Weekend Box-Office: August 19-21, 2011

Aug. 21, 2011by: JoBlo

We're a movin' on up...

It's extremely rare that a film won't open in 1st place on its initial weekend of release, but then actually move up to #1 after that, but this weekend THE HELP did just that, as it had opened in 2nd place last week behind RISE OF THOSE CRAZY MONKEYS, but finally managed to knock the APES out of the top spot after two straight weekends at #1. THE HELP obviously has been getting a lot of tremendous "word of mouth" and only lost about 20% of its audience from last weekend. Mind you, the APES still fared pretty well in 2nd place with another $16M added to its total, which is now closing in on the $135M mark after only three weeks of release (currently in 13th place for 2011).

Ironically, four new movies were released over the past weekend, yet none of them managed to crack the top 2 spots from the top 10. In fact, it was the 4th installment of the SPY KIDS series that managed the "best" opening of all the releases, with $12M in receipts and a 3rd place finish. That figure was about 1/3 of what the previous SPY KIDS film had opened with back in 2003 ($33M) and that's despite both the 3D and smell-O-vision "add-ons" this time around. Unfortunately for director Robert Rodriguez, this franchise seems played out at this point, despite his low-budget scheme to make them.

The "reboot" of the CONAN THE BARBARIAN franchise also seems to have failed, despite its $10M gate and 4th place opening. Unfortunately for that film, it apparently cost about $90M to make, so unless it makes tremendous dollars overseas, I think it will likely stall at this one movie in the imagined "reboot". FRIGHT NIGHT, despite its overwhelmingly positive reviews, also doesn't seem to have connected with audiences in late August, as it only managed about $8M, which was only a few grand over FINAL DESTINATION 5 right below it in 7th place.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Anne Hathaway-starring romance ONE DAY received the worst critical notices of the weekend, and only managed a 9th place opening. Yipes! With the summer season winding down, the 4 films to get kicked out of the top 10 this weekend included HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 ($366M), COWBOYS & ALIENS ($89M), CAPTAIN AMERICA ($165M) and THE CHANGE-UP ($32M).

With the final weekend of August and first weekend of September generally representing a good time for studios to "dump" films of which they are not very proud, it'll be interesting to see how Luc Besson's COLOMBIANA does next weekend ("from the makers of THE PROFESSIONAL comes...another ripoff of THE PROFESSIONAL!!"), Guillermo del Toro's DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (Note: neither Luc nor Guillermo directed their respective movies), as well as the Paul Rudd-starring OUR IDIOT BROTHER. Since there don't appear to be any groundbreaking films coming out in the next two weeks, I guess we can finally ask you the big question: what was your favorite movie this summer? VOTE HERE!!!

While not trying to take anything away from Fright Night, I'm a bit happy to see a remake fail miserably at the box office. Maybe it'll bring us less "re-imaginings" and more creative and original films. This reminds me of Let Me In, which was a good movie and a worthy remake, but completely unnecessary.

On the flip side, it sucks seeing such a Hard R-rated action movie perform so low at the box office... and from what I heard, Conan was true to it's source material.

the only think LMI had in common with FN is vampires. But there is about 23 years between them. Remaking a little known B-movie after a quarter-century isn't heresy.

Its a shame Fright Night bombed. I know most of you are against remakes just as I am but it was surprisingly very good. It was fun and gory and had a great cast performance. Hope it profits on video

I don't think fright night is really a bomb because it only cost 30 million to make and they will probably make that up with overseas sales

Summer is over :(

The decreasing ticket sales only means summer is officially over. No more blockbusters, no more super heroes... Hopefully next year goes over better.

Sorry for Momoa, because he was about the ONLY good thing in the movie, BUT CONAN deserved to bomb! It's simply a bad movie (story, directing, 3D, some of the SFX...). Worst, the Studios will take it as an excuse to do (even)more PG-13 movies instead of R ones!

I disagree with you, Conan was awesome. The story was solid the directing was good. I am a huge Conan fan and wasn't expecting much. Still the Conan franchise does deserve more because it the world and characters Robert E. Howard created are amazing.

I went into Conan not expecting much and i thought it was pretty kickass. Had a lot of fun watching it and hoped it would do better than it did. Still want to see Fright Night as well.

Surprised Fright Night didn't open up on October, instead of August.

Same thing I wondered when Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes both landed in August instead of October. Duh, fucking release it a week before Halloween..

Looks like the chick flick just gave conan and male vampires the ol twist and pull on the proverbial member. Ouch! I guess hollywood male writers are gonna be smartin that one for a while.

Yep summer movie season is officially over & i'm sorry but Conan looked like absolute garbage from the get go. Maybe it's a sign for Hollywood to cut down on the remakes.

why would you think that? Were you in a cave when the Blindside came out?

and the word is "relegated" not "regulated".

Sucks cause Fright Night was pretty good. Good mix of horror and comedy that is hard to find with horror flicks.

I loved The Help. I thought it looked like a piece of shit, but I've now seen it twice and along with Super 8, X-Men First Class and Bridesmaids, is one of the best films of ths summer. And also, what may be our first Best Picture nominee of the year. To all who haven't seen it, please give it a chance. It looks cheesy and lifetimey, but it really is a great film. I loved Fright Night as well. I hope it ends up doing better than Spy Kids 4: Shoot Myself in the Face 4D. Fuck you Rodriguez.

Looks boring!

Conan was good old popcorn entertainment. I hope for more Conan movies but needs more of the fantasy element like the books and comics. The Help looks like a hallmark movie.

BAD LUCK AT B.O

It's very clear that summer was overcrowded. Also Ryan Reynolds,Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba and Daniel Craig are all box office poison. happy that smaller movies are doing well.

I honestly don't think the fact that Conan or Fright Night doing bad has anything to do with the quality of film. Fright Night looked like a great reimagining and for the most part has beeing getting solid reviews. Conan was very well done and alot of fun to boot. I watched it over the weekend and Jason Momoa FIT THE ROLE PERFECTLY. It was a great start to a franchise that was honestly stupid since Conan the destroyer. I believe that the reason for them not doing so well is as follows... All

I believe that the reason for them not doing so well is as follows... All those who are parents and would go see either movie probably went to see Spy Kids with their own kids as their hadn't been a Kid movie since smurfs and well.... Smurf looked AWFUL... granted so does Spy Kids 4. The Help has done well for itself bringing in money. Being directed towards women, many of whom probably word of mouth have been wanting to watch it over the past 2 weeks and havent. My point in this is as follows. Just because a movie doesn't do well opening weekend does not deem it a 'FAILURE'. Sometimes there are reasons that are not its own to why it did not do well.

Just wen to see The Help and was pleasantly surprised. Especially after the sacharine trailer. Anyway, it was well-made and well-acted, and I was rarely ever bored.

I think at this point people are just getting tired of genre fare.

I'm having a hearty laugh over Momoa and those stories he had for Conan sequels. What an utter piece of shit this movie was. I expected it to be terrible and it still managed to surprise me in how bad it actually ended up being. It viewed like a much too long episode of Xena or Hercules, only with much more blood, but with worse cinematography and acting. Quite the feat for having a budget of 90 mil.

I'm happy for The Help winning the box office. I haven't seen it, but based on word of mouth it seems like a good drama despite the fact that it looks made for TV. I'm sad for Fright Night and Conan, but look at the chart and almost every movie is a sequel or remake. That's a sight to behold.

Looking at the top 10 I see 4 franchise reboots (Apes, Conan, Fright and I'll even grant you Smurfs though I don't think there was ever a movie proper for them), and two sequels in Final Destination and Spy Kids. That's six out of ten, and sounds about right nowadays with Hollywood's output, but it's really not "almost every movie". Just the pablum they dump here in late summer.

To be honest with you, I'm a lot more excited for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Colombiana, than I was for, say, Conan or Fright Night. Thank God summer's over. Time for the good movies to start rolling in.

Glad to see 'Conan' bombing. Movie looked horrible and am glad that it probably won't be getting any sequels. Glad 'The Help' is doing well. Movie looks great.

Excited for 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'. I hope it is as scary as the trailers are making it out to be.
