomenal. It's also almost 3 hours long. Like Thoo said, I could have watched another hour and I'm pumped for the epic director's cut Watchmen. But when I got back to my comp and checked out early reviews of the flick, everyone was complaining about the long runtime. Not a valid argument in my eyes, judge a film on its quality and not how long it goes.

It's not about attention spans.

As others have said, it's about the number of showtimes. I don't care if a movie is approaching four hours ("Lawrence of Arabia") or is merely 90 minutes ("Punch-Drunk Love"). The running time should be whatever works for the movie. Longer does not by definition equal better (See the extended version of "The Two Towers" if you doubt that. Lots of fluff, little substance).

Thank God Fox doesn't have this movie

Or else the runtime would be 100 minutes and PG-13. I read on the internet that Tom Rothman (the head of Fox) wants all of his movies to be under two hours to fit in more showtimes. What an asshole.

Longer running times are not liked by theaters due to them being able to screen a movie less times per day.

So when they say they're getting really close, do they mean they're close to cutting the runtime down or add to it? I hope it's the latter because WATCHMEN definitely deserves a long runtime.

Let all the people with short attention spans stay at home and watch EPIC MOVIE.

LENGTH AND SUCCESS

Let's see
Titanic: Near Three Hours
Lord Of The Rings: Near Three Hours
Dark Knight: A little over two and a half hours.

What do all these have in common.
UBER SUCCESS.

Why does Hollywood not look inward and stop trying to please the idiots who can't concentrate for over 90 minutes?
