Weekend Box-Office: April 1-3, 2011

Apr. 3, 2011by: JoBlo

Hop has biggest opening of the year!

Despite many of you believing that SOURCE CODE would beat HOP to the #1 spot this weekend, it was the Russell Brand-(voice)-starring animated Easter flick that topped the charts this weekend, not only beating out SOURCE CODE and INSIDIOUS, the two other new releases of the week, but matching the $38M record opening for 2011, which was set by RANGO just a few weeks ago. Needless to say, nobody would be terribly surprised if the animated "Easter Bunny" movie kept shoveling in the dollars until Easter rolls around at the end of this month. Unfortunately for "Hollywood", overall revenues in 2011 have been 20% less than in 2010 at this point of the year. No AVATAR or CLASH OF THE TITANS this year.

Both SOURCE CODE and INSIDIOUS scored a rare coup on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, which aggregate all critics' reviews of films, scoring higher than 60% respectively (CODE actually scored closer to 90%), which is extremely rare for either science-fiction or horror movies. Only time will tell if either film will be able to keep the dollars rolling in over the coming weeks, but neither movie cost too much on its own, so hopefully we can consider them both to be "successful", so that Hollywood doesn't stop making ORIGINAL movies every now and then as well.

For anyone scoring at home, it's to note that the PG-13 version of THE KING'S SPEECH opened in over 1,000 theaters this past weekend, but only managed about $1,100/per theater (compared to HOP's $10,600/per theater) and ended up with $1.2M overall. That was enough to place it in 14th place during this past weekend. I think it's time to move on from this film at this point, no?

Last week's #2 movie, SUCKER PUNCH -- which is dividing audiences around the world including our own MOVIE FAN CENTRAL community (it's average score is 6.3/10 after 18 reviews, despite a couple of members scoring it 10/10 and a couple of others scoring it 2/10) -- dropped down to #7 this weekend, with the biggest % drop of the weekend (it lost 68% of its audience from last weekend). Last week's #1 movie, THE DIARY OF A WIMPY KID REVISITED, also dropped a substantial amount from last weekend (58%), yet managed to hang around in the top 5 in fourth place.

The 3 films to get booted from the top 10 this week include THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU ($59M), RED RIDING HOOD ($36M) and MARS NEEDS MOMS ($20M), which has turned into the biggest money-loser of the year with a budget of $150M! Wow.

Next weekend sees the release of four more major movies including Russell Brand's attempt at scoring two #1 movies in a row with a remake of ARTHUR (which between me and you, looks like shite - rent the original), SOUL SURFER, a true-life tale about a girl surfer with a missing arm co-starring Dennis Quaid, as well as two fun-looking movies including HANNA, which someone in our JoBlo.com crew has already seen and recommended highly, as well as YOUR HIGHNESS, a stoner medieval comedy starring Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman's ass. Which film do you think will be #1 next weekend? VOTE HERE!!!

Sigh

No surprise there. Blame it on all the parents and their children. These are the very same people who allowed to make the Chipmunk movies make so much money!

Didn't expect it to score that high. Oh well, at least May is just a month away.

It's weird that you guys did not review this movie at all. I know kid's movies might not be the average joblo readers cup of tea but Hop is funnier and a lot smarter than the average family film. Besides, you guys reviewed Gnomeo & Juliet for no real reason and that didn't look any better.

My bad. I was going to check it out Wednesday, but I got my ass kicked by a bad flu.

We try and review every film coming out, but sometimes there are no advance press screenings in the cities in which our reviewers reside, or we post them up the week after opening, so that they can watch it over the weekend.

But yeah, sometimes we'll skip certain films because they're not targeted our core audience (see DIARY OF A WIMPY KID, etc...).

I actually saw Mars Needs Moms... I enjoyed it, pretty shocked to hear it's doing so badly. I didn't know a thing about it before seeing it so there ya go, marketing.

I'm so at your highness this weekend :)

Unfortunately, Arthur will probably be #1 next week. Not thanks to me tho - my money will go to Hanna and Your Highness.

I saw Source Code and thought it was brilliant (not as good as Moon, but I hardly expected it could be). I really hope it becomes profitable so that Duncan Jones can keep getting budgets to make his movies with.

Halfway there after one weekend isn't bad, so I really hope it can keep that up.

King's speech pg13

the rating did nothing in correlation to the receipts. Weinstein looks like an idiot, and directors making arthouse will probably be hesitant to work with him.

Not surprising

Hop is for the kiddies and parents probably made it a family outing, which means selling more tickets. Me and the wife saw Source Code, and we both LOVED it. She is pretty touch on sci-fi sometimes, but she really enjoyed it. I hope it does well overall. It was so nice to see a fresh, original movie with brains, characters that you care about, and a great story.

Man, the first quarter of 2011 seems to be dominated by kids movies: Gnomeo & Juliet, Rango, Wimpy Kid, Hop. All looked awful, with the exception of Rango. I guess parents will take their kids to see any crappy cgi or animated movie. No wonder the intelligence level of kids in this country is on a downward slope.

Maybe because there aren't any 3d movies out yet? Wait until this summer, 3D mania will hit a theater near you...

A bunch of little kids saw an Easter Bunny movie this weekend. I don't see why that should fucking bother anyone.

With what I've heard about Source Code, though, I wish it would have opened a little better. Maybe it'll grow some legs.

By definition, the whole crop can't be cream. If I was 5, I'd still take a Hop over nothing at all. In fact I know I often thoroughly approved of worse. When critics claim Hop a classic, call me.

I'm all for good kid movies, but with the exception of Rango none of them seemed to be getting good reviews. Maybe I'm crazy, but when I grew up (late 80's/early 90's) there seemed to be fewer kid/animated films. Now it seems like there's a new one every other week, and we can all agree they aren't all the cream of the crop.

Yeah I don't get why so many people are butthurt about kiddie movies doing well. When they were kids, they were into the EXACT same stuff.

I'm a little sad that mediocre family films are dominating, but I think the Source Code numbers are good, which is a great thing.

I saw Insidious

And I think word of mouth will keep it atleast in the top 3. People were coming out of the theatre breathless, and some even saying its the best horror film theyve seen, I have to say its up there with The Shining, Exorcist and Poltergeist for me! Go see it!

Soul Surfer

Okay, seriously JoBlo...I have no intent on seeing it, but saying next week's release "Soul Surfer" is about a surfer missing an arm? It's the real life story of a 13 year old surfer girl who got it TAKEN OFF BY A SHARK while surfing...only to get back on the board a small time later and still be one of the best in the world. I mean, a little more than just that? Seriously? :)

I am shocked that more 13-16 year olds didn't run out to see the PG-13 version of the King's Speech!

Your Highness

Why is this a stoner comedy exactly? Is it because the retarded brother smoked a pipe and the camera went sideways as he chased some livestock? That term sure is used loosely nowadays.

Maybe because the decision on the final title was Your HIGHness. Coincidence?

No, I'm pretty sure it is officially trying to be the first medieval stoner comedy. From what I can tell they aren't exactly aiming for subtlety here.
