Weekend Box Office: December 7-9, 2012

Bond is back!

For the last couple of years it's been a new release that comes along to knock a TWILIGHT movie from its place at the top of the chart, but this time our favorite suave yet scrappy superspy James Bond accomplished the task.

Despite being released a week earlier than the finale of the sparkle-vamp saga, this weekend SKYFALL evicted THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN (PART 2) from the #1 spot with $11 million.

007's latest is also the greatest, at least as box office goes: SKYFALL's worldwide total is now $918.2 million, making it the biggest release ever from Sony Pictures (beating out SPIDER-MAN 3's global $890.9M take). And in the UK, it has even surpassed AVATAR as the highest-grossing movie.

Still, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN (PART 2) may have been displaced to third, but it currently has a higher domestic haul than SKYFALL. But that $268.7 million total ranks it fourth in the TWILIGHT franchise, still below BREAKING DAWN (PART 1)'s $281.2 million. BREAKING DAWN (PART 2) does have the biggest worldwide total of the series, however, with $751.1 million.

Coming in behind Daniel Craig at #2 was RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, enjoying its highest placement on the chart since its release on November 21st. It's possible that is due to it being the only holiday-themed movie in wide release at the moment, but its $61.9 million total probably isn't filling Dreamworks/Paramount execs with cheer (although it's at $152.4M worldwide).

Spielberg's LINCOLN is staked out at #4 as it closes in on the $100 million mark, and LIFE OF PI is treading water in fifth place. Director Ang Lee's big-budget book adaptation seems to be more popular overseas, where it's netted an additional $105 million.

PLAYING FOR KEEPS was perhaps hoping for some surprise counterprogramming success after NEW YEAR'S EVE supplanted a TWILIGHT movie last year, but the new romcom thudded in sixth with just $6 million. Between this and the recent CHASING MAVERICKS ($5.8M total), the year hasn't been kind to Gerard Butler, although that could really be said of nearly everything he's been in since his breakthrough 300 opened to $70M in 2007 and went on to $456 million worldwide. Then again, THE UGLY TRUTH made over $200M globally, so maybe he's doing something right after all...

WRECK-IT RALPH, the RED DAWN remake and FLIGHT are still hanging in there, while Brad Pitt's latest KILLING THEM SOFTLY is about to make an exit. The horror sequel THE COLLECTION has already slipped from view, while outside the chart, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK continues strong business ($14M total on 371 screens) and Bill Murray's HYDE PARK ON HUDSON had a $20k per-screen average in limited release.

Everyone wisely chose to avoid competing with next weekend's single new release, filmmaker Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.

How much do you think THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will open with next weekend? VOTE HERE!

Saw Lincoln this week...I gotta say it's one of the most over hyped movies of the year... I found myself laughing a good amount of the time...Between Sally Field's tantrums and Abe Lincoln bitch slapping his son...I couldn't stop laughing...And the guy who gave tommy lee jones the wig should've gotten fired...cause his haircut game looked fucked up

That's the way wigs looked back then and Lincoln's wife was clinically insane; obviously you never paid much attention in history class.

Damn shame Rise of the Guardians isn't doing better. Checked it out this past weekend and absolutely loved it. Great story, characters, animation, and it really brought the kid out in me (teared up a little bit towards the end). It's an instant classic and one I will definitely be buying and enjoying on repeated [link] around the holidays. Still dieing to see Silver Linings Playbook; too bad it's not playing anywhere near me.

I still think Argo is the best film of the year. I saw it twice

I predicted in the comments last week that Skyfall would beat Twilight this weekend and got thumbs down for it. I figured people would be happy to know that Skyfall was going to be back to number 1 and knock out Twilight but I guess I was wrong. I'm assuming there are more Twilight fans on this site than I thought.

Sad to see gems like GUARDIANS and PI bomb, while (if we stay in Family Movies standards) something (fun but) as average as Hotel Transylvania (especially if you compare the final product to the pre-production designs seen during the End Credits) make SOOOO much money !

Too bad for CHASING MAVERICKS as well... One of the very best 'SURF' movie ever made (I consider Point Break an action movie more than a surf movie per say) IMO...

On the other hand, I'm glad for SKYFALL... The first

Hope the best for HOBBIT which I find really good...

And, for something completely different, can't wait to be tomorrow, because I'll see the 9' IMAX preview for STAR TREK (X)II !!!

Mr. Bond, we know you fight for England, but our country owes you a great debt of gratitude, for you managed to finally do what so many of us dreamed of: you killed Bella and Edward. Well done, 007.

go Rise of the Guardians go!

Good to see it at #2! It was a great surprise and featured some of the very best 3D I've ever seen. A shame it wasn't huge, but I hope it'll still be a moderate success... I have my fingers crossed for a sequel, though that's probably unlikely but who knows... this is one animated movie that deserves one, such a cool and diverse world! Totally brought out the kid in me when I took a chance with it the other day

Totally agree with you! I just went to see it cause I had a hangover and needed something mindless to pass some time(I have a cinema year pass, so it doesn;t cost me any extra money) and was very pleasantly surprised how good it turned out to be. Go see this film people it's one of the few cartoons that actually deserves to have a sequel! (as opposed to crap like Shrek or Cars)

I had a feeling that Bond wood take back the #1 spot this weekend, everyone is just waiting for The Hobbit as am I. Sad to see that ROTG didn't do the big business as expected, dreamworks seems to have finally stepped their game up and start delivering good quality films and I believe that was one of their top releases in some time.
