Weekend Box-Office: April 13-15, 2012

Hunger Games starve the Stooges!

The odds may not ever be in favor of THE HUNGER GAMES, but after four weeks those odds are still looking pretty good.

Three new wide releases arrived in theaters this weekend, but Katniss slayed them all and climbed the pile of bodies with another $21.5 million for THE HUNGER GAMES, bringing the domestic total to an impressive $337M and crossing the $500M mark in global figures. With the departure of director Gary Ross, Lionsgate is currently searching for a replacement to bring them similar success with the sequel CATCHING FIRE. No pressure there!

Nyuk nyuk nyuk. While the Farrelly Brothers didn't have any notable names portraying their buffoon trio, they did benefit from the brand recognition of THE THREE STOOGES, and the slapstick flick managed a second place finish with $17.1 million. That number obviously might have been higher if the revival had gone ahead with the Farrellys' original planned cast of Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn and Jim Carrey. But then, the budget also would've surely been higher than the $30M that the no-star version reportedly cost.

After being stuck in a vault for a couple of years, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS finally made it to screens and scared up $14.8 million. The R-rated horror movie, from Joss Whedon and his "Buffy"/"Angel" comrade Drew Goddard, was filmed in 2009 (before star Chris Hemsworth wielded the hammer of THOR) but fell victim to studio MGM's financial woes before Lionsgate grabbed it. Lionsgate probably didn't figure they would have to compete with their own release THE HUNGER GAMES after a month, but it still probably feels good to have two movies in the top three...

The other new wide release, the Luc Besson-produced sci-fi actioner LOCKOUT, got jettisoned into the void of ninth place with just $6.2 million, putting it behind several other movies that have been in theaters for quite a while (including 21 JUMP STREET, still strong after five weeks). It doesn't look like we'll be seeing the return of Guy Pearce's Space Plissken a la Besson's TRANSPORTER.

The 3D reissue of TITANIC is keeping afloat better than the actual boat (or AMERICAN REUNION, for that matter), netting another $11.6M for a $44.4M total. But as filmmaker James Cameron has stated, the re-release was really more for the benefit of audiences in various overseas territories, where there are now many more theaters than when the movie first set sail fifteen years ago. Looks like he was right -- TITANIC 3D has brought in another $150M or so globally. Between the reissue's ticket sales and the original 1997 release, the movie has generated over $2 billion at the box office, joining Cameron's own AVATAR as the only other movie to do so.

Speaking of seaworthy vessels and international crowds, the US won't get the big-budget board-game adaptation of BATTLESHIP until May 18th, but the movie has already opened this weekend in various other territories, and Taylor Kitsch's fight to free the oceans of extreterrestrial invaders has brought in around $60M.

This week is also a vacation from school for much of America's youth, so dwindling movies like MIRROR MIRROR, WRATH OF THE TITANS and THE LORAX could have one last gasp from kiddies and teens desperate for theatrical entertainment before the summer movie season officially kicks off in a couple of weeks with THE AVENGERS.

Next week brings the Zac Efron romance THE LUCKY ONE as the biggest release, along with the comedy THINK LIKE A MAN and Disney's primate documentary CHIMPANZEE. Plus there's the IMAX-only documentary TO THE ARCTIC. Unless the ladies come out in full force for Efron, the odds could be in THE HUNGER GAMES favor for yet another weekend. atleast stoogies wasnt number one. I still cant believe people are stupid enough to go to that movie. I blame the pg-13 rating for lockout.. I would have gone and seen it if we got to see the R rated version like every other country. plus there could be a sequel... it only cost 20 million to make, and I am betting it makes that from just overseas and canada sales.

Brumbray saw the R rated version, and he liked it. The guys on the Podcast hated it because they said it should have been R and felt chopped up. Thats your opinion on this movie. I'm sure you loved the 3 stooges, a movie that looked and probably was worse than a chopped up lock out

Lockout looked like shit, I am sure an R rating would not have helped make it any better.

Three Stooges = okay great

Saw The Three Stooges this weekend. No where near a perfect film, but at least it was worth the price of admission.

Besides, who wants to see a bunch of people act dumb enough in the cabin movie to survive long enough to sit back and watch the world destroy itself.

I also saw "Bully" and would've expected it to enter the top 10.

JoBlo - please ban this person. We shouldn't have to worry about spoilers in the box-office comments section. Movie Man2 has done this before.

Apparently philalva is an idiot and doesn't understand that people are pissed off for potentially spoiling the end of the movie. Not bad talking him. What a douche. Next time, when commenting on what other people are commenting on, make sure to read everything before acting like a troll.

I debated about seeing Lockout b/c I like Guy Pearce and want to see him in more leading roles, but decided to wait for the eventual r-rated blu-ray/dvd release. Shame that American Reunion isn't doing better, I really enjoyed it for what it was. Best in the series since the first movie.

People aren't as stupid as the movie studios seem to think they are (unless we're talking about the target audience that went to see the Three Stooges). You make a movie and release it as an R rated movie everywhere else, but edit it down to a wimpy PG-13 here, and people are just going to wait for the dvd.

If you saw the redband trailer, you'd see the difference. Again, it's like watching "Goodfellas" on tv.

DIdnt the same thing happen with Taken? (Another Luc Bessan movie)? I dont think the problem is the rating (although, perhaps that played into it, although until reading your post, I had no idea there was an R rated version out there).. the problem is, until last week, I never even heard of this movie and the trailer I saw was not anything different or worth rushing out to see. Whereas Taken had one of the most ingenious trailers ever put out.

Wish The Cabin in the Woods did better

It truly is a fantastic film and a true treat for all horror fans out there. It was funny, smart, surprisingly well acted with likeable characters, and one of the most insane final acts I've ever seen in a movie. I would have no problem seeing it again and again and again and again and again. It's not getting the greatest word of mouth, so I unfortunately don't see it holding up next weekend and that's too bad. An original film finally comes out and people immediately write it off. Shame.

I think the whole ratings issue is being blown totally out of proportion as always, well this will make me feel old but back in the 80s & early 90s the rating was just not an issue, ppl say well a movie like beetlejuice & Big have the F word & they were PG & Big was written by the director of Hunger Games ironically. Now that I am in my 30s its no big deal whether a movie is PG-13 or R, i will still see it if it catches my interest. It's always been about quality not quantity & in this day &

It's always been about quality not quantity & in this day & age of so called PC & oversensitive media, who make mountains out of mole hills. I just do not believe a movie can be better simply because of an R rating with added blood or a few more F bombs.

you would think that, but when King Arthor came out a few years ago with clive owen. the movie sucked... then the unrated verson came out and the movie was a 100 times better. it didnt feel chopped up and even had some scenes that made some sense. dont believe me go find it and watch both versions. granted not every movie diserves a r rating but there are some that would benifit from it.

Cabin in the woods

Cabin was kick butt. Lionsgate said that they were happy with the films performance and they feel that it has been getting a great word of mouth to keep it performing strong as stated in a recent interview.

Cabin in the Woods

I thought this movie was the best horror movie since Evil Dead 2 and will surely have a cult following. I wish it had done better in the opening weekend but i'm sure this movie will have "legs" and rake in a decent amount of money.
