Weekend Box-Office: January 20-22, 2012

01.22.2012

Underworld: Awakening kills the competition!

Kate Beckinsale was back in body-hugging leather this weekend, and she was packing enough ammo to slaughter all comers as UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING opened at the top of the box office. The fourth in the vampires-vs.-werewolves franchise returned Selene to the screen (in 3D) and took in $25.4 million, proving there's still plenty of life in the undead.

As with the bloodsucker battle in the #1 spot, critics also weren't kind to the George Lucas-produced RED TAILS, but the WWII action movie still performed better than expected with a $19.1 million opening. The tale of the Tuskegee Airmen also scored high marks from the paying crowds, so maybe George won't seem quite so bitter in his next interview.

Despite some lousy weather in parts of the country, Mark Wahlberg's busy trigger finger kept audiences coming -- CONTRABAND held in third with another $12.2M (just shy of a 50% drop). More than enough to defeat director Steven Soderbergh's new tough-girl flick HAYWIRE, which finally made its way to theaters but only kicked its way to fifth place with $9M.

Gina Carano's man-mangling debut landed behind the expanding 9/11 drama EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE in fourth with $10.5M. Not a huge figure considering the talent involved, but the impending Oscar nomination announcements should indicate how well the Tom Hanks/Sandra Bullock movie will fare in the next few weeks. Although all that awards buzz didn't do much for the 450 screen expansion of THE ARTIST, which was still way outside the Top 10 with $2.3M, behind Golden Globes winner THE DESCENDANTS with $2.4M on fewer screens.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 3D and JOYFUL NOISE kept going with steady business, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED and WAR HORSE said goodbye, and as they start their slide off the chart, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL nears the $200M mark and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO approaches $100M.

Next weekend brings the Katherine Heigl action-comedy ONE FOR THE MONEY, the Sam Worthington heist thriller MAN ON A LEDGE, and the Liam Neeson survival story THE GREY. What's your favorite Liam Neeson role? VOTE HERE!

I didn't get to see it this weekend. I couldn't find a non 3D showing in my city to watch it. I really wish the studios would finally wake up to the reason why their attendance is dropping so badly so quickly has directly to do with not giving the audience a non 3D option. It's one thing to give people the option to see it in 3D. All well and good but to give people no option but to pay the $5 up charge is just going to cause less and less people to go see their movies.

I wish they would start looking at the numbers. Sure the 3D audience was 59% of the total box office but if you compare that to 80 to 85% of the theaters showing the movie were in 3D that should be a wake up call. It probably would have grossed $30 million with less 3D showings this weekend.

It just really ticks me off that the studios seem so intent on killing their industry off. I have a very small role in that industry which puts my future in jeopardy by their ignorance.

I have to agree with you. I won't pay the upcharge for something that gives me a headache and is synonymous with a crummy story. 3D will die out when the studios and Sony figure out it isn't helping their bottom line. UA may have done well this weekend but will die quickly because the diehards have already seen it. I'll wait until it's on TV to see it despite having seen every previous Underworld film.
I'll even boycott the next Star Trek movie until we can see it in 2D.

The theater I usually go to wasn't offering a 2D option either. Kind of pathetic considering that they have 20 screens. I had to go to a different theater to see it.

This week, there was a massive negative reaction to the announcement of a PG13 Expendables 2. I find it ironic that Stallone was defending a PG13 target to make more money and reach a broader audience, yet this is the 3rd week in a row we've had an R-rated movie atop the box office. With a lot of interest in 'The Grey,' we may get a 4th.

Well its also only January & not summer, I still have a feeling it will be R, remember even the first Expendables was rumored to be PG-13, anything to create hype right?

People need to get out and see The Artist. Because all of those who aren't, are missing one of the best movies of the last few years. A true masterpiece.

Anyone hear the stories about people asking for refunds because they did not know The Artist was a silent film? Nuff said.

Underworld was ok but felt like its only purpose was to set up another sequel. While not a great film, it was certainly better than Haywire. What an awful piece of garbage that was.

What you expect?

Underworld : Awakening was six kinds of awful stuffed into 3 kinds of crap. Plot? what plot? Oh well, these things ARE a guilty pleasure, and they are critic proof, and if they control the costs, they're a good coffer filler in January. I found myself laughing at how over the top the kill scenes were. Kate B deserves an award for keeping a straight face through this thing. About as far from a ' good' movie as you can get, but hey - what ya want on the Third weekend of January when its freezing

I think that boxoffice total must be a disappointment, considering the inflated prices due to 3D. Oh well, See you in 2 years , Kate..

The Grey looks like one crazy good film. Will probably be my first favorite film of 2012.

Looks like hipsters weren't interested in Haywire and The Artist. Hollywood will never be hipster friendly.

Expendables 2 might end up PG-13, but Underworld had no trouble keeping a hard-R as this was the most violent edition in the franchise. Awakening does not come close to Underworld 1 or 2, but it likely bests Rise of the Lycans. Glad to see it finish at the top!

Good for Underworld, I actually like these movies & they are certainly better than anything Twilight & ya can't beat the hotness of Kate Beckinsale. It's genius of the studio behind this franchise to release them in January since they have no real competition.

yeah haywire is a gigantic peice of crap i dont really care or know why there is so many thumbs down for people calling a spade a spade.

and is it just me or is rotten tomatoes getting suspiciously generous...i was looking at the reviews for haywire(82%) because i have no idea how it has that...the end fight with mcgregor and the whole explanation of the entire plot was insultingly bad here are some of the comments that rotten constitutes as positive reviews...

It might not have been perfect, but it had enough style and well choreographed fight scenes to beat out any Underworld movie any day.

Can't be any worse than Colombiana, that movie sucked so hard I stopped watching after 30 mins, which sucks cause I like Zoe Saldana but she just was not believable as some big assassin. Nevermind the fact she played a very similar character in The Losers but at least that movie was fun.

Can we officially kill all the "tough-girl flicks" from here on out that aren't involving Kate Beckinsale in leather??? Please? Glad Haywire bombed.

I guess I'm in the minority (thankfully so) I rather enjoyed Haywire. It was nice to see fight scenes that weren't so bloated with editing and CGI as to enduce an epileptic seizure.
